They were protesting the Vietnam war in particular, not "the system" so this isn't the "gotcha" most people like to believe. It was part of a whole artsy fartsy performance art project where they also mailed acorns to heads of states involved in the war, and did interpretive dance or whatever. If they had Facebook back then, they would have put something platitudinous in their profile picture (they would have had one account, I'm pretty sure of it). They did interviews in bed and held press conferences. Not as brave or involved as the people getting baton'd in the face at actual protest marches, but with a better press coverage because they were celebrities.

Both and more. just read the lyrics to "imagine" & " give peace a chance" to get a glimpse

since he was the John Lennon, and one of the two main songwriters in the biggest band of all time, in '69 which when this started to happen, ofc they gonna get all the attention from the media, journalists, the press and the like doing whatever nonsense they wanted..
that said, he was more of an idealist, just preaching about freedom, equality etc. and maybe some light appearances when things didn't & doesn't get too heated, so you certainly wouldn't find them in protests or rallies getting their hands dirty like the common folk
