There is a handful of Aroma test Cores but they are broken and takes ages to load anything, so until that is addressed best to stick with the Retroarch we have :)
Post automatically merged:

Here's another one :) An updated Ps1 Core and a much improved ScummVM Core!

This updated ScummVM Core also utilizes the new AXPro Diver and has Thread support :) notable changes include:
Alot of SVGA games are now playable compared to before.
MT32 is no longer a problem.

Please test these new Cores out also and share any issues you have :)

Thank again to @vrda for his work :D

Attachment includes a new PS1 Core build, the ScummVM Build and the Diff files for any lurking devs to look through and a Readme.txt explaining what has been done/needs to be done :)

Download

EDIT: forgot to mention in the downloads bin folder there are:
scummvm_master_20240425.rpx
(rename to scummvm_libretro.rpx before placing in the Retroarch/Cores folder) ;)

There are a couple PS1 Cores to choose from, with different levels of optimization:
pcsx_master_20240422_WIIU_AUDIO_OPTIMIZATION_LEVEL_1.rpx
(Level 1 – lite optimization on RA side, allowing for bit more parallel processing, can dynamically change old/new wiiu audio drivers.)
Rename to pcsx_rearmed_unai_libretro.rpx before placing into the Retroarch/Cores folder) ;)

pcsx_master_20240422_WIIU_AUDIO_OPTIMIZATION_LEVEL_3.rpx
(Level 3 - removing RA software resampler with small change in core code, old audio driver will have the wrong pitch, no RA features like rewind, record, audio rate control)
(Rename to pcsx_rearmed_unai_libretro.rpx before placing into the Retroarch/Cores folder) ;)
Hi, I have installed the scummvm core (libretro-v2.9.0.1-432-g55a6bef85f7) to retroarch (Aroma Variant) but i'm having several issues.
1) Load Core ScummVM --> Loads Retroarch but without "assets", everything with "pixel font" and no icons, and no possible to load content (shows "Directory Not Found")
2) Start Core --> Load ScummVM, but Modern Theme not detected (files into core/system and Theme Path correctly assigned)
3) Start Game --> Loads fine
4) Return to ScummVM --> Ok
5) Quit ScummVM --> Black Screen (hard reset to recover :( )

Do you experience those issues?

i have some new findings on my issues with this retroarch build for Aroma.

i did a fresh, 1st time install on a friends wii u. all most current aroma and isfshax. retroarch on aroma works well.

i went back to my personal wii u and found weird issues.

  • loading retroarch - no controls until i power off the gamepad. once powered back on, i can control but choosing anything shuts the wii u off completely.
  • used SAME sd card setup that works fine on the fresh install wii u - same behavior. using this card on the fresh set up works fine

i removed anything related to CBHC and deleted all files relating to aroma and did a fresh install with same results. i even removed the payload loader and booted right into wii u menu from isfshax and then reinstalled payload loader (an autoboot into aroma).

what am i missing that is on my wii u that wasnt on the fresh install??

@vrda

I have problems so far with scummvm core on aroma :

1:Can't see my usb drive with the UI

2:Can't start game from playlist. I added a game with the UI from sd:/roms/Scummvm, autogenerate playlist with backend options, this playlist is pretty the same I used to build with previous version. I have just this game in my playlist (scummvm.lpl)
Code:
{
  "version": "1.5",
  "default_core_path": "",
  "default_core_name": "ScummVM",
  "label_display_mode": 0,
  "right_thumbnail_mode": 2,
  "left_thumbnail_mode": 3,
  "sort_mode": 0,
  "items": [
    {
      "path": "sd:/retroarch/cores/savefiles/scummvm_hooks/sky.scummvm",
      "label": "Beneath a Steel Sky (v0.0368 CD/DOS)",
      "core_path": "fs:/vol/external01/retroarch/cores/scummvm_libretro.rpx",
      "core_name": "ScummVM",
      "crc32": "DETECT",
      "db_name": "ScummVM.lpl"
    }
  ]
}

3. On exit core freeze on black screen either exit from RA UI or game.
4. Can't change theme with the last files on the thread you provided

EDIT : Tried to change path hook and device fs:/vol/external01 for sd:, but I just can get core loaded on RA UI. By the way, If I start the game with scummvm UI, it runs. Which device in playlist do I need fs:/vol/external01 or sd:/ ?

Regenerate playlist with scummvm UI and now look like this, but still don't work from RA UI :
Code:
{
  "version": "1.5",
  "default_core_path": "",
  "default_core_name": "ScummVM",
  "label_display_mode": 0,
  "right_thumbnail_mode": 2,
  "left_thumbnail_mode": 3,
  "sort_mode": 0,
  "items": [
    {
      "path": "sd:/roms/Scummvm/Beneath a Steel Sky (CD VGA)/sky.scummvm",
      "label": "Beneath a Steel Sky (v0.0368 CD/DOS)",
      "core_path": "DETECT",
      "core_name": "DETECT",
      "crc32": "DETECT",
      "db_name": "ScummVM.lpl"
    }
  ]
}
I'm having the same issues (Playlists, Theme, and Freeze o Quit), specially annoying is the BlackScreen after quit ScummVM --> Need to force a Hard Reset.

Ok, here's my build with the corresponding "scummvm.zip" extracted in place. It's master from couple of months ago, using RA Aroma threads (rather than libco) and new audio driver AXPro.
Theme works when the included "theme" and "extra" directories are used with provided .rpx binaries.
Using Quit from ScummVM launcher will quit to Home menu.
Close Content returns to RA menu without core started.
Please select the new audio driver, set the sample rate to 44100 in audio driver options and also in Core options after scummvm core is started. Your MT32 roms should be placed in "extra" directory when needed.
It also includes an experimental build supporting optimized Blade Runner, Grim Fandango and AGS 32 bpp engines. It's in a zip file, needs to be extracted in place in order to be used.
That was the Build for ScummVM that finally works! Even the Playlists! @ploggy could you upload this core in the main thread? the one you have in your post is not working :(

Sorry for the late response.

I have performed the following test where there is one scenario freezing the WiiU.

Games on SD, test with "Day of the tentacle"
Check option "return to launcher" in ScummVM Global options
RA ScummVM Playlist autogenerated with ScummVM "Backend" script.

Test Scenario 1:
- Load Core > Start Core > Game Start (in ScummVM)

Exit Tests in Scenario 1:
1) Press "+" > Return to Launcher --> returns to ScummVM (OK) > Press Quit > returns to WiiU Home Menu (RA closed) (Almost OK)

2) Once in ScummVM > RA Quick Menu > Close Content > Returns to RA (after few seconds black screen) (OK)

3) Press "Home" > Close Content > returns to WiiU Home Menu (RA closed) (Almost OK)

4) Press "+" + "-" > RA Quick Menu> Close Content --> Freeze image and do not respond (Reset only through Console (NOK)

Test Scenario 2:
- ScummVM Playlist > Select "Game" > Run

Exit Tests in Scenario 2 have the same result, so there is no influence with playlist.

So the main issue is with exit variant 4, closing content (RA Quick Menu) directly from the game instead of from the ScummVM launcher.

Thanks for your time sharing. Was the same for me. It losing interest to not launching through playlists.
@vrda do you know of someone work on this ?

I've kinda lost the motivation at the moment. And you know what is worst ? I haven't even played the (scummvm) games that I made work better on WiiU.
If someone is willing to improve scummvm for WiiU I'd be happy to help and share all my findings.

Great to see RetroArch working on Aroma!

Just one issue that I've noticed: thumbnails don't seem to work any more. Is the directory the same as it was in Tiramisu (retroarch/cores/thumbnails/)?

On mine its retroarch\thumbnails but you can probably point it where you want in the directories section of retroarch

(AROMA) SD change to FS via the retroarch.config you can replace all SD with FS via search and Replace , I use Notepad++.

Shaders still run like crap if not crash broken , but I think Overlays are ok if you want to simulate CRT there is some floating about the net or make your own.

Just dropping pointers I know most has been covered in previous posts.

check your Wii U if it is set in direction if not then you can go in setting in path directions for all stuff.

I'm still using CBHC/Haxchi with the overclocked standalone emulators but they're getting pretty long in the tooth and clunky these days. I've been watching this thread off and on, and I'm pretty intrigued by the possibility of an all in one solution. Are we at a point with RA, whether under Tiramisu or Aroma, where core performance is as good or even better than the standalone gx emus?

The performance is better than overclocked standalone emus for sure. The thing is that RA for Wii U is still lacking some cores such as N64, so it's not an all in one solution. But mostly everything that is available is better compared to the vWii side.
