I recently purchased a used Japanese 3ds, and performed the JP to NA region swap along with installing cfw. I now realize that the system is still signed into the japanese NNID of the previous owner, and any attempt to sign them out simply prompts me to send them a password reset email, which obviously wont work. Is my only option to reformat the device? What does reformatting a cfw region swapped device entail?

Thanks for the help.

Stupid question, but when you did the region change, did you delete the 00010017 directory? Or is the NNID stored somewhere else?

I'm not sure you can, but that's where a lot of the user information is stored. When you delete it, it makes you go through the new user stuff when you power on the 3DS.

Sound like you must restore original nand, don't uninstall CFW. You can also try what @lone_wolf323 suggested.

  • You will not be able to uninstall custom firmware without bricking the console! If you intend to uninstall custom firmware in the future, you MUST restore your NAND backup that was created before the region change.

This worked! I was able to get a new NNID. Unfortunately, I still cannot update .CIA files due to my firmware and hardware not region matching. (err. code 005-5958)

You have to manually source the update if the game region and the eshop region doesn't match then the eshop method to update won't work.

The eShop updates don't seem to work regardless after a region change, at least for me. I have a Japanese New 3DS, and it won't update North American or Japanese games. Not a big deal, since it's not hard to find those updates after the fact. It is a weird quirk of region changing, though.

And yes, I followed all the steps in the guide on 3ds.hacks.guide.

Then you didn't do it correctly to have eshop access, you need two 3ds to set up region change eshop update method.

Well, that's a bummer. And I don't see that in the guide. The guide even says that what I was talking about would be an issue.

If I missed something, or there's another guide out there that works with a New 3DS, I'd love to know about it just for personal knowledge.
