I know I already said something like this for FF7, but most JRPGs are extremely overhyped to the point where I don't really wanna play them.
Like, I know the hype is supposed to make me WANT TO, but it does the opposite for some reason.
What's that, Persona is one of the greatest games of all time? Well I think people are too hyped for me to try it out.
Although I'm unsure whether this is an unpopular opinion or just an issue with me.
That kind of reaction won't make you popular, that's for sure.

But quite a few people feel that way about media they feel pressured into liking. They develop a sort of prejudice, almost animosity towards games, movies, TV shows, anything that too many people hype up and recommend.

Well described, that's how I often feel (about games, movies, TV shows...). And a couple of my friends feel the same about overhyped stuff. It is almost animosity, I agree. To be fair, sometimes I do give these games/movies a chance, at some point later.

I mean I didn't think it'd make me popular

But no I understand

Modern online games punish you for having a good stable wired connection and staying in region. It never used to be this way, in times gone people would curse the low ping bastards, but now, with few exceptions (like Rocket League), wifi warrior reigns as king.

At best you are dragged down to make it fair and at worst you just straight up get shafted and come off worse. I assume this change is because more people are just playing on wifi and often just connected to the isp router and hoping for the best.

bragging about listening to underground music does not make you better than people who listen to popular music
I don't even listen to music. I listen to the sounds of cavemen grunting and screaming with bird noises combined with the occasional hunting cries.

Reggaeton made me hate most non-game music
I have no idea what that is and I am going to keep it that way
I know what it is but I don't listen to it. It's probably absolute ass. I mean I do listen to some more underground music but I don't act like that makes me superior.

@Armadillo I'm curious, explain why this is? How does having a good internet connection bog players down?

Because modern lag compensation makes it so. I'm not a netcode engineer so you would have to ask them exactly what has technically changed, but there is a clear difference between old games (like Quake 3, UT99, even the old pc exclusive battlefield games) and modern games. Playing on a bad connection used to be horrible, now it's not and games drag the other player down or favour the bad connection with few exceptions.

I can give you examples.

For Honor. I can't remember the exact details, but iirc it was something like if there is 100ms difference between players attack animations are cut short or something along those lines, I can't remember exactly, it doesn't really matter, point is, if you have 10ms ping, the other player has 10ms ping, everything is good, you can parry, dodge etc, all fine and have a great fight. If you have 10ms, the other player is out of region or is playing on a tin can and string and has 150ms, now the game is janky. It's "fair" in the sense that both players suffer, but you have done everything right and your experiance is still degraded because of someone else on a bad connection.

That's best case, other games just give the advantage to bad connections. Overwatch 2 does that. Post from years ago https://us.forums.blizzard.com/en/o...er-pings-seem-to-have-a-huge-advantage/331971 someone complaining about it and someone saying they ran tournaments and it's true. Game has "shooters advantage" but it's not applied equally. I can give examples of that.

You can easily see the "shooters advantage" with Hanzo because he has a projectile. Example https://imgchest.com/p/m9yx2ojbp7q

You can see the arrow has clearly missed, but because the laggy Hanzo hit me on thier screen & the game has "shooters advantage" the arrow makes a wild correction to make it "hit" on my screen. But of course some will say "that's fair" because you get as well, but no, you don't. Like the guy on Blizzard forum says, it's not applied equally. That's a fairly mild "miss" as well, it can get really wild with arrows literally bending around corners to get you.

22 latency (it's not raw ping on overwatch, it's ping + server processing time). Ashe is hitscan (so no travel time), Ashe has no random spread or deviation when aiming down sights. No packet loss or issues (overwatch has symbols that blink and they are really sensitive to it), yet my hit is completey ignored. Where did my "shooters advantage" go?, this isn't an isolated incident. Whenever this happens it's normally the same player who is a bullet sponge over and over again.

Fall Guys, a lot of stuff on Fall Guys is client side for some reason and high ping/bad connection is an advantage.
Someone asking how to do a specific tech
https://www reddit.com/r/FallGuysGame/comments/1g5obre/anyone_knows_this_technique/ (remove space because reddit links keep breaking) and you can see someone saying it's easier on further region servers (so higher ping).
or how about this

Watch the bean with the yellow hat. Literally flying about on tiles that aren't there anymore, then falling down, then teleporting and flying into me like a ton of bricks. Another clear advantage for the bad connection and punishment for the good connection.

Valorant last year lowered server rewind for 200ms to 140ms (still too high for a competitive game, should be 100ms max), why?, because it was too generous and was fustrating to play against. https://www.vlr.gg/170447/valorant-patch-notes-6-02

"These behaviors already exist in VALORANT, but we are shifting the needle for what we consider “high ping” to be less generous. We hope that this change reduces the frustration players feel when playing against high ping players and continues to minimize the impact of networking conditions on gameplay"

So the netcode was being generous to high ping players at the cost of low ping players.

Despite all this, this is still an unpopular opinion and whenever people bring it up, people will still insist "no advantage" it's skill issue, you missed or similar. Bring the receipts of you being shafted for having a good connection and staying in region and suddenly tumbleweeds.

You can just look at player behaviour as well. Play in Europe and if there is no region lock, EU servers will be full of middle eastern players, if there is a lock, then there will be complaints because they want onto the EU servers. Why? middle east have their own servers on most games, they have the playerbase, but would rather play out of region on high ping, why would you do that if it was a disadvantage?

Also look at Rocket League, a rare exception where it doesn't tolerate bad connections at all, it needs a really stable connection, which normally means a wired connection. A week doesn't go by on the Rocket League subreddit without someone proclaiming "bad servers" and it's not their wifi. And why isn't it their wifi? because it's "fine" on every other game. So their connection is bad, but other games are covering it up.

Something clearly changed in netcode/lag compensation over the years. I assume the devs have seen the numbers once online gaming went mainstream on consoles & saw that most players were on wifi rather than wired, where as when online gaming was the domain of pc only, most people were hardwired.
