In what could possibly be the worst way to start October for emulation enthusiasts, as of just a few minutes ago the Ryujinx repository appears to be down, with the usual "404" message being given when trying to enter any of their related GitHub pages. Not even the main Ryujinx developer account seems to be active.

Currently there hasn't been any official reports as to why this occurred. None of the official social media accounts for the emulator have given any response, nor has any of the developers talked about why the repository is down, but we'll be sure to keep you updated whenever any new developments towards this situation are known.

UPDATE #1: Given the nature of the page being down with a 404 message, it's possible that this could be related to the removal of the Ryujinx account, and not a DMCA. If the repository suffered from a DMCA claim, then the DMCA notice would appear when entering the repository. However, that is not the case, and the DMCA listings from GitHub doesn't have any recent entries for Ryujinx.

UPDATE #2: The Ryujinx Discord server has paused invites for the moment, and additionally, one of the Discord mods posted the following message:
"To clarify, it's not a DMCA, it's not an issue with GitHub. Please wait for further information and refrain from spreading misinfo thanks."

UPDATE #3: According to an official statement on Ryujinx's Discord server, developer gdkchan was contacted by Nintendo and they were offered an agreement to stop working on the emulator project, and while the agreement wasn't confirmed yet, the organization has been entirely removed.

UPDATE #4: According to other devs, the developer was not only contacted, but actually tracked down by Nintendo to his location, and pressured to developer to cease and abandon development altogether for the emulator.

This marks now the 2nd and only main remaining Switch emulator that Nintendo has taken down as of today, and without any proper and clear protection when it comes to emulation and preservation down the road, it's likely that Nintendo will continue on its efforts to bring down emulation as a whole.

Yeah...that became less of a "hydra-like entity" that everyone thought it would become, and more like an ouroboros consisting of multiple serpent heads trying to devour each other tail-first in a desperate bid to become the dominant one, while the body they tore themselves away from slowly decomposes.

Not a particularly dignified ending for an emulator originally made by a dev that got in way over their heads and made some questionable decisions that led to them getting sued.

This actually came back to bite Disney in the ass one time when a school was fined $200 for showing The Lion King at a fundraiser. The backlash was so fierce that not only did they apologize, but the CEO actually donated to their fundraiser!

Unless something changes, Nintendo will be just a "well-known gaming company" in the eyes of most folks.

Yes. Not updating for security patches is like the worst thing you can do. Might as well have a sign on your back that says “hack me”. There’s a reason why there was a push for getting people stop running xp at its EoL because clearly it’s not safe.

At winten eol if you don’t want to update to 11 you are better off just moving to Linux or one of the BSDs (and of course keeping your eyes out for security patches)

Switch 2 can run Switch games, it will be marketed by Nintendo as a device that can run old Switch games with better performance.

Ryujinx can run Switch games at 120fps, this will defeat Switch 2's advantages. Nintendo is removing all these obstacles before launching the new console.

To those of you who are having some sort of existential crisis over this, I'd say things are looking pretty good: emmauss (original dev team member) had forked the repository before it was deleted, and then archived it, and there have been made over 4100 forks of said repository at this point already. Someone will pick up where the original team stopped, maybe even some of the original team members themselves might continue to work on it.

I'm on the extreme end of tech savviness, so I know exactly what I am doing online, and know all the red flags for hacking and scamming. I only use a specific subset of websites, have permanent credit monitoring and protection (by way of keeping my credit score completely zero, in other words, my credit history is routinely wiped; this makes it so that I never need to pay certain taxes and shields me from hackers getting loans in my name, but also prevents me from doing the same, and I cannot do some things that require credit history, such as subscribing to certain services). This service was provided to me because someone helped me manage my money about 7 years ago, and they used that access for fraudulent purposes, so legally I was classified as an 'endangered adult', and was set up with this via Social Security. Anyway, identity theft is extremely unlikely for me, as there is zero benefit for hackers to use my identity (as evidenced by my SSN, 4 previous addresses, and full legal name being public online because of a data breach for the last 6 years, and having had zero issues). Haven't had so much as a virus in 16 years now, either. If a massive hacking backdoor is discovered in Microsoft code, then I will switch to Linux, but until then I will stick with what I have.

That's a misconception. One that people frequently fall into. Sony did attempt to sue for "unfair competition" since Bleem allowed the PS BIOSs to be used on PC, but that got shot down by the judge almost immediately to "protect David from Goliath". The case that Sony had battled Bleem over was Bleem using PS1 images to compare to Bleem emulation - something that the district court ruled in favor of Sony for but which Bleem successfully appealed, since Bleem's use of the screenshots constituted "comparative advertising" and thus fell under fair use.

Without trying to offend you it actually doesn't matter how savvy or "undesirable" you are. Backdoors and exploits are infinite and you are just an IP address. You can be used as an anonymous proxy for a more valuable back. I won't tell you what to do. You are in charge of yourself. but if anyone else is looking at this be warned. There are plenty of silent killers and everyone thinks it cant happen to them until it's too late.
