They may have hoped that, but the campaign going to the FBI shows that they won't get that leverage.

Trump Jr on the other hand literally had a meeting to get their dirt, and didn't tell the FBI. We can see the leverage that Russia had on Trump his entire presidency. Removing sanctions and working towards getting out of NATO.
