In Spanish we have the word «Ponqué» and today is used for too many bakery products, but originally comes from «Pound - Cake» a cake weighting a pound.

This is a Ponqué at my country:

Neat.

In English speaking countries "pound cake" is called that because it contains "a pound" of each ingredient, so technically it's 4 pounds, but basically it's just to say the ingredients are in equal amounts.

Yes the bakeries make «ponqué» using an approximate pound (half kilo) of all ingredients, but the phrase (pound Cake) was translated to «Torta de libra» and people started to ask for «Una Torta de "una" libra» (A Pound of Cake) so the meaning got twisted here :D

So we buy a pound of a pound cake !!!
