PS3 or PS2? Which to buy?

2500 slims can fail too. Had one fail on me.

Depends on the conditions. Even a Jasper 360 can fail. But the failure rate of PS3s is overestimated.

I'd get the PS3 because of the HDMI output, and as others have pointed out, most PS2 games will work, but I think you should check this list first to see if the games you want to play will work: https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/PS2_Classics_Emulator_Compatibility_List

From personal experience, some games will not properly work even if the list says they're fully playable. I tried Gitaroo Man which needs a config file to be able to boot and fix some graphical issues, and while I was able to boot the game, the graphics were still messed up and the console started overheating after a few minutes (maybe it needs new thermal paste, but to this day no other game has caused my console to overheat). Aside from that, anything I throw at it works, so I'd still recommend getting a PS3.

Some PS2s, especially slims, do have hardware failures. For PS3s just get 2500 (and after) PS3s and you're basically set.

HW failures don't mean that they always happen. You could even have a BC compatible PS3 that never had its caps shit themselves.

The cap issue is a busted myth right now. Yes, they do sometimes go bad but it's really not always the issue as thought a few years ago. You might end up trying to fix something that's not broken.

It is now understood that there are numerous reasons for the infamous YLoD, and there's not a single one which dominates above all others. The only way to know what happened to your PS3 is to solder a serial cable to the SYSCON chip and see what error code it spits. It could be the caps, in which case it's worth fixing, especially if it's a BC console, or it could be the RSX, in which case it might not be worth repairing, or it could be a lot of other issues.

Which games do you want to play? The PS3 can play some PS1 and PS2 games, but a lot of them are not compatible. The backwards compatibility with especially PS2 games is only good on the first generation PS3's and those definitely don't last longer then PS2's.

In my opinion PS2's have less problems then PS3's. The only frequent thing that dies in PS2's are the lasers. But there are different other ways to play PS2 games on them and if it's needed, replacing the laser isn't very difficult or expensive.

On my PS3 Slim with CFW at least the PS1 game "Poy Poy 2" doesn't work, it stays at a black screen after inserting and selecting the disc. It's the PAL version.
