Nintendo Switch firmware update 16.0.0 released, Atmosphere update coming soon

saddsad.png

A new update is available! Nintendo has just released a firmware update for the Switch, bringing it to version 16.0.0. The patch notes are pretty sparse, only offering a single specific change, which merely replaces unusable nicknames with "???". There's also some general system stability improvements, which unsurprisingly break support for CFW. SciresM has announced that a compatability update for Atmosphere will be worked on as soon as possible.

Ver. 16.0.0 (Released February 20, 2023)

  • User nicknames that cannot be used will be replaced with “???” which can be updated from the profile settings.
  • General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.

I have to admit that was a wild guess based on NGC referring to DS carts on the 3ds OS.
I was going to say 'hmm, maybe they're bringing DS games over to NSO then?' but then I remembered.

The bottom touch screen.

It would be next to impossible to figure out a good way to get the touch screen to work in docked mode, so I wouldn't be surprised if they just... do DS games in handheld mode only. If they even do it.

It seems that maybe they are preparing OS for new device that is not a Switch. Kernel now supports all sizes of RAM instead of max 8 GB and FS has added in some places flag check, but all Switches return the same one.

  • KSystemControl::Initialize has been restructured (operations reordered), and now calls a helper which sets up the MT, creates system resource limit, etc.
    • This helper also modifies the KAddressSpaceInfo tables, when memory is large (these were previously read-only).
    • In particular, the following modifications are made to the 39-bit address space infos based on the total memory size:
      • size <= 8 GB: No changes (Heap Region = 8 GB, Alias region = 64 GB)
      • 8 GB < size <= 16 GB: Heap Region = size, Alias Region = 8 * size
      • 16 GB < size <= 32 GB: Heap region = size, Alias region = 128 GB
      • 32 GB <= size: Heap region = 32 GB, Alias region = 128 GB

can't wait to see what gimmick they shove into it this time

Asus's latest laptop has eye tracking OLED 3D screen.

I think maybe a new dual screen Switch with 3D OLED? Nintendo can then resell all the 3DS games again - port/remake/remastered, that's what they like to do with their old games.

The 3DS eShop is shutting down next month, so the timing is right.

Why do people whine about themes? It most likely won't happen. If it would, it probably would have happened by now.
Has Nintendo ever addressed why there haven’t been themes? I assumed it was because they considered it a possible entrypoint so they opted to do away with it.

Noo i just painfully updated my switch atmosphere 😭
Updating Atmosphere actually is not that hard once you're already in the CFW. It's just a matter of deleting an old folder and putting in a new one, as well as restoring sigpatches (all of which is just a simple copy-paste method).

Nothing for user. This number represents changes under the hood.

ngc is used in games SDK to provide profanity filter for years. So my guess it's used for word banning.

Actually I don't think they have. All I can guess is they just don't wanna do it because theirs no profit for them. I don't get it... lets say you could sell themes on the Nintendo Coins place (I don't remember the name) or even on the eshop for like a 1$/1€ and you get a little skin of lets say Pikachu.
