Before this whole virus shutdown happened, my boyfriend and I would try to go hiking every weekend. We were driving to a park one such Saturday when we passed by a small sign on the side of the road -- RACCOON LAKE: 5 MILES.
"Racoon lake? I wonder what that is," the bf said.
I checked the map on Google Maps. "Eh. Just looks like a little lake with one road going in and out. It doesn't even look like there's any trails to hike on."
But it was too late. The gears in the brain of the bf had already started to spin.
"But RACCON lake? Why would someone name it raccoon lake," the bf mused, gazing wistfully at the road. I could tell he was already picturing families of raccoons dancing gleefully around the lake, drinking the clear water, tasting the sweet grass, experiencing life's most carefree pleasures, and ready to welcome him into their family with open little raccoon paws.
So long story short -- after some bickering, I finally gave in and we took an unplanned excursion to Raccoon Lake. It actually turned out to be a fun and exciting trip! We did fun and exciting things, like the walk from the parking lot to the edge of the lake, the poking around of the surrounding woods, and also the traverse of the edge of the lake back to the car. No raccoons were spotted, unfortunately.
Anyway, that's how my boyfriend learned that, unlike the ones in video games, real life locations are often much more disappointing than their names suggest.
