The World of F2P

With a new computer comes new responsibilities. Well, mostly just better specs. Nothing super top of the line but I can actually run most things relatively well. So, I figured I'd stock up on F2P MMOs and such and have a run at it.

First off is, of course, TF2. I played it on my old PC but it ran really poorly. Even on lowest settings it would lag and everything. Now I can run it on mid-high settings with no lag, even on non-orange maps. But the game is still as good as ever, there's just even more content. Been playing a bit of Degroot Keep and it's all fun. It's simply the king of F2P games and even FPS games.

Second off was Star Trek Online. I heard pretty average things about the game but was drawn to it because it's still Star Trek and there really hasn't been much in the way of solid Star Trek games. I think the universe here is good, they choose a good time period to set it in (it's after the latest Star Trek movie but in the canon universe, where Romulus and Remus are destroyed by the supernova). Gameplay seemed kinda average though. On-ground combat is basically just a taskbar game but I don't see how it can elaborate much on it. I mean in Star Trek they have like... phaser pistols and phaser rifles. Not much else. I'm sure they'll take some artistic liberties here but most other MMOs usually have tons of different elements, whether it's magic, close quarters combat, tons of weapon types, something I don't see happening here. Ship combat was kinda fun though, not that it was super deep or anything but it did look and feel like I was piloting a Federation Starship. I'll keep playing it for now but if it wasn't for the Star Trek universe I'd have lost interest already.

The last one was Lord of the Rings Online (aka LOTRO), which I heard positive things about. Again, it's a taskbar game, but there seems to be plenty to do. One thing that annoyed me with this game though was moving for combat if you're a melee character. I'm used to playing Guild Wars, where you lock onto an enemy, click a button, and then move in to attack automatically. Now though I have to run up manually and make sure I'm at the correct distance/facing the right direction to just auto attack. I did think there was some good content though, a fair amount of quests to play with plus all these professions and stuff. If I really enjoy it I may consider buying the expansions.

A side note for all these games though (except TF2), I'm still pretty early game so a lot of this is subject to change. This is just very basic first impressions.

Personally I loved Star Trek online for the customisation alone, creating my own alien sure was epic (hybrid of a human with spikes on his back, horns and red bloodshot eyes), the combat was rather tedious tho, but customising your ship, your crew members (putting a female crew with mini skirts and skimpy tops ftw).

Lotro is said to be a very good game, however I never could get into it, for some reason... z.z

If you like W-RPG styled games, you should try out Dungeon & Dragons Online, it's by far the best game online game I've played in terms of dungeons and battles, it can be really hard to master the combat, but you'll spend a lot of time leveling up and trying to do the dungeons in the hardest levels (well, unlike in most MMO's, you level up rather slowly, so you take ages to even leave the first level, kinda like old school RPG's).

Another great game, if you like TPS games, you have All Point Bulletin Reloaded, in terms of character creation, clothes, cars, gearing them up, it has the most customisation you'll find in any MMO atm, it was originally P2P, but became F2P a while back, you can pick out of two sides, the good guys (Enforcers) and the bad guys (Criminals), each have their own quests and clothing available. This game has a somewhat GTA feel since you can grab a car from the street and just use it (criminals steal them whereas enforcers 'borrow' them).

Just start playing Lineage 2. It became F2P recently and received a nice make-over since the last update.

You should give City of Heroes a try, I played that game many years ago, I herd it went F2P a while back.

I got bored of the questing in Lotro, it's too much of "go here, get this, talk to him, come back to me."

That's kinda like every MMO honestly. Most quests involve going to places and either talking to people, gathering items, or fighting shit.

But I've been really hooked on Star Trek Online and I don't know why. Like it's incredibly repetitive, the quests are basically the same except with some things subbed in and out (You bring A to Planet B but then fight spaceships from C and then fight people on the ground from C, only to go back to your ship and fight more guys from C). Maybe it's just the Star Trek stuff but I literally did nothing but play that yesterday.

You should give World of Tanks a try.
I was skeptical at first, but then I realized...you're a fucking tank.
That's god damn awesome.

League of Legends if you are into that type of game and try out DC Universe. It's an alright MMO imo.

My friend fucking loves this game, I think he was in the beta. If I tried it he'd probably go giddy over it.

The issue with MOBAs is that it's hard to finding a jumping off point. Like all my friends play LoL but I have no fucking clue what they're talking about. Don't get me wrong, I can get into incredibly complex games, I've been a Magic player for over 10 years for Christ's sake, but I really don't want to invest that time again into learning a new game.

DC Universe, I was about to install it, then saw "30GB download" and just went "Um, maybe later".
