With a new computer comes new responsibilities. Well, mostly just better specs. Nothing super top of the line but I can actually run most things relatively well. So, I figured I'd stock up on F2P MMOs and such and have a run at it.
First off is, of course, TF2. I played it on my old PC but it ran really poorly. Even on lowest settings it would lag and everything. Now I can run it on mid-high settings with no lag, even on non-orange maps. But the game is still as good as ever, there's just even more content. Been playing a bit of Degroot Keep and it's all fun. It's simply the king of F2P games and even FPS games.
Second off was Star Trek Online. I heard pretty average things about the game but was drawn to it because it's still Star Trek and there really hasn't been much in the way of solid Star Trek games. I think the universe here is good, they choose a good time period to set it in (it's after the latest Star Trek movie but in the canon universe, where Romulus and Remus are destroyed by the supernova). Gameplay seemed kinda average though. On-ground combat is basically just a taskbar game but I don't see how it can elaborate much on it. I mean in Star Trek they have like... phaser pistols and phaser rifles. Not much else. I'm sure they'll take some artistic liberties here but most other MMOs usually have tons of different elements, whether it's magic, close quarters combat, tons of weapon types, something I don't see happening here. Ship combat was kinda fun though, not that it was super deep or anything but it did look and feel like I was piloting a Federation Starship. I'll keep playing it for now but if it wasn't for the Star Trek universe I'd have lost interest already.
The last one was Lord of the Rings Online (aka LOTRO), which I heard positive things about. Again, it's a taskbar game, but there seems to be plenty to do. One thing that annoyed me with this game though was moving for combat if you're a melee character. I'm used to playing Guild Wars, where you lock onto an enemy, click a button, and then move in to attack automatically. Now though I have to run up manually and make sure I'm at the correct distance/facing the right direction to just auto attack. I did think there was some good content though, a fair amount of quests to play with plus all these professions and stuff. If I really enjoy it I may consider buying the expansions.
A side note for all these games though (except TF2), I'm still pretty early game so a lot of this is subject to change. This is just very basic first impressions.
