Some more stuff in my life.

So, my girlfriend's brother is having suicidal thoughts and now she is really sad. I don't know what to do about it. I really can't do anything. I gave her a hug, and I think that helped her. Any ideas about what I can do to help?

The brother should go to a doctor, so he can be referred to a psychologist. Tell her that so she can make him go.
Not going is like having a wound gushing blood and not going to the hospital because you hope it will heal in its own.
I hope it isn't anything serious :-( It probably isn't, it's usually the quiet ones that actually go through with their thoughts. Talking about it is usually a sign that he just wants some extra attention. In any case the psychologist can work out which - if real depression, meds and therapy, if not, just a few sessions of talking.

@Quantumcat He probably not getting attention which is why it manifests in depression. Probably feels like he's not wanted. Talking can help him. Usually people that commit suicide don't talk about their problems, repress their feelings and feel like they are not wanted. When you repress then nothing gets solved. Depression isn't just chemical it can be environmental. And its much more common for boys nowadays to lack purpose in life and commit suicide or shoot up a school.

Psychiatric help is the best he can do, besides changing environment. The problem is people refuse to get help because of how they'll be judged. But try to get them to see one anyway.

Show the brother anything funny. Cheer him up! Give him a REASON to live. Find his interests. If not, cheer your gf with things she enjoys or gets her to take her mind off the situation.

Best of luck, man!

Talk to him and try to be as close of a friend to him as possible. When I was younger and suicidal, it was mostly just because I didn't have friends or anyone to talk to. I also actually had depression, but I mostly wanted a friend. And also, make sure he doesn't accept meds unless he absolutely needs them. I refused medication when I was diagnosed because I've seen how anti-depressants can fuck people up badly. (Ofc if he's under 18, he will have to have parental permission to refuse medication in the US. Idk about other countries.)
