Gamers should root for the Switch not bash it

I've been on the forums lately some of the hate from viral marketers against the Switch are being echoed. Mostly targeted against the Switch's graphics and launch lineup. I'm not saying that we should praise Nintendo suddenly turn fanboy. However, we shouldn't discount what Nintendo is to gaming and what Nintendo is trying to do with the Switch. Just look at the Switch, it's an entirely different proposition from the PS4 and Xbox One. The Switch will not cannibalize the PS4 and Xbox One market. Therefore, it will expand the gaming console market. That should be good news for gamers because that would mean more games will be available to us. Nintendo is also one of the best game designers out there with talent that have been with them for decades. No gamer should wish for Nintendo to go asunder. You may not be a Mario fan or a Zelda fan but Nintendo just sets a bar for gaming that keeps other developers on their toes. You will also notice that Sony is at their best when they are competing against Nintendo. If you remember the arrogance of Sony when they launched the PS3, you would want a Nintendo to keep them humble. Right now, the PS4 has no real competition because the Xbox One is so far behind. If the Switch fails, we are looking at another Sony monopoly.

Hm, first you say gamers should praise Switch and then you say they shouldn't criticise Nintendo/Switch. Make up your mind.

Just look at the Switch, it's an entirely different proposition from the PS4 and Xbox One.
It's a Nintendo Shield against PlayStation and Xbox.

The Switch will not cannibalize the PS4 and Xbox One market.
Nintendo is certainly trying to pump up the Switch to not have another WiiU commercial failure but the terrible launch lineup, overpriced accessories, pay to play online, voice-chat only possible via a smartphone app (looool), the "free" monthly games part of that paid subscription will be nothing more than rentals and so on. There are a lot of valid reasons to criticise the Switch.

Therefore, it will expand the gaming console market.
Like the WiiU, right?

That should be good news for gamers because that would mean more games will be available to us.
The early days of Switch aren't looking that great and with Nintendo's history of the Wii and WiiU it makes people think twice before jumping back to the Nintendo ship. So, no. At least not for now.

Nintendo is also one of the best game designers out there with talent that have been with them for decades.
Agreed. So is Platinum Games.

No gamer should wish for Nintendo to go asunder.
People who wish that are fanboys. Some are tired of Nintendo making shitty consoles, no third party support and then they just can't bother to stick around with a Nintendo system. You know, people grow.

You will also notice that Sony is at their best when they are competing against Nintendo.
After all, the PlayStation was given its birth because Nintendo was stubborn so yeah, it's their competitor obviously. And Microsoft's Xbox too as it's a gaming console (some are buying Xbox One S specifically as a 4K Blu-ray Player something that the PS4 Pro is lacking).

Right now, the PS4 has no real competition because the Xbox One is so far behind.
Are you serious? Think again. Xbox One is a solid rival to PlayStation. What PlayStation has over Xbox are better exclusives, software/hardware sales. Xbox One has the better online subscription free games and backwards compatibility.

Both - PS and Xbox are for gamers regardless of what you think.

If the Switch fails
Then Nintendo needs to wake up and look at what gamers want to play and not what kiddies, casuals/familes might want. Nintendo's main target audience are customers within 18-27 and higher. Not kids. Or casuals.

If Nintendo shoots themselves on the foot it's their fault for thinking they can pull another Wii.

Anyhow, from all this I gathered that you're a fanboy who's pretending to be a neutral gamer.

they won't nintendo are like the samurai committed to their mission till the very end until they die.

No. We should not Support a company which in recent and not so recent times constantly failed to deliver to the core gamer. They deserve all of the negative coverage that they are getting.

"Mostly targeted against the Switch's graphics and launch lineup"
It seems like a valid option for criticism, and not even an unknown one for Nintendo so they should know better.

"we shouldn't discount what Nintendo is to gaming"
Were I to replace Nintendo with Sega in that post would it make as much sense? We seem to have survived the demise of sega well enough.

"Nintendo is also one of the best game designers out there with talent that have been with them for decades. No gamer should wish for Nintendo to go asunder."
Why would them going third party be them going asunder?

From my perspective.
Their consoles don't do anything from a programming/development standpoint to help make any games like they might once have done (the NES hardware genuinely represents a good way to do scrolling games over contemporary PC hardware of the time, and hardware prior to that, the wii u... has nothing really I can not see done just as well with a relatively cheap USB controller). Actually their consoles are usually weaker, which may lead on to the next point, and harder to program for compared to a lot of other stuff for no great gain.
Their consoles don't seem to get the third party games since the SNES or so. That means muggins here has to buy another console and leave it only for certain games* that could happily run on anything. It is not like they are throwaway money either.
Their consoles have awful online play and services with the main redeeming factor being they were free, just like my PC.
Their consoles tend to lack in other functionality that is basically free to add but not there -- software patents and licensing is not nothing but when I look at all the things homebrew adds...

*though in recent times it is perhaps more accurate to say meh I will get one after all is said and done and it is cheap as chips, if at all.

About the only real positive I have is they are usually easier to hack, however that in and of itself is less and less appealing as time goes on and I gain a whole bunch of options to have something cool done via my TV, if I even have a TV at all any more.

Ideally I would like game consoles to go like DVD players, or indeed phones, and leave me to buy whatever one I like from whatever brand I like.

If I would have to choose only one console, it would probably be an XB1 or PS4. Those are my third party machines anyway.
Now, I am not broken, so why would I have just one.
The Switch is what it is, a beautiful machine to play Nintendo games and I hope also weird niche games I love from Japan.
For me it is more of a replacement for both the aging 3DS and also the Wii U, the hybrid part comes great for me, less consoles to have is better.

In short, I couldn't care for it to be suited to be an XB1/PS4 replacement, I am not planning to replace those anyway.
I want it to have all good Nintendo games, and so much support as the 3DS, no more Wii U customer screwing and lack of support.
As for third party, all the third party support it can get is welcomed, but the only third party support I really hope it has is weird niche games from Japan that I am missing right now.

If that is provided, this is a good console for me.

PS: Also you could call it my precious gimmick machine, when I want "gimmicks" I go Nintendo, and I love them. For non-gimmick gameplay I use my other consoles, and I love them also.

PS2: To me gameplay "gimmicks" add up to the experience in interesting ways. To give an example of a classic gimmick from "old" times, I could cite Metal Gear Solid on PS1 suggesting you to change gameport to avoid psychomantis to read your controls/mind. That was a fouth-wall breaking gameplay gimmick, but that was fucking cool as long as I care. I specially like when my gimmicks break the fourth wall in some way, like they did in e.g. Another Code for the Nintendo DS.

So they can make games for powerful hardware without gimmicks.
But remember that the Switch was created when Iwata was still alive. And his goal was to reinvent the ways of gaming.
Maybe the (possibly?) successor of the Switch will have power in mind, now that Kimishima (that's his name right?) is the president of Nintendo (and if I recall correctly, he is more concentrated on the NES, SNES era, when the slogan of ninty was "Now you're playing with power")

What you simply do not understand is that a lot of people are critical towards the Switch and Nintendo's practices because they want Nintendo to succeed. Why would they want a company they supported in the past to make decisions and produce products that they see as being poor or lacking?

Nintendo will never go 3° party on consoles. The industry ATM have 2 options:
-continues increasing graphic and processing power (development budgets bigger and bigger every time), Nintendo gets off the market. They never works on gigantic budget, so no, maybe mobile games, but not PC/console games
-stay on 720p/1080p, using lower budget projects, Microsoft gets off the market and the 3° party developer goes to nintendo and sony consoles (without the useless gimmicks)
