DOS Games, anyone?

Heya, Tempers.
You may notice I don't write here often.
I only go to these forums because there are (sometimes) more people here than the other forums. :P

So I'm here to ask you guys for some help.

I've taken an interest into DOS games.
Sadly, I was born during what I believe is the death of DOS games.
And, Sweden has never been particularly good with videogames (95 USD for a new Wii game.... yuck.)
So! Seeing how many DOS forums that have existed seem a bit... inactive, in my experience, I'm resorting to asking you:
What good DOS games should I get?
And will they work on XP off the bat?
I'll take any suggestion, because I can find a few of them pretty cheap in second hand stores nowadays.
And I'll be extra glad if there's RPG's available.
If it's free or not is not an issue, I'm willing to pay if I can find it.
By free, I mean games that I can download without P2P, like this one, called Ends of the Earth 2
I managed to get SimCity 2000: Special Edition last week, and it's pretty much mint condition.
Quite cheap for only 1.35 USD, I've seen it on EBay for about 40 USD excluding the shipping.
The crystal case is a bit worn, but I have a few replacements available.

Thanks in advance,

Ace Faith

DOS Games, I love them!

In no particular order, at the whim of my head:

The Colonel's Bequest [Adventure]
Ultima 6 [RPG]
Martian Dreams [RPG]
Ultima 7 (+ Expansion) [RPG]
The Lost Cases of Sherlock Holmes: Serrated Scalpel [Adventure]
The Secret of Monkey Island [Adventure]
Theme Hospital [Strategy, Kinda]
Dungeon Keeper [Strategy, Kinda]
Little Big Adventure 2 [Adventure]

Those are some of my most loved DOS Games (for now) :P

As for compatibility, just use DOSBox ;)

You made me think of a DOS game I played years ago!
I can't remember the name, but it was an rpg/adventure game, if you touched water you died, you died with all kinds of decisions XD

Raulpica's right; just use DOSBox, or try ScummVM, it runs all the games which ran on the SCUMM engine (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion), which all of my favourite games do:

The Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: LeChucks Revenge
Day of the Tentacle
Sam & Max: Hit The Road
LOOM

Then there are others, I'm not sure these will run with ScummVM, but they should work on DOSBox, or just XP if you're lucky:

Simon the Sorcerer
Simon the Sorcerer 2: The Lion, the Wizard and the Wardrobe
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Legend of Kyrandia
Discworld
Escape from Delerium

And there are loads more, those are just my favourites, and they're all the point-and-click type adventures :)

XP dropped DOS, what appears to be DOS is just the commandline, and isn't nearly as fast since it only keeps certain parts of DOS around for backwards-compatibility with non-games (since companies using DOS stuff for business aren't running games).

So yeah, DOSBox is your bet.

Off the top of my head, in no particular order... Prehistorik, Titus the Fox, The Incredible Machine, Terranova, Fallout, Warcraft, Dune 2, Beneath a Steel Sky.

Strife
Hexen
Elder Scrolls Arena and Dagger Fall
I believe Sanitarium is a dos game
Warcraft 1 and 2
Doom 1 and 2
Duke Nukem 1-3D
Heretic
Command and Conquer
Dune
Fallout
Postal
And Blood
That's about all the ones I can think of that I still play

Doom 1 and 2
Commander Keen series
Theme Hospital
Jones in the Fast Lane

Those are some of the good games I have played.

Windows, I'm afraid :( But the recommendation stands, it's an awesome game :yay:

And I forgot to mention Normality, Crystal Caves, Aladdin...

Neverhood! Definitely try Neverhood, it's amazing.

EDIT: NetHack, Ancient Domains Of Mystery (ADOM), Ultima.

If you're interested in legally purchasing DOS based games with some semblance of support I would go with gog.com .They've got a pretty good catalog of games but they don't have everything. You can get stuff like Masters of Orion which is great.

Steam has a pretty good collection old school point and click adventure games. Space Quest, King's Quest, Indiana Jones, Loom, are all there. The original Xcom is definitely worth getting as well.

Some other games you can try finding are any of the "Gold Box" TSR RPG games. The original Fallout is worth it as well.

You can try scouring the bargain bins but for the PC side it's harder to find these kinds of things anymore. You might have more luck at garage sales to be honest.

I'll throw in a controversial statement here. While there's a great nostalgia factor with these old games, they can be pretty frustrating as well. I don't think anyone would say that 'pixel hunting', non-contextual cursors in RTS games, 'monster closet' FPS, are somehow better than their modern counterparts (the Doom remake showing that doing so makes for a pretty stupid game in modern times). Games have evolved from their humble roots and gameplay has evolved as well.

Scorched Earth is definitely a good one, but WHY hasn't anyone mentioned the Hugo series of games yet? I grew up on that trilogy! Definitely good if you like adventure games.

If you are playing them on a PC though DOSBox, I highly recommend for decent Adventure gaming, besides most of Sierra and Traditional Lucasarts, Star Trek TNG A Final Unity, Star Trek 25th Anniversary, and Star Trek Judgment Day. Also Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee and Oddworld Abe's Exoddus, I highly recommend for fun Platform and Adventure gaming :).

True, but there is a fun side to pixel hunting because you could hide all sorts of strange things as Easter eggs. Anyways gamers have changed their exceptions of entertainment too. A lot of people want instant gratification these days. Also some of the older Adventure games had the neatest background art that I hardly can tell in new games these days.

I'd recommend Abuse, Flashback and Oddworld : Abe's Exoddus & Oddworld : Abe's Oddysee (last two ones are available @ Steam).
