HELLO CASEMODIFIED DS PHAT!

So my package for the casemod arrived two days ago. One day later, I find that my friends who were going to help me replace the case bailed on me for half a week, so I took matter into my own hands, asking my dad for some assistance in doing this rather complex task.

Of course, being some DealExtreme products, things did not go perfectly well.
For one, the paint was slightly peeled on the hinge, both inside and out. Oh well, not a whole lot we could do there.
For the other, my hinges were on INCREDIBLY FREAKING tight. My father helped get these out, and accidentally tore some skin on his fingers when he slipped a screwdriver.
Lastly, the screws they supplied to us did not coincide at all with the case. We had to mix and match with the original parts and the supplied ones. At one point, when we were hooking up the mobo, none of the screws would fit: either being waaay too tight, or the holes being simply too big for the screws. We solved this in a combination of hollowing out the tight ones with some very small screwdrivers, and made the huge ones smaller by using some plastic foil, and making enough friction to cause it to become more viscious, and allowing us to mold the foil to the screw safely. Highly unorthodox, possibly not even safe, but everything worked out.

A few surprises came with this:

Hearing that the hinges would be degraded, I feared the worst. However, when completed, I found the crankier hinge much more comfortable to hold at angles, due to the sturdiness.

The build quality is surprisingly good, with the exception of the screwholes.

Fearing that I'd lose that feeling that you get from using a DS for a few years, I reused the plastic underneath the buttons. To my surprise, the buttons have never felt more comfortable to use, ever. :wtf: This may be because My original case got bruised up and shook around a lot back in the day.

And I guess that's it. I've been thinking, now that I've changed the case, what's next? This is a question for you, Tempers! I'm willing to give anything a go for a cool, unique NDS :yaynds:

I'm thinking of adding a crest/decal on it, much like this guy did: http://gbatemp.net/t288030-new-hyrule-royal-crest-3ds
Hell, I might just ask this guy to send me one of those crests for some money :D

Cheers,

Ace~

nice job[/quote]

Thank you! It took a few hours, because my dad wanted a proper instructions video in Spanish (Hispanic home does this to me :D ), so it took a while to find that old age one from like 2006. It proved VERY helpful

Offtopic:

I was thinking of using this keychain as a sturdy metal decal, then gluing it on with super glue? http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Twiligh.../dp/B004LEUVY6/

At worst case, I'll use it as a regular keychain, if the back side is not flat.

Thoughts?

i think that keychain would look better than the foil that other guy did

and it looks really cool, you somehow made me jealous of a DS Phat :rofl2:

Lol, I know EXACTLY which video you're talking about. :P

"Desmontar Nintendo DS" or something simple it's called, I think. It's how I learned too.

Congrats, nice job. I made my Phat Golden. :mthr:

Greatness! My allowance should drop in today, so I'll probably order it then. Hell, I'd order it, regardless of how I'd use it

Yeah, that one! From Teknoconsolas.es. It was helpful for us, although we skipped a ton of instructions (like removing the ribbon cables from the screens), because some things just appeared obvious.

I was planning on going gold first. When I consulted my father about it, he made some obvious remarks that question my sexuality (hint: he has nothing against gays, but he would not like his children to be gay). Realizing he was somewhat correct, and due to things like the reviews saying some paint could be missing, I chose black because I can easily repaint the rough edges if needed. To be fair, since the paint job on the hinge is slightly mediocre, I might just try painting over it.

Looks identical to my DSPhat case mod. Matte Black finish. Mine was a better fit though, all original screws etc. worked fine only problem was the hinge which took a bit of filing to get right.

I'd have liked a Gold DSPhat but at the time I was only ordering from UK sites and they had none like that in stock. I also considered White.

To be fair, the creaky hinge works nicer for me, since I like holding my DS at an angle that won't let the top screen stay still.
