1st Person Shooters

Can someone please explain why everyone seems to be obsessed with them, and why the market is saturated with them?

I honestly dont like/enjoy them. Im not good at them and i dont find much fun in super "realistic" games (that being realistic graphics like being in the real world).

Will someone please explain this to me?

Ps im going to try to not get too defensive and im not going to shoot anyone down, so dont come in here and flame me cause that isnt going to get anything done.
I want unbiased and intelligent conversation. Leave your fanboyism out of it.

The casual crowd has mini-game compilations, and the "bro gamers" have first-person shooters.

Mostly a feeling of satisfaction from teenagers who think they accomplish something by being good in a game in which you don't have to use your brain.

My guess is that just a large majority love that genre. I don't see why people love it myself. I've played FPSes, though I have never been obsessed with them. I even gave my Call of Duty Black ops game to game stop for trade in value and bought my self a ps2 with the rest of the money I had.

I mostly like rpg's myself. Maybe that's why the genre doesn't appeal to me. :glare:

The violence in first person shooters appeals to the basic primal instincts of people deep down. We can achieve violence without actually hurting people. It's something that many like and many enjoy. Now that I got that out of the way, a far more.....I dunno, basic point of view.

It is personal taste. It may be the above that draws people, they may just really like the game play style of an FPS. Maybe they really enjoy the story. There are many aspects that appeal to FPS fans that may not appeal to say, RPG fans and vice versa.

As for why so many are released: You're from America judging by that wonderful little flag. FPS games are very popular in the US. They are so popular that many get released so that some developers can try to make a quick buck on a half baked game. CoD is turning into one of those series that sadly, has a very large following, but has begun to lack the great content over the past few years.

Remember, it isn't what you want. It's what sells.

I personally just suck really bad at them.
That said i like 3rd person shooters to a modest amount. I mean Gear of War and Vanquish help my attention for some lengths of time.
Now i like RPGs but i like the childish ones like pokemon, Dragon Quest, and so on. But not like Mass Effect, Fallout, Oblivion... you know.

At Nathan Drake, yeah that sound good.
I just cant stand all my friends being all like OMG CoD IS SO AWESOME and they invite me to play. And it just not fun. I dont even get any enjoyment out of watching.

if this were 15 years ago you'd be saying "whats with all the fighting games?" on your dialup connection.

its the times, they come and go. fps will die out when the next big genre comes out, and what that is i wish i knew...

Well, the whole first person perspective is awesome in itself. If you don't feel like you're part of the game, you must not find video games fun and enjoyable.

And then there's the realism issue. Everyone says "DEVS JUST WORK ON REALISM AND NOT FUN LIEK OMG!"

Here are some points I'd like to bring up:

1) Realism can be fun. I'm sure you played cops and robbers as a kid, or did something where you pretend you were doing something you could never do otherwise, without going to an extreme length to do it. With realistic FPS's, you can do that. I find it fun to go with friends and act out a breaching scene, or get all serious and use military slang while playing an FPS.

2) The argument that FPS's are all repetitive and dull is pretty much bullcrap. Most major FPS series have something that truly defines them. For example Battlefield is focused more on "real time" war, where it's slow-paced and realistic. Call of Duty is very fast paced, and features a lot of customization. Halo has a deep story and tons of features that allow user-made content. The list goes on.

3) Saying "lolcod or FPS's are gay" makes whoever says it seem more stupid than the person that likes whatever is being questioned. If you can't back yourself up with a valid reason that isn't "lol it takes no skill hurr" then don't bother arguing. RPGs don't require a ton of skill, puzzle games don't require a ton of skill, but people still love them. It may not require as much skill as say a fighting game, but it's not a piece of cake either. You'll get a lot of kills, and you'll get a lot of deaths. Either way, it's still fun if you aren't a sore loser.

4) If you genuinely don't like them, that's cool, but to that people that don't like them for no reason/a stupid reason need not argue. I'm sure a majority of people that hate FPS's hate them for the sake of hating them and "fitting in" with the popular online crowd (lolonlinepopularity). It's like 3DS haters. We know you think 3D is a gimmick, so why are you still constantly bringing that up?

tl;dr: Don't hate an FPS unless you have a genuine and not-half-assed reason as to why you do.

Note: This wasn't directed to anyone in specific. Just saying that now.

Obviously, the only logical conclusion.

it's popular because it was casualized.
The casual crowd is huge, just look at WoW. Even the biggest most popular FPS series (do I even have to name it?) is completely geared towards casuals.
There are a lot of FPS released, but the numbers aren't actually all that staggering comparatively. FPS are just the most focused on, and thus seem everywhere.

Hopefully the phase passes soon, but I wouldn't count on it.

Go play Duke 3D nao. Come back and buy Duke Nukem Forever. Duke is the King of FPSes! Mind you I started playing when Duke Nukem looked like a lego man in the original!

Come on man. Seriously?

[quote name='TDWP FTW' post='3433254' date='Feb 1 2011, 11:39 PM']Well, the whole first person perspective is awesome in itself. If you don't feel like you're part of the game, you must not find video games fun and enjoyable.

That is a very narrow minded and flat out stupid thing to say.

And then there's the realism issue. Everyone says "DEVS JUST WORK ON REALISM AND NOT FUN LIEK OMG!"

Ok. Realism is fun to a point but nothing appealing to me about video games about things in the real world. Cod, Battlefield, etc

I can accept this one. Good job.
However. To someone who doesnt really care about FPSs none of those mean anything to me. Especially if i cant get past number 1.
So from a broader perspective, the generalization (that is my own opinion) is exactly that, FPSs are bland and boring.

3) Saying "lolcod or FPS's are gay" makes whoever says it seem more stupid than the person that likes whatever is being questioned. I get no kills and im not a sore loser (some of my friends are lol) but i get no enjoyment out of it. I dont like them cause my friends wont play anything but these games and my contempt for these kinds of games grows.

4) If you genuinely don't like them, that's cool, but to that people that don't like them for no reason/a stupid reason need not argue. Im not going to call out anyone like "hey you like fps's?" "Then youre a fag!" Im just trying to understand why everyone likes them so much. You basically started defending them. I didnt call anyone out here.

well everyone's got their own taste of games right ?

compare it to food , not everyone likes the same food you do , but there is always that one thing that everyone likes whether it be ice cream , or whatever it is . then they develop different flavours to satisfy the taste buds of the people like ice cream .

now coming back to FPS and other genres. consider FPS as ice cream . there are a lot of different types of flavours [franchises of FPS] but not everyone likes them all . then thinking of it in a wider view , there are lots of foods [genres] to choose from . it's all your decision towards what you like and no one forces you to follow the trend . sometimes you'll like it , sometimes you won't .

-

now this is my own opinion , so don't flame or bash me . don't get me wrong, there are a lot of great variety of genres that the gaming industry provides . though however , FPS provides it's own feeling that makes you want to play it . Nathan Drake said it too , it's just that instinct that humans have to want to kill but not hurt . FPS provides that feeling . it's not as if an strategy game with guns ever gave me that feeling , and that's probably why whenever i had the choice between the two , i'd go for FPS to give me that feeling of excitement .

Hmm...I don't know why 1st Person Shooters are so loved. I've never really enjoyed them. I used to think that it was because I haven't spent enough time playing them. That made me buy Halo 3. A year later...my opinion on shooters hasn't changed. They just aren't fun(to me). I'm not particularly bad at them, but I'm not really good at them either(probably due to me not enjoying them in the first place).

Well...there is a FPS I love. Portal.

Oh, I just thought of another one. No One Lives Forever 2. That game was FUN!

Hmm...so why don't I like games like Halo and COD, but like games like Portal and NOLF2? Aren't they all FPSs?

I wouldnt actually call portal an fps. maybe fps+puzzle?
real FPS like COD, BFBC2 are way faster paced

I imagine it's the gameplay and the rush it gives you. More recently I'd say online has been central in the dominace on FPS. I can't say I'm all that much into FPS, or games with a first person perspective. In fact the game I've finished with a FPP have been Portal, Half Life 2 and SMT: Strange Journey.

However I am a fan of Third Person Shooters, because I just find them fun and shooting shit up is just fun. I do like my RPGs but I find I'm getting board with the majority of JRPGs, they're just not fun bar a few exceptions (SMT, Valkryie Chronicles). They're just repetitive and dull.

Another angle that might want to be discussed is wheter you generally prefer Japanese games to Western games?

Well if Metroid Prime is First Person Adventure... I suppose Portal would be First Person Puzzle Shooter? Platformer?
