Cyberbullying

Wow cyberbullying is pretty damn bad... we had a police constable come to school today, take up one precious period of PE just to be lectured about how the internetz is dangerous. 'pparently 1 in 6 children are bullied in some form using electronic devices (in New South Wales I think...). The constable then went onto say about bullying in online games (I believe usually for justified reasons eg. the guy being flamed is a total dickhead or absolute n00b who thinks they're so damn good), Internet crime (hehe warez) and Limewire (who actually uses this?). Then she (the constable) went on to ramble on about spam and not giving out passwords...

The thing that struck me about this lecture was that the powerpoint presentation was sponsored by Microsoft. The whole presentation was laden with advertisements! That was disgusting. One of the points, and I quote, was "Xbox, the only safe way to play games online. People who disrupt games can be reported to Microsoft and dealt with. Private games can also be set up." My ass the Xbox is the ONLY way to stay safe. Ever heard of Hamachi? PS3? Servers with passwords? *Sigh*

The next advertisement I saw was about preventing trouble from the internet. Another point was "You can protect yourself using Windows Vistaâ„¢, Liveâ„¢ One Care and playing games online with the Xbox360."

Wowee, Windows Vista can save you from phishing and spam automatically! I might as well ditch XP 'cos I'll be so unsafe all my passwords will be stolen! And if I wanna stay safe playing an online game, I MUST play using the Xbox360!

Thank you Mr. John Della Bosca (New South Wales' Education Minister) for allowing us to be filled with Micro$oft propaganda and learn about how amazingly stupid many Australian teenagers are!

Ok enough rant :)

Comments

If someone came to our college and forced me to stay for an hour in tutor (where we normally just go, get registered then leave) to tell me about cyberbullying..

I'd be pretty damn annoyed.

Did no one catch the irony that Gman here was (somewhat) cyber-bullied into watching the presentation? You know, technology...cyber. Bullied. Forced.

Give me your lunch money! my paypal details are.... you see how it works? lol

This is unbelievable what a waste of time and money.

Maybe it was microsoft security, not a constable :P

We had a few of these presentations back in highschool, they knew all about our napsterfiles, limewiring, and they really made it clear that we should never give out our virginity online :teach:

Ah. We were playing basketball. Much better :)

But we were told about "the dangers of limewire". OOoooooOOOOHHhhh scaaaary!! Pfft, amongst me and my friends, P2P is a no go.

I hated how we were told over and over and over not to give out our passwords. You would have to be a complete bogan to hand out your password to any random person... but I guess it's the cool thing to do in 21st century Australia.

Basic summary of the lecture:
SPAM, LIMEWIRE, INTERNETZ, PR0N AND FRIENDS ARE BAD! EMAIL BAD! MICRO$OFT FTW! LOLOLOL XBOX360 PWNS N00BZ! VISTA IS TEH WIN! BULLIES WILL BE EATEN BY US!

I was left thinking whether the NSW Government was a joke, or that the internet itself is a joke.

Cyberbulling aye maybe they should do something about normal bullying atleast that can cause physical harm. You should have thrown a monitor or some form of electrical equipment at the person and shouted "Ha you just go cyberbullied."

Imagine the complexity of cyberbullying through Vista, you in Word the paper clip pops up and says "I see you are writing a threatening letter do you need some help?"
Then Vista would ask you about 15 times if you are sure want to send the letter.

P2P isn't evil, some of the stuff on P2P is legal. P2P helps the poor people play what everyone is playing so I say up with P2P domination. :D

Pretty sure most people have heard of this...but I'll post it up anyway.
You know...in america there is a court ruling pending on a teenage girl's mother bullying her daughter's enemy. To death.

This mom literally created an account, posed as a 16 year old boy and started getting friendly with this other girl (her daughters enemy). Made her fall in love with this *fake* internet boy. She was nice for awhile, then I guess she turned psycho on the poor girl and started saying nasty mean things. The girl ended up killing herself over this *fake* boy. They are now pressing charges on the mother...I'll see if I can dig up an article to put truth behind this.

BBC brotha

And that is funny that your police constable littered the talk with microsoft ads. Makes me think of cheesy Public service announcments of the old days which were littered with comercials as well.

Holy shit, now that's fucking parental defense at its most extreme! Yet, I can't help but feel that Mother is awesome

Anyway, my god, that lecture sounded incredibly awful. Times have changed, though. The only time ANY sort of computer stuff was discussed was during our once a week I.T. class (which only lasted an hour), and even then, it was only a primer into Microsoft Office applications. The most we ever covered was basic (well, basic for me now) web programming, but even that was in my final two years at an after school GNVQ class. If they would have taught kids 5 years ago when they had a chance maybe piracy wouldn't be so rampant amongst teens (and in turn, young adults).

I probably would have told her "To Get N or Get Out", and proceded to list the plethora of security advantages NWFC has over XBL :yayds: Hey, NWFC may suck, but the chances of your shit getting hacked, or being bullied, or your kids being groomed, is pretty much 0%.

This is insane. Seriously, when the hell do people kill themselves over bullying?
Sure, extreme cases can cause a person to do extreme things but suicide over an E-bully?
This person didn't even get physically abused or publicly humiliated, yet she chose to end her life.
Its pathetic really.

Besides, E-bullying is different from real bullying seeing as all you have to do is click a few buttons and it "mostly" stops. I say mostly because when the internet hate machine targets you and fills whatever social site you're on with shooped gay pictures of you, its kind of hard to make it go away.
All this chick had to do was block that person the second he turned nasty....

G
Cyberbullying is hilarious...
But since too many idiots truly believe that

THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BUSINESS

they kill themselves.

Yep. I guess that's why every teenager in Sydney must be warned of teh evilz of the INTERNETZ!!!

RAWR

Realistically (for those afraid of the internet), the best solution would be to go out in the outback where there's no coverage for anything, start up a farm and live a happy life.
