Gamesh!t, and EBGames

Any gamer who wishes to get some cash or even something more valuable for his/her old games and game consoles, should not go to Gamestop or EBGames.

These two stores, two that have basically merged together, treat your most cherished games and used consoles like trash. I went through this experience once before, you can literally purchase a brand new Xbox 360 game for $60, and stand right at the counter, and try to trade it back in.

Even though the game hasn’t even been opened, the asshole at the counter will then type into his death seeking computer, and then he will tell you that the game is now worth, $15. So, the entire game value somehow went down by more than half the original price in 5 seconds. So I have come to a conclusion, that these two stores like to get a large unreasonable profit from your used games, and obviously video games from people are worth less than the brand new games. With how lasers are now on next generation optical drives, there is no difference between a disc with minor scratches, and a disc that’s Windex clean.

You can go to EBGames or Gamestop, and trade in 20 PS2 games, and you will get back $90. You can’t even buy 2 next-gen games with $90, you can barely buy a SIXAXIS controller with that amount. So this is a message to all people who want to get rid of their games for cash, use eBay.

+1 for buying but not trading in stuff at GS/EB. The trade-in values on most things are a joke. But you have to realize that for many things they sell used the prices can be a lot lower than those that are new. So you can't blame them for wanting to give you a small amount for something they can only make a bit more off of when they sell it to someone else. On the other hand I have also seen them buying things for cheap and jacking the price up to almost that of the new item. But that's business... Unload stuff on ebay, a pawn shop, CraigsList, or a friend if you don't feel like you're going to get a fair deal from a gamestore. I don't have any disdain for them since I don't feel ripped off by trading things in for cheap to them. ;) I might be partial to them though because I recently found a bunch of PS2 net adapters that I sold for over twice what I bought them for on ebay. :D

I'd generally agree with a lot of what is said in this topic, if the people who work at the EB I frequent weren't such awesome people.

I buy things from them because I like quality service, and also because I get a little bit of special treatment sometimes ^_^ . One example of this is when someone traded in Paper Mario for the N64 and I was in the store at the time, someone else was looking to buy it and had the money to get it then. I asked the manager no less than a minute before if I could have it, and they put it away for 3 days until I managed to get the money to pay for it. I mean, they could have sold it right then and there, but instead, they kept it for me.

Also, I have a list of games I'm looking for, like 2 pages long, and whenever they get any of the games in that are on the list, they put them away for me and give me a call telling me they have them.

the Manager gave me a birthday present 2 days ago too. Zack and Wiki for the Wii.

I actually had quite a nice experience with EB Games recently;

I had three broken DS's one Phat DS that wouldn't turn on, one DS lite fitted with a transparent casing from DX but had a broken touch screen socket from a failed repair attempt and another DS lite the same as the previous except was in a light blue replacement case. Since all three were broken and i didn't supply a charger for any of them i thought i would get little over $100 for all of them.

This was not the case, because one of the DS lites was transparent the clerk flipped out showed all the other clerks and decided because it was so 'unique' he would give me $100 for the each DS lite and $50 for the Phat DS (these are the prices of working DS's with chargers). But, for undisclosed reasons we decided to purchase 3 new DS lites and because of that he helped us out even more by pretending we had one of those 'edge' which increase trade-in value by 10% for both of the DS lites.

In the end instead of getting about $125 i got $270 for three broken DS's that were near un-repairable. Even after saying this EB Games are still a rip off and so are all other electronics in Australia, for example; I recently went into a Big W (similar to kmart, walmart, etc) and a 1gb MSPD was something like $34! Prices compared to N.A. amaze me.

P.S. There are probably a lot of grammatical and spelling mistakes because i've typed this in quite a rush so please excuse me :shy:

Whenever I'm selling stuff on craigslist, ebay, or here, I phone up EBgames to get a quote, then usually add $5 to their price as my listing price.

Usually even after that extra $5 and shipping, the price seems attractive enough; I find a buyer in like a day.

Damn sales tax. Turns 10% off into 2% off.

Oh, man... these places should burn!! HOW DARE THEY TRY TO MAKE MONEY!!! DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL!!!!!!!!!!

/sarcasm

As stated before, they make their money on USED items... When you buy a NEW game, you pay $50. They paid $35-$45 for that same game (in major bulk)...

If you take 2 games to trade in, as long as they are new (no more than 5 months old) you can get a NEW game free. They take those 2 games (which you probably bought there anyway) and sell them for $5-$15 off the new price to keep in business.

If all of a sudden EBGames/GameStop just disappeared, you all would notice, and would cry out "WHY?!?!?"

So, if you don't like the trade in idea, don't do it. Just don't complain when a company tried to make money!

Actually 10% off before tax = 10% + the sales tax on whatever the 10% would have been. ;)

I read a manifesto of sorts by a manager of a GS and he said that they pretty much break even on new games and that many times they will have to take a hit on games because all the copies won't sell and they get stuck with them and are forced to reduce the prices.

Spikey probably knows which one of these scenarios holds more truth.

in france, we still have independants shops, and prices there are honest. the one near me does around 10 euros per game. I tend to keep some games and sell others. I did a lot of this reselling with my ps3.

I bought devil may cry 50 euros. ditched it for dark sector, paid 10. ditched it for army of two, paid 10, and so on, till I got mgs4 for 30 euros (brand new games are 70 f***ing euros in france, we're so rich !)

It's after sales tax. And I've got the receipts to prove that.

Hmmm... Well I've gotten a few things at GS with my Edge card and it always deducts it before it is taxed. Like the PS2 net adapters were supposed to be $14.99 and they rang up as $13.49. And a GC Gameboy Player rang up as $17.99 when it was marked $19.99.

Is it piracy if it was released for free? Not in my opinion, but I also think it's not piracy if buying it isn't owning it, and it's not piracy if you can't buy it from the original creators anymore.

Free release can have loopholes where they still make money through ads
