Well THAT good night's sleep is ruined

It's been many years since I was last awakened by my nightmares.

Two pieces of background before I get into the story:
1: I don't have a dog.
2: I usually like dogs far better than I like people

It begins with me sitting in a slightly furnished bedroom at my friends' house.
(No budrow, not your house)
I'm seemingly housesitting overnight, and in the house with me are three large dogs.
One of these I know belongs to me. The other two belong to my absent friends.
Mine, a gray German Shepherd, is the youngest, and it's been wounded. It's front paws are bandaged.

In the dream I'm nearly asleep when the two other dogs begin fighting with mine.
I sit up and grab a nearby 20 gauge shotgun and flick on the lights.
Now, at this point, the fight disperses, but the three dogs are milling together, mine looking away from me.
I level the shotgun at them, and think for half a moment.
The fight is over, but I'm still angry. I take aim, and fire, purposely shooting my own dog in the back of it's head, decapitating it.
With a huff I sit back down on the bed, flick off the bedside light and begin to return to sleep.

But I'm in my friend's house, not my own.
The dead dog is bleeding out all over their carpet.
So after a couple minutes I sit up again.
I don't bother turning on the light as I lift the body and drop it into a garbage bag.
(I live out in the country, I've done this sort of clean-up a time or three)
I'm leaning down to pick up the severed head when it weakly growls at me,
and I fall back against a wall.
There's just enough light coming through the shaded window for me to see it's baleful glare turn on me,
and it seems that the dismembered skull is slowly turning in it's semi-congealed blood, like a turret, to face me.
I reach over and turn on the overhead light. The bulb blows an instant after I flip the switch,
but I have enough time to see it's tongue lolling limply from it's lips
and a trickle of blood coming from it's nose,
before I'm plunged back into darkness.
A plaintive moan wells up in my throat

I think that moan is the noise that woke me up.

*sigh*

I fucking hate my mind, sometimes.

Perhaps now that I've written it all out, (and the sun is beginning to rise) I'll be able to sleep again.

Sounds like a scene from a horror movie. I'd drink some hot milk and then try to sleep again ^_^

*nodnod* I used to read/write/watch a lot of horror.

Suppose it's my own fault.

But most times when these nightmares pop up from nowhere, there's a reason behind it.
Haven't figured out the reason yet.

I don't know if I'm lucky, strange or just too morbid minded to interpret a dream as a nightmare, but I've NEVER had a nightmare in my life. Seriously. And I've watched what is considered some of the goriest movies ever made. Most of my dreams either make no sense or are cool as hell. Just for the experience, I'd like to have a nightmare at least once.

A nightmare is just something you don't want to experience. Something you just feel and don't want to happen in life. I have had a few nightmares in my life, but most of them were game related. Played a game one night, then while I sleep, I dream that I was part of it. The horrible part is, I am running away, from the scariest thing ever, death. But that was years ago. I still remember one dream when I was about 7 years old when a giant, shiny, metal, ball was gonna roll over me. I start running away, but the ball kept on chasing me. And when you wake up from a nightmare, it leaves you with one piece of something to remember...

That dream about the game, a arrow of fire rreminded me of it. Anything weapon with fire just reminded me of that one dream.

Now, I never get nightmares. Just dreams, weird dreams xD.

And for you Vulpes, pretty freaky TBH. I would die if I saw that... And be freaked for the whole night. Maybe even end up sleeping with my parents.

I don't tend to remember my dreams much, but I can try and help...

if you don't have a dog, "your" dog could represent a part of you, the fact that its paws are bandaged could represent that you feel that it is injured or crippled in some way. the fact that you shoot it probably represents that you in some way want to cut this part of you out. and the fact that it comes back from the dead could in some way represent that you feel that it will never go away or die.
just a thought.

It is generally agreed that dreams are a way of processing thoughts and memories in the previous days, so generally they mean something, its just not very obvious.

UltraMagnus: I wasn't actually expecting such an insightful response.
I hadn't thought of it from that perspective.
Thank You.

Agreed with UltraMagnus, most dreams/nightmares have some reason behind them.

@ Rayder - *Wishes nightmares upon Rayder* :P

@Splych - Lucky.. My nightmares, are generally scary/thought-provoking.

I know one time my health was declining rather fast, and every night for 6 days. I died in my nightmare, each night a different circumstance ie: Drowning, Fire, Heart Attack. ect.

Creeped me out, Never could find a reason as to why I was having those dreams

Happens to me a lot too. I have no clue where my nightmares come from, they just happen.

Be happy you don't have sleep paralysis, I had a bad case of it a couple nights a go. It looked like there was someone right next to my bed leaning over and picking something up off the ground during the episode. I freaked out in my head but couldn't move, I finally got myself out of the episode after a couple minutes and I realized it was a mixture of the glare coming off a poster and a fan that made it look like that.

It freaked the shit out of me, I would much rather have nightmares then sleep paralysis. Its not a fun time. I guess its also considered a disease, considering how many times I experience it a week which is between 5-10 on a normal week, and some times up to 5 times a night...

@Sstew ~ That is pretty scary. But I think drinking warm milk, and praying before bed will actually help you fall asleep ^_^

@ NeSchn ~ That is hard... I would die if I got that. >_<. Now I am getting scared...

I just tend to have nightmares about the people that matter most to me dying, as it's what I seem to fear most. Perhaps it's simply that you care for your dog an awful lot and don't want to see it die?

UltraM., whereas your interpretation is very literary and could make sense, personal circumstances are always to be taken into account when doing dream analysis (as in psychoanalysis, at least). Not all the symbols are the same, and the fact that one possesses something means different things from one person to another.

A way to identify what each item represents in a dream is to try and remember the feeling you get when that thing appears/happens in your dream. Get only the feeling, dismiss the symbol, and you'll probably remember some other experience/thought/whatever that brings you the same feeling IRL. Or it could be just a fear, anything.

Not meaning UltraMagnus is wrong, just that the interpretation is too "tight", based in such little evidence.

That could be early signs of depression and/or anxiety if you have too many of them.

My nightmares always involves murder but I'm never the target however at first it's a stranger that gets killed and it's always a girl that's the actual killer but I always let her free and at the end she kills off someone who I like. All the killings involves intense gore and sometimes cruel torture methods.

NeSchn, I undestand you to the fully extent, I've had this kind of paralysis tons of times but the scariest one probably was the first cause i couldn't move for some minutes but they were like hours and i was hearing an extremelly loud scream in my head screaming again and again... and i couldn't move, I was trying to ask for help, But i couldn't even move a finger neither speak and i was wondering tons of things at that moment, Also i hear random steps near my bed and i was just so scared and when this stopped i just prayed... i was really so much scared... so i can really say, A sleep paralysis is just way scaryest than a nightmare.

Yeah, They fucking suck. When I first got them they used to be like that were I would see and hear different things. Now, however, I have gotten them so much that I can get out of them so easy because I have trained myself to get out of them XD. That one a couple nights ago was the worse one that I've had in a while.

i once dreamed that the door ringed and on a table next to the door there was a movie channel logo that always bothered me when i was younger, then the teachers of kindergarden came inn and my mom was a...*gulp* a vampire and tried to choke me and the teachers didn't give a shit

that dream sucked

then i once dreamed that i was at the back of andross from starfox 64 and there was quicksand, platforms and crap and my brother and uncle always threw me into the quicksand and each time i touched the quicksand i heard a scream

my dreams sucked balls when i was a kid :glare:

Well it sounds more to me like your mind is trying to tell you that it is rather unhappy with the fact you have had to kill something in you to live in peace in your current environment. It apparently is crying out to your intellect, begging of it even that it restore some form of balance without removing the core element that makes you well you. Of coruse I really don't know. I can see how a dream like this would shake you pretty bad. I just really hope it helps. Call me if you need to.
