Am I doing coffee wrong?

I had some important work to do last night, so I drank a cup of coffee [which should’ve had ~500mg of caffeine], but I fell asleep almost immediately afterwards - even though I wasn't feeling sleepy at all before.

I thought coffee was supposed to keep me awake for longer? So why the hell did it make me sleep like a log? It was genuinely the best sleep I've had in years but still.

caffeine can inhibit neurotransmitters, but can also excite others. it is common on neurodivergent people, but i think it can happen in neurotypical people too, specially if you are sleep deprived

Depends on a lot of things. I have a high stress manager job. I drink a lot of coffee, like 10-12 cups a day.
For me it is even my only liquid consumption over the working day. I forget to drink water.
When I get home in the evening, I eat normal. Even can drink right before sleep coffee and have the best sleep.
On the other hand, on some day, when you are really stressed out, hungry or sad etc. this coffee can work total different and in combination you stay awake - in moments when you really don't need it.

So coffee itself is not a wonder weapon, even so energy drinks. Its the combination of your actual situation and health status.

Do you have ADHD or neurodivergent? Coffee can often have the opposite effect on the brain. I always can sleep right after a coffee, makes no difference really I just enjoy it and it’s part of my routine now lol

i have autism and of course it presents different in everyone so worth a look to see if it’s something like that, feel free to shout me if you have any other questions

I don't have a diagnosis so I can’t say for sure. I guess I exhibit some neurodivergence but who doesn’t?

Autism means disabled in some capacity by the different mental make up. Some say it could be just in this society but It defines everything. To say everyone is, undermines those lived experiences.

I can make myself 1000% coffees but I won't eat or drink water, I'll forget most of my things I need to do because I am so focused on something I am interested in. It's not I don't want to I just become absorbed and lose myself. But the same thing I can not be interested in like a week later. Hyper-fixations!

That's what I'd say defines it less as just like something different and more an actual crippling disability. Everyone isn't on a spectrum. It's a spectrum of different abilities like knobs on a oven. You aren't more or less - you are just like a mix. See photo example. Hope that makes sense, I really struggle with putting my thoughts into words. Trying my best these days as I am only understanding it all myself.
