A minor RGB mod on my Nintendo 64 this weekend:

The result is a a more sharp image with much more vibrant colors. The trees look more pixelated because there were pixels you just couldn't see before. Noticeable improvement in the arrows and the bubbles, and I'd say particularly in Bub. Sorry for the 16:9, the TV just defaults to it and I didn't bother to change it to 4:3 on the "before" picture and it's too late now.

Well, yeah, a CRT would smooth the image a bit, both before and after the RGB mod. We wouldn't see it as pixelated. That's why most people into retro gaming love CRTs.

I, in the other hand will take an LCD panel any day, even if it looks more raw. Main reason is that I don't miss the days where if I'd play too much, I'd end up with red, dry and burning eyes - that's a piece of the 90s I have no nostalgia for xD.

Secondly, I have a personal preference over line sharpness and color vividness over smooth edges. It's a tradeoff between CRTs and LED screens.
