Starter battery failure (pictures about 1.5MB)

This Monday I was forced to go to the grocery store. I hate it with passion, but even a LittleSinchen has to eat and since the shops don’t sell a big amount in one shot anymore I’m forced to go more often or visit more shops at the same day.

One of the rare occasions that I use a car. Carrying a bunch of food and water crates without the car is a bit hard. So I sat down at the driver’s seat and turned the key. Preignite and start. The starter motor made a sad and slow: “Murph, murph, murph.” Preignite again… “Murph, murph, murph. Murph. Muuuurph. Mu. And nothing more. I had seen it coming. Despite being fully charged the old "Starting Bull" battery had more and more problems starting the old TDI Diesel engine in cold state during the last few weeks. The once energetic bull has been become an old, weak ox.

Sinchen: “:shit:!! As if shopping for food wasn’t bad enough. Now this.”

I went to the attic and took a spare starter battery as well as the jumper cable from the trunk.

Starter Motor: “MURRRFMURRRFMURRRF!!!”
Engine: “WROOOM! Bang, bang, bang…”

(Those old TDI can sound like throwing a bunch of stones on a big steel sheet on cold start)
So I could do my shopping.

A bit rainy and snowy in the last days – today no rainfall, so I decided to replace the failed thing. I’ve done it before on cars from the 1980s and early 1990s. Takes roughly five minutes to replace a battery. WRONG! Volkswagen, what did you do? What is all that crap? A bracket above the battery? A plastic cover for the head lamps must be removed to get to the large mounting screw a the bottom? Some insulation wrapped around and closed on the weirdest possible location? Wiring harness above the battery?

It took me about 45 minutes to replace a stupid starter battery. I thought a Golf IV from 1999 would not cause any trouble with that. At least the thing is now in and the engine starts again.

Cars are weird. I love my bicycle.

Edit:
Two new pictures – how it should look like.

Starting up a small gasoline engine is significantly easier than a heavy Diesel.

Below freezing the starter needs ridiculous amperage to start up (and capacity to try multiple times). A smaller battery would perform alright at the beginning but fail prematurely. If there was enough room I'd install a 100AH whopper with some more lead plates than the 72AH.

Hopefully I don't have to do it again. The car will die rather sooner than later. But it may be possible that reaching the light bulbs actually requires doing the whole nonsense again. So narrow. Please don't burn through, lightbulbs.

Should have bought an Up-exclamation-mark :D

(and certainly not that model I don't remember where you have to remove the plastic cover under the windshield!)

That branding, "Starting Bull" just makes it look kinda cheapo. Maybe that's why it broke. Winter is pretty rough on batteries though and if the car isn't used for so long that the battery deep discharges, that is something lead acid batteries really don't like, and it can kill them after just one or two deep discharges.

A
the only reason i can think of is extra rain protection, at least for the plastic cover, good to see you still got it done in the end though

Lol, good thing this wasn't a newer VW. Those are a hassle because of the involved reprogramming the settings that are lost when the battery is removed, like the ECU, window regulators (wtf?), car-to-key FOB sync, and alternator. Avoiding that mean taking another battery with jumper cables and connecting those to the terminals while swapping out the dead battery.

When you get the chance, clean the battery terminals and add some dielectric grease. That'll go a long way's keeping the new battery alive.

Was the alternator changed before, how long ago, and how many kilometers? Does Germany has something like our "AutoZone, O' Reilly, Advance Auto" car parts store where they can test your alternator for free? ... If you later suspect a charging issue prematurely killed the bull battery.

For a car that's 21 years old, the engine bay is only lightly dusty. I'm curious as to how often that Golf is driven and whether you're of the few people who details their own cars.

Oh my! I don't have a car but I can see myself just giving up if this happens to me, haha.

@TurdPooCharger
Don't know the history of that car – have it since November 2016
Grease is a good idea… if you are able to tell me where the **** I put it. I just could not find it.

Reprogramming electronics… I don't want a computer on wheels.

I don't drive very often – but it has a lot of kilometers (almost 300000) because the previous owner used it very much.
The Bull battery was pretty old – four years in the Golf and my father had used it before for ? years. It did not die of deep discharge – charged regularly if car not in use.

@defunct32 Give up? I couldn't possibly give up a car because of a bad battery. That's wasteful.

I've added some more pictures (other, older cars).

The Jetta reminds me on my "glorious" Golf Rabbit (BJ.86 with "only" 75 HPs but run like Hell...)Time....

- Throttle stucks on full - could not not turn off the Engine...
- Right Driver Window splintered with a loud bang during Highway Drive with near 190 Km/h (as I said, run like Hell...) because of "Vibrations"...
- Left Front Brake brokes during (slow) driving...the Brake Disc suddenly had come loose..Material "Error"
- Right back Shock Absorber suddenly comes "inside out" during driving (ist ausgefahren innen) - Garage "Error".....
- One Winter,Wippers are frozen to the Windshield - I "accidentially" turned it on....Drivers "Error".:rofl2:
- one Morning I got into my Car,the Right door was very slightly opened...
I was just about to call my Wife that she had not closed the Door yesterday, when I saw the yawning black Hole in the Dashboard ... my Schaaaatz (Preciousssss) a NoName Radio from Forstinger was gone ...
- My First Experience with an Windowfilm (black of course) in 1986 looong before Need for Speed comes up.:D
Reading the Manual ? Who needs a Manual....so it comes, the wonderful, black Windowfilm was sticked on...the Outside.....

...but in the 4 Years, when I had this awesome Car,it was everytime Fun to drive and - reliable.
Never had troubles on Starting (more on turning off as I described before...:rofl2:).
Except these little trivial Matters I have described.:D

Sad End - some drunken Guy banged/crashed into (Car was parked,he demolished the complete Luggage Space,so not economical to repair ..) but luckily he looses his Front License Plate,so,locating him was not that difficult. :D

@KleinesSinchen, wear gloves when removing corrosion with a mini metal wire brush or rolled up piece of sand paper. Clean until the metal surfaces are shiny. Disconnect both terminals when brushing or sanding. For extra safety, mask/duck tape both battery connectors.

Dielectric grease comes in a small tube or in 1 time use package size like condiment sauce. You can also use general purpose lubricant (like the ones for bike chains), penetrating spray oil like WD-40, or silicone/PTFE (teflon) lube. Take a q-tip when coating a thin layer on both cable terminals and battery connectors on all of the metal surfaces. Don't overcoat (No on extra thicc!).

Dirty terminals will lower battery life due to increased electrical resistance.

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Booo.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    it's dumb
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
