Hey, good luck man! I wish I could do the same thing, but in Japan. It's amazing to learn a new language, but I got stuck at Spanish... I have no way of immersing myself in Japanese.

@MicmasH_Wii No matter how hard or immersed you are to Japanese. You'll always be seen as a tourist, you'll always be seen as a low class, les human in their eyes. Tell you you don't belong there. In places like America, And Europe Diversity is common, but in a closed community like Japan it really isn't. The difference for Singapore is the coast is more westernized. It's more accepting of people of different colors. It doesn't mean you wouldn't still deal with those same issues though. The deeper into Singapore the less influence westernization may have on it. Learning Mandarin is just better to know than Japanese. When Half the world is Chinese you become a asset to companies who lack that ability. And it's nice for any employer on a resume, I can't think of many business's that do business with Japan than Sony.

Some facts about Singapore, contrasted with other countries, according to the 2018 World Happiness report:
  • #4 in GDP per capita
  • #2 in healthy life expectancy
  • #1 in low perception of corruption

@RivenMain Yeah, I know the japanese have a totally different culture, and they are pretty standoffish about outsiders, but I don't know about less human.
Towards the Koreans, well yeah they are pretty racist. I wouldn't really know.
My favorite thing is Japanese jazz fusion, that doesn't require any japanese to understand... :)

Here in Texas, Spanish is more important to learn anyways. We have a large hispanic community, so the food is really good and the people are pretty nice :D
The language is essentially English, but it kinda bridges the gap for Italian and French as well. I find myself able to understand the general idea of written French butnot enough to converse in any capacity.

@RivenMain You'll be seen as a foreigner forever because well... that stuff is easy to tell. But you won't be seen as less human for that reason. The Japanese are fairly forgiving towards tourists, but if you intend to live there you should learn the language If you learn the language and learn how all the politeness works over there, you should do just fine. Ask @Minox, he's lived there for a long time.

I can't recommend it. 5 million people squished into an area of a small city. I can perfectly imagine all the smell, traffic, poverty, rubbish around the streets and noise that can be encountered. Looking at this from the other perspective I would love to see the hotel where Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump met two years ago.

Kinda late for that, the post is from last year. I think I know the hotel, if it's the one with the big roof area with a swimming pool. Never been on the inside, only seen it from a distance. They charge you just to see the top. I also heard there were kim and trump lookalikes doing some sort of parade as a joke. I was in Singapore around that time but went home just the week before they were set to have the meeting.

Lot of comments from idiots who have never moved out of their mommy's basement. @gameboy is clearly one. Singapore has a high cost of living, because, yes, it is a RICH country. It is super clean (chewing gum is illegal, even). You'll see *some* walkging while smoking, but that's illegal too. You can get fined for not flushing a public toilet. If your job pays enough, it really is a beautiful place.

Lotta trash-talk about Japan, too. EVERY country has racist people. Japan has the LEAST that I've seen anywhere. In public, most Japanese are the most polite you'll ever meet. Even if they hate you, they generally have a damn good poker face. I've never had an issue. In fact, they usually want to buy me drinks and practice speaking English.

Seems there's no shortage of people who read "china" and their brain flatlines lol
