Bought a PS2

Hi all!

So on a whim, I decide to buy a PS2 Slim. I faintly remember the scene back then, and so I knew that Phat PS2 with an HDD Adapter was the best option to get, but that's not what I ended up going for. I went for the Slim, for two big reasons, this one was chipped and had the IDE mod done to it. SO WITH THAT IN MIND. My mind went wild with a crazy idea. Get an IDE to mSATA adapter, and plug that into the mod, and load my backups through that.

So what chip did it come with? The DSM4 Pro, which uses Toxic OS, now, while the chip works and it does a pretty OK job at everything it was made for at the time, it's not that important to me. It is nice to have this though in my collection now.

What about the IDE-to-mSATA idea? Surprisingly, it worked. IT ACTUALLY WORKED. However, I did have to format it with wLaunchELF's HDDManager, and use hdl_dumb to load games onto it. But once, I figured that out, everything else was pretty straight forward. OPL sees the games and they load fine. It's actually hilarious, seeing an mSATA 1TB connected to a PS2. Here's a screenshot of ToxicOS loading it:

So far, have been enjoying Xenosaga, Dot Hack, and looking forward to playing others great titles from my childhood.

Now, I could have probably ran the games on PCSX2, BUT there's just something about running stuff on real HW that brings me joy and now, I have an excuse to start getting some physical PS2 games back into my collection LOL

Probably going to look at what other old systems I decide to get and mod, but that's a project for another day. :)

Dude, you dodged a fucking bullet by using a Slim PS2 modded. I don't know what my LARP Luck stat was when it came to Slim PS2s, but everyone of the SOBs I got back in the day always came with a DVD drive that, if it worked one night, it somehow found its way into the accursed valley known as the Disc Read Error the next night!

This is part of the reason why, if I was to ever go full on legit with all of my retro stuff, for the game systems with optical drives, I'd just use a goddamn way to load these things that doesn't involve moving parts that are inevitably going to give you the middle finger and fuck up on you! It's part of the reason why I went with a PS3 in 2011 (when I worked an entire Summer weeding a garden an older brother of mine started for $17 an hour. He was really fucking generous, I tell you!) as opposed to the Red Ring of Death 13 known as the Xbox 360 because it just seemed like that was the flu of those consoles until the last model of the thing came out that looked like if they decided to make a 360 console that has the aesthetic of the Xbox One VCR that was going to be sold with DRM before Microsoft finally faced the music! Was the RROD as prominent on those? (Model E if I remember right)

@Chary I didn’t either! But I was praying while working on it! Lol!

@Silent_Gunner I actually knew that I was taking a risk with the DVD drive on the slim. Had I decided on a Phat though (Might still get one lol) - I would still be looking to get an SSD hooked up to it and not use the DVD drive LOL - As for the 360, after Jasper, they were less prone to RROD. So all S and E models shouldn’t really RROD, I had a modded Jasper that I ended up selling away when I was struggling and it never gave me any problems. If it wasn’t for Microsoft’s effort to offer a decent amount of compatibility on 360 games on the Xbox One. I might have considered getting a 360 to play around with. Who knows. Maybe I’ll still end up getting one for nostalgia lol

That's awesome. I've heard of a few HDD mods for slim systems myself and ended up buying a fat PS2 + network adapter + HDD, but I think my HDD was dodgy because FHDB isn't booting up anymore.. will have to investigate that. It's a great investment though and the PS2 has a huge library, so enjoy. :)

Heh, neat. I personally have a CECHA PS3, so I have a different situation for PS2 games, but I love these sorts of weird hacks nobody thinks of. I'm reminded vaguely of the time I rigged a 256GB SD up to my 3DS using a microSD -> SD adapter. Or that weird SCSI to microSD adapter in an ancient Mac that I fixed up.

Speaking of, I should get around to doing a replay of the original .hack quadrilogy...and actually finish Xenosaga because KOS-MOS is badass.

@aos10 Always am! :P Just lurk these days.

@TheMrIron2 Had I not found this Slim, I would have gone that route instead. I used to have one way back when, and it was great.

@chaoskagami OMG, I would love to have CECHA PS3 in my collection. As for the mSD -> SD, sometimes I wish the normal n3DS didn't have the SD Card behind a backplate, I have at times considered getting one of those weird extender cables LOL. I prefer my N2DSXL just a little bit more, since it's so easy to get to the mSD card.

@aos10 - I tried it a long while ago. I just can't get into crossover games.

@Temptress Cerise - Fun story about this PS3 - I got it on woot refurbished for cheap (like, $80) way back before they were bought by amazon in I want to say...2013? Sometime before 14, anyways. It supposedly came with older firmware. It didn't (it was one of the unhackable firmwares), and I wasn't nearly good enough to hardmod it. Got a partial refund from customer support, but it just sort of sat around until PS3xploit came out of nowhere.

And yeah, I get the n3DS thing. That backplate is a pain. The slot is also prone to failure (and I would know, given how many times I had to insert and remove the card and that I had to replace the slot once.) My n3DS has long since failed, though (top display cable went in the hinge) and I'm using a n2DSxl instead now.
