The Concept of Amnesia

I'm going to be in surgery for the first time tomorrow. Doctor says that sedation will put me under and I won't remember anything, which is a weird concept to me.

I imagine, would I still feel pain? Am I still me? What is consciousness without memory? It is like a stream of "me"s being created and destroyed as the seconds go by, but the only one that remains is the one when I wake up.

Am I going to suffer, and then forget it like it never happened? Like thinking of generations before, having toiled and passed, today known only to history.

"What is consciousness without memory?" You aren't conscious, you're asleep.
No, you're not going to suffer. That's kind of the point.

Sedation or general anesthesia? If it is the former, you may experience what is known as twilight sleep. Basically being conscious and perhaps being aware however shouldn't feel pain. If it is the latter, then you should be unconscious, meaning that you should not be aware of the procedure taking place. However anesthesia awareness can happen, and while it could be like twilight sleep, in some cases could feel extreme pain during the surgery, although feeling pain is very extremely rare. If in an event you do wake up during the procedure, you may not even remember it. There have been some cases where people do remember everything due to the amnesic drug failing to work or when the General Anesthesia fails to work completely or a paralyzing agents works and again anesthesia fails to work. There is a small chance that you could suffer and have PTSD, but again that is very rare for it to happen and shouldn't be worried about it. You will not remember going into unconscious state even, and wake up at the recovery room, perhaps wondering how you got there. Dreaming during anesthesia is not like normal sleep dreaming. It is hard to explain, but at best perhaps being a spectator of your own dream and not actually being there in your dream. Not all surgeries requires the use of paralyzing agent and they say that the anesthesia should kick in before the paralyzing agent kicks in and if that doesn't happen then the pain could result from the paralyzing agent itself like body on fire feeling, again should not happen as again very rare. Does your family have a history of anesthesia awareness? If no, then you should not experience it, provided that the provider care teams takes precaution, not letting the machine run out of the anesthesia, etc.
I had a surgery done a month ago myself. It also felt like very little time have passed when in reality lots of time have passed. Like 2 hours feels like 5 to 10 minutes. That last bit is subjective.

I put this off for a while, but I'm about to get them done too and I'm not a fan of going under. Hope the experience goes well for ya. Not sure but you might say silly shit after (or is that only with laughing gas)?

It's similar to sleeping. You also don't remember the movements of your body.
Self-consciousness is probably an illusion which developed for evolutionary reasons as it helps us plan ahead. It's highly energy-consuming but the benefits outweighed the negatives (in terms of reproduction).

Well that was a neat experience. Sorta just felt like I was taking a nice deep nap as a group of people were prodding the inside of my numbed mouth. Remember some blips here and there but not really.

Unfortunately I was pretty cognizant when waking up, I could even walk and have conversations. Did feel a little silly, kinda felt like having a few beers. My mouth is slowly starting to become not-so-numb, but this peanut butter coffee protein shake is delicious after 20 hours of not eating.

Imagine you're talking to the doc *ping*
...
and suddenly you're awake in another room

(Bad thing is the *ping* - feeling warm uahh comes without warning. Couldn't even get the answer to my question..... beh)I

The waking up part wasn't bad for me... but I'd prefer to not have that again.
The thought of lying around unconcious is not very appealing to me...

You have experience twilight sleep. So you had sedation done. Being able to recall situation but still a blur is part of the twilight sleep process.
Glad your surgery went well.
@MythicalData Hopefully yours will go well too. As for coming out of the sedation, that is different from person to person. Some may actually come out of it like they are sober and others may not be "all there", so to speak. May say weird things, and if you do, don't worry too much about it. It can happen.
I had a full general Anesthesia, and surprisingly, I came out of like nothing to it and as soon as I did come out of it, I was asking for food at the hospital. Shocked a lot of nurses that day.
