people at my school got scammed of cfw

so the other day I decided to bring my 3ds to school and it was around lunchtime, so I started playing it and my friend goes "wtf how did you get all this stuff" then I go "yup it's hecked, want me to do it to yours" so when I got home I did the dsiware crud since he was on 11.6 and dhdgdisjdhdgdisjneyeggd you know what happens. So the next day I give my friend his 3ds back, and right when he gets it he starts bragging about in front of everyone. I kinda thought it was a bit annoying but whatever. about a week passes by and since i walk to school, I saw a kid who looked like he was maybe in 3rd or 4th grade and he was on his 3ds and so i peeked over at it and he apparently had freeshop so i replied "oh you have cfw, cool" then he says "yup, dis older boi got it on here 4 meh, he made me pay $40 tho" and I was thinking "wait, shouldn't cfw be free and always free" I was about to tell him he should get his money back but it was too late, so later in the day I tell my friend that a little kid got scammed of cfw and wouldn't you know my friend says "yeah I think I got a little kid cfw yesterday for $40* I was suprised that he probably already knew about plailects guide or just followed a tutorial on youtube. I asked if he did it to any other people and apparently he did and he's made a profit off of about 20 other people.

he hasn't been my friend since

(just in case if you're wondering yes everyone got their money back)

@SG854 but that is reciprocal, you're paying the other person's time with your time, because both of you get something out of it (enjoyment perhaps). Some times there may be a deficit, but ideally those things cancel out. Time is money. That is a real thing. You should value your time as it is the most limited resource.

I don't find the act of providing a service (e.g. installing CFW) for a fee offensive, that is "using my time and knowledge so you can avoid losing your time"... It is the act of installing a CFW what I find fishy, you know, that is somewhat of a gray area if you do it yourself but it starts turning darker and darker if you do it for someone else, specially for money. That said, still, if someone wants you to spend your free time for saving them from spending theirs, you either take their money, or pay for your lost free time yourself and give it to them as a gift.

@sarkwalvein there's nothing wrong really with installing cfw for someone else per se. It's when you actively help them with piracy (setting up freeshop, installing games) that it becomes grey/dark.
At least in my opinion.

@sarkwalvein Charging money for time? I think they are called hookers.

Hmm, wonder if people get pissed off hanging out with others because they see it a waste of time.
"I could be making money but i'm wasting it with Joe Schmo." I think they are called CEO's.

I think the fact that his customer doesn't know that the hacking is free make this look like a scam for me.

@SG854 that is called anyone, what do you think an engineer does? or a programmer? or anybody? They are exchanging time for money.

K
how dare someone charge for their service/knowledge

reminds me of the time I bought land and a bunch of carpenters wanted to help me build a house for money, im no sucker I watched a youtube tutorial and read a guide I can build my own house
(ive never charged or paid someone for CFW but I understand the thought process behind it, only a child (or a commie) would think someone elses service should be free)

@sarkwalvein My range is $20 to $30 for installing CFW.
Funny thing is I never ask. Usually people come to me and offer me money to install for them.
And I take it because why not.

RustInPeace is a true Saint. He does Pokemon service for free. He's like a charity that gives.

@SG854 it's fine if someone wants to do it for free, as long as they don't think of themselves as Mother Teresa and start judging others.

TBH, long ago I helped (as in did it myself) hacking my friends Wiis, until one friend's Wii went semibrick due to a power shortage and I not only had to go to extra lengths to recover it, but also I had to deal with that friend arguing "you bricked my Wii!", "why isn't it working yet?", etc.

Dear "friends", I don't hack your shit anymore neither for money or for free, go read, learn yourself and assume the risks on your own, or go fuck yourselves!

I charge $20 to install CFW and freeShop, usually covers my traveling expenses and buys me coffee. Saved my friends tons of money on 3DS games, so it's win/win.

I personally think if you can help out someone else and really doesnt cost you much time and little effort, why not help out a fellow person? and the likely hood is that being a nice person will pay off down the road, yes there are lots of people that are way to focused on money and making a fast buck, yes time is money, if the person that you helped bought you a coffee, burger, that would be enough in my books, and knowing you helped someone not get ripped off for over paying, just my 2cents

You give an inch, they take a mile. As I said before, I've had bad experiences.
Also you mess up, you have to take full responsibility and replace everything, even if you are doing for free.
It doesn't help you make friends, it helps you make parasites and enemies TBH.
Of course, if you help one friend, that is one thing, if the whole neighborhood starts looking to you for help, that is another.

PS: The best and more responsible thing you could do, is point them to the corresponding guides and give them tips so they make them themselves, assuming responsibility on their own.

TC, imaging how many school mates own 3ds, u won't become a SAINT modding for free, be more creative! it's time to talk about business :teach:

if a friend wanted cfw, i would definitely do it for only the price of the dsiware game. on the other hand, if a stranger walked up to me and asked me to install it, i would charge him more

This reminds me of an incident that happened back in 1999. A friend set me up to download and burn some songs onto cd's for another person (about 5 blank cd's were given to me). And the other person would pay me $. I go to give the burnt cd's to the person who wants them but they don't know about any such agreement for payment. So I just refused to give the cd's back.

This is back in dial up days. It took me weeks to download the music that they wanted. F them. My time is money. Having to slave through shittty seeders on napster and kazam really takes its toll.

This posts sounds like a 12 year old trying to make up bs so that strangers in the internet think he's doing the right thing lmao.

"And yes everyone got their money back" Yeah bullshit, so your ex-friend realised what he did was wrong and just simply gave the money back? Or did you guys take him to court over $20?

Well, if he charged for his time and work, I'd say its fair, maybe not to charge full $40 but its fair anyway.

When we get somthing for free, we don't take care of it as we should, because it didn't cost a thing to us. But when we had to pay for it, the story is different.

I'd say, as long as he doesn't pretend to sell a console "full of games", and charges only for doing the job to temper it, it's fine. Time is money.

what he is paying for is the service. I used to hack wiis and place the games on the drive for a price. Its a service. it would be a scam if he installed nothing and said look its hacked
