Not so Lean cuisine

My mom brought home some dinner from the store, though I guess she got excited with the stuff she found cause she got a lot of it. Some of the stuff I'm not used to eating.

There was some brand of asian foods called Bento Express. She got me a Philadelphia sushi roll dish. It comes with twelve of them and a pack of wasabi sauce. I don't think is all that bad but all the little seeds around the edges I don't really care for, making it crunch a bit. Reminds me of those hamburger buns from the school I attended before. I don't really know what the purpose of the seeds are but it doesn't seem all that much. The stuff however was smoked salmon (steelhead, sockeye, atlantic), cream cheese & dill pickles. Very odd combination of stuff considering is sushi, I expected more... not common american stuff here, but is only further perpetuate the idea is called "Philadelphia Roll"

The other thing she got me was called Shrimp Pad thai. Other than shrimp, I didn't know what i was eating. The label says is rice noodles which I thought was ramen noodles cause it look like some of the other instant ramen noodle dishes we have around here. It says it garnished with egg and green onions. I was kinda disappointed, it seem like square diced boiled egg yolk, wondering where the egg was until I figured it out. I didn't find no egg white, the dish came with a sliced lime that was sour. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the dish was filled with shredded carrots and not enough shrimp. I'm not a fan of carrots but I do eat them, there is other vegetables I enjoy even less like peas and beans but the carrots just didn't help much.

The other thing I tried was some type of Patty shaped potato bread. It looked like those beef patties or some call it empanada but it was filled with potato, obviously I was shocked there was no meat inside. She referred to it as Knish. Not very practical to that, usually stuff wrapped the way I saw it had more ingredients than just potatoes. There isn't much to say bout this, guess It was better saved to be eaten with something else than alone.

So I mean I tried some new stuff today, ever since that new market opened up, there been some stuff in there I never expected. Just wanted to share my thoughts about those things. :)

pad thai is 'pho' pronouned fugh. its the latest white people discovery of food.

sesame seeds are used for a burned nut flavor and texture

Kinda. At least the dough. They're stuffed with potatoes and sometimes onions and cheese too.

That Pad Thai looks surprisingly decent. Looks pretty much like what you'd expect. I'm not a huge fan of Pad Thai, but it's not bad.
The sushi seems a bit odd, but it sounds good, I like all of those ingredients.

Pad Thai is Pad Thai. Pho is Pho. Pad Thai originates from Thailand, is a stir-fried dish, and looks relatively close to the pictured dish. Pho originates from Vietnam, is a soup/broth filled with vermicelli, and is nothing like Pad Thai. At all.

Amusing, Texas has Sushi here called the Houstonian roll...which is normal tuna sushi...but with Jalapenos. Trying new foods is always fun.

You need R E A L pad tai. We have a local restaurant where my family lives and I've been getting and enjoying their amazing pad tai for over a decade.
You need the real stuff.

@Pleng
pad thai and pho use the same noodles, when you buy the package its usually says 'PHO' on it. thats what i meant
rice vermicilli is used for Khao Poon(spicy curry-like noodle) and spring rolls

@gameboy

I don't care what the packages say; Pho and Pad-Thai are totally different dishes cooked with totally different ingredients in completely different styles. They do not use the same noodles; Pad Thai uses either flat or "glass" rice noodles. The rice vermicelli used in Pho is a round-thick noodle with a much more spaghetti like feel to it.

Ken - good score or bad?
  • cearp @ cearp:
/ going to be making use of it any time soon?

Credit scores are weird but -- like you say, if you're not using it -- not using credit -- that's "bad" for your score
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Trying to improve it at 645
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
    Yet equafax is 678
  • cearp @ cearp:
You need to show you can use credit / borrow money and pay it back to get a good score.

Some people think that means paying interest -- that is NOT correct.
For example, some think you need to "carry a balance" on your credit cards, and that if you pay the whole bill at once, that's bad.
Not true at all. If you can, perfectly fine to pay your card statement in full.

If you want your score to go up, don't close any credit cards - keep them all open as closing an account reduces your average age of credit account, which is bad.

Also how the algorithms work, if you have multiple cards, have the final monthly balance reported on them be 0 (as in pay off early so nothing charged to you in your bill) on all but one card. So only let one card have a balance that's reported to the agencies.

And keep your credit utilization below 30% - so if you're allowed to access $10,000 of credit, don't go above $3,000 or that looks bad.

    I've been doing secured loans

645 isn't a bad score but sure can be better. If there are any bad marks on your history, I've seen some people successfully get these removed by asking
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
One friend is like 550 I'm like how lol
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Thing is we get so comfortable living we don't really have anything else we want to buy until something happens to said expensive item and then you gotta take another loan to replace that
  • cearp @ cearp:
I did a secure loan once to build credit - worked well, specifically did a trick where the loan balance was kept at like 3% for 5 years. As having a loan basically paid off is good for your credit score.
So took out the (small) loan, paid 95% off immediately lol, then paid $2 a month for a few years.
Not every bank / credit union let you do that, and even the ones that do might think your behavior is weird lol :D
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Over time secured loans can get you free shit if you're smart about payments the money essentially goes back to you
  • cearp @ cearp:
Paid like $100-150 or so in interest in total over those 5 years in return for a good bump of my credit score, worth it for me.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Say I want a $600 console I can save $100 per month while paying myself back within 6 months
  • cearp @ cearp:
Once your credit score is good enough you'll get approved for "good" credit cards, then get benefits with them :) I don't make the most of my benefits, some people truly min/max the whole thing and get enough points for free flights + hotel etc... Takes time though, I'm not that serious about it.
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
At a business perspective they can max at 20k within a month
  • cearp @ cearp:
Once you get to about 750 you're fine -- I don't believe you get a better rate for car loans / mortgages if you have a score of 820 vs 750.
  • cearp @ cearp:
Oh yeah if you have a business, or even just travel a lot for work, that will get you a ton of points lol
As many companies get you to book your own travel then reimburse you
  • cearp @ cearp:
Anyway - speaking of work, I need to get back to work :D Have a good day Ken + all other users
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
I'd hate to have that much stress
