A serious question about Cuphead..

Why is this game so overrated and loved so much? It literally just came out and it's already such a "big hit" and it's extremely overrated. I just don't understand, what is so great about it? I don't want any non-relevant replies to this, please keep it on this topic, and please only comment with serious replies.

If everyone liked the same things this would be an extremely boring world to live in.

Why is it so loved? The art and music is at a level of care that is rarely seen and can be compared to Nintendo’s quality of games. The game is very accessible even if it constantly punishes you. People like a good challenge.

I just honestly want to know what's so great about Cuphead. It honestly seems like another 2D game, that's all.

For starters, I think the fact that everything is completely hand-drawn is pretty impressive. It emulates the look and feel of old cartoons from the 30s perfectly. On top of that, all of the bosses are creative and each one presents new challenges to the player. It feels great to spend hours fighting a boss over and over and then finally defeating it. And of course, the soundtrack is great as well.

The graphics are hand-maded (?). On the other hand, it has been overrated because of the media and the story of the mortgage of their house.

I'm not really interested on it.

I was hooked on the art alone, as it gave me great nostalgia for some of my childhood shows like Tom n' Jerry, Looney Toons, the old Disney cartoons, Bugs Bunny, etc. The art style is such a faithful recreation of old-time cartoons, even going so far as to use the exact same hand-drawn Technicolor techniques from back in the day. There's no other game that is literally a playable Technicolor cartoon. Therefore to me and other 90s/very early 2000s kids or earlier, it's not "just another 2D game," it's nostalgic as hell. Seriously, have you never watched any of the greats from Disney, Warner Bros., or MGM? It was such a uniquely creative era for cartooning that Cuphead managed to capture so perfectly. That's why it's so loved. Your profile says you're 14, which means you likely grew up without these legendary cartoons so it's understandable why you wouldn't understand the hype.

Feels like Mickey's Wild Adventure for the modern generation, and that's honestly enough to sell me. Gorgeous visuals matched well with a fitting soundtrack and an overall experience practically screaming the passion of the developers. It obviously isn't a game for everybody; no game is. But at least to me, it's easy to see how it took off as it did.

It's not just the graphics that's good, it's the game itself for me. It's very challenging in a good way and getting satisfaction from beating a boss just makes me want to play it more.

to me was all about the art style, the look of the game, and one I wanted to play, experience before it even came out, something so amazing to watch the level of art created for this game, yes after playing it, its damn hard and can punish you, but then again its a challenge and will offer good play value over other games that you can just glide thru, but that art is something so cool :D

I defer with @HaloEliteLegend. I grew up with old cartoons as those you mentioned but at least for me it's not enough to get me super hooked, not even for nostalgia.
I like the gameplay and its music, it's a decent creation compared to most of the content with see nowadays.

However, I think is overhyped. Don't get me wrong, cuphead is not bad it stands for itself but media has done its thing as always.

The three main reasons why people love cuphead so much IMO:
1. Hand drawn artstyle that resembles a 1930s cartoon
2. The music is amazing
3. The game offers a fun yet fair and challenging experience.
If you're not the type that wants to sit there and retry a boss fight 50 times until you finally beat it for the satisfaction, the game is not for you. The game gives me a lot of nostalgia of my childhood, growing up with Tom and Jerry and other great cartoons.

also the gameplay style where you got to retry and beat that boss over and over, and each start throws you back at the start is very arcade feel, will improve you as a player IMO

It's tecnically amazing in every way. It's a gorgeous experience, offers a good challenge (without being unfair) and is a great throwback to the amazing 2D shooters from the past, like Megaman, Contra and Gunstar Heroes.

It's an amazing game that is a pleasure to watch, hear and play.

Just the overall style is appealing to me. I haven't played it, so I won't make anything up about gameplay.. But I'm going to this weekend. Watching live streams and gameplay videos, it's like a nice shmup with an old school style to it.

@HaloEliteLegend Believe it or not, I did grow up with those shows. Tom and Jerry, Looney Toons, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, etc and they all still mean a lot to me today. I simply didn't see what was so big about Cuphead, seeing it everywhere online just got me wondering, that's all.

The art style and attention to detail are phenomenal. I just sit and marvel at all the hand-drawn animation, while getting my ass kicked and dying constantly :D

It gives classic cartoon feeling. Like disney mickey mouse cartoon. So yeah people love that animation. That's why it got famous.

@Yandere-chan Then I s'pose we have different tastes? I think its gameplay is also excellent - it reaches a level of challenge that few games are able to meet: very difficult but in a way that entices you to try again and again until you overcome each stage and boss with your own skill. As far as the media goes, I think it went like this: people came for the art, and stayed for the gameplay. Cuphead's art is so incredibly unique among games that it provides the perfect marketing hook to draw people in (not to mention Microsoft's marketing muscles being involved...). Then it doesn't disappoint on gameplay, providing a challenge that's incredibly engaging. That's a winning formula guaranteed to generate buzz and illicit very high praise. Actually, Cuphead's gameplay could be half as good as it is now and its art style would still carry it 'cross the finish line in terms of sales.

I was pleasantly surprised. Very smooth gameplay, amazing 1930's cartoon art, great soundtrack, challenging difficulty (but not too hard either, just right), and very fun to play!

In fact, the cartoony style fooled me, and took me by surprise. Despite the childish appearance, the game is harder than it looks :D

It's just a boss rush game. I played it [I'm a scumbag so you can already know how i got mine although that shouldn't even interest you] and it's just... the same game under different cover.
As cute and amusing it looks, it's just the old thing reused again. /opinion
