[Update 2] The journey of fixing slow laptop

So like always, my sister give me the most obnoxious stuff to do.
This time: Her friend's laptop.

Dell Inspirion 17r. When I saw Dell, I tried not to get a heart attack. [i3 3th gen, 6GB of RAM]
What she did? Her mother turned off her PC when partition was being formatted

Okay. After buying a new pendrive [and verifying that my old pendrive is dying] and doing some heavy testing, I can already tell that HDD needs to be swapped. [80% of HDD has unfixable bad blocks, 15% works, the rest is just corrupted]
My dad was actually negotiating with me that "I/O" related errors and "Read-only" errors were only due to corrupted partition table and that formatting would fix it but after further inspection [ft. Failed Grub installation] I diagnosed that HDD is done for good.

I contacted my "client" [Oh, how professional] and she's probably willing to shell out for HDD.

To put it simply, user has been abusing formats, repartitioning and probably other stuff which I don't recall.
The HDD is done for good and nothing can save it other than it's own death.

I love how Linux just runs so easily on garbage and Windows is like "Kay... Let us look through our bloat"

I can't since she requested that I install Windows only so I have to go through that.
But I would if i could. ^^

Can always try. I mean she's obviously gonna ask for Windows when she doesn't know the alternative.

Assuming she uses it for studying / work, toss LibreOffice on there and it's good to go.

Does the thing have msata? If it does maybe there is a chance you can install 16Gb ssd and put OS in it it will drastically increase performance, also if possible install a new hard drive because I think something might've been broken in it.

I would first try a full HDD scan and repair if I were you. You can start with a chkdsk /f /r via Windows. And a virus/malware scan

Nope, not aware of it. Also not going to install any HDD/SSD on it unless she requests me and will refund me for my cost.

I can't boot into Windows since C:// partition is nonexistent

Ok so if you can boot on some USB with Linux, try to check if the partition table is not broken. Because it happened to me once, all the data was here, but somehow I managed to corrupt the partition table, and to fix it I used Partition Manager (or something like that) which had an option to check and try to repair the partition table. Otherwise, you can run the check via any bootable USB of Linux or find some bootable system check program.

But yeah, you definitely need to scan that HDD

unbuntu variations included Xubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuintu, and any desktop environment I could find, even tried Mint.

She definitely is a windows user and unless it is a mac she would probably reluctant to switch.
You should discuss with her the situation and tell it might cost to repair.

Check elementary Os btw it is paid but you can pirate it, it is like a universal Mac OS.
