Is Nintendo a "withdrawn" company?

Recently, on some Korean sites I came across some posts on Nintendo's recent hardships in the gaming department, but surprisingly most articles were written in comparison with Apple (not enough emphasis on Sony and M$ but they seem to compare Apple's recent boom on game apps than actual game competition), because Apple went for do-it-all peripherals like iPhone and iPad, compared to Nintendo which only emphasizes on pure gaming consoles (Internet browsers are one thing but compared to Apple, Nintendo handhelds are severely limited - and even in comparison with Vita, too) and some were saying that they were too proud in their games like Mario, that they just disregarded the 3rd party game makers, and ultimately on the majority of gamers. personally I thought it was not reading the general public correctly and the big N just tried to force new gimmicks onto gamers which they thought was "innovative" but ultimately didn't sell enough to take the top, though you do see their innovations eventually get copied (Wii remotes -> PS3 Move and M$ Kinect, DS Portable touchscreen -> Ipod touch/Ipad, possibly some more).

Since Apple is a computer-first company compared to Nintendo which started out as a Hanafuda card maker, is it unfair that they're being compared? Is Nintendo that withdrawn not to listen to what public wants (the CoD playing type, the graphics whores who are the ones that bring in the most money) and continue to pump out these hit-or-miss "innovative" gimmicks that'll hurt Nintendo in the end?

To be honest, I find that Apple and other mobiles to be a huge competitor to the handheld society. People just buy a supposed smartphone and play games like Angry Birds and say: hey it's good enough, who needs the Vita? Who needs the 3DS? I can even call on this!

That's why I think they are comparing it to Apple.

i think Nintendo did listen to the public with the Gamecube, put more adult titles on it compared to the N64, used optical discs instead of cartridges, had support for online yet everyone flocked to get a ps2. Nintendo then try a new avenue of trying something new instead of going down the powerhouse avenue Sony and Microsoft went and suddenly Nintendo become villians? As long as nintendo can do there own thing im happy enough, the lines between microsoft and sony tend to blur more into one everyday

Nintendo did try for handhelds as well. Nintendo claims that the DS has too little third party support and relied too much on the Malleos. They tried to improve it with the 3DS. Although 3DS games are lacking now, I would say that they succeeded as it did attract significantly more third party developers.

Yeah I know but he started to talk about PS2, Gamecube then even threw Microsoft into the equation.

sorry if i veered off the side there with the last post but the point i was trying to get across is that everybody seems to have wanted the 3ds to either be an iphone or the psvita. Trouble is if Nintendo did go down that route everyone would still pick faults with it because it is Nintendo. It is still early days with the 3ds and i think in due time we will see some great games come out of it when developers can come up with original ideas intead of lets take one of our old games and give it a 3d update.

One thing that would be good for Nintendo, would be some sort of legit homebrew capability. That is why the 'smart' devices are taking a greater slice of the action, it's because anyone with the correct software (and hardware in one case) can create a game or application and give/sell it. People are turning to these devices because, just like in the 1970's and 1980's, they want to play a creative part in the gaming culture. There are plenty of 30-50 year olds who are reasonable programmers, not through formal education, but because they owned an 8-bit computer when they were young, they flicked through the user manual and learned how to ode simple games. For a young person, being able to load up a game you have created yourself on a popular system and be able to let other people play your games, gives a massive sense of accomplishment.
Nintendo however, would rather you buy their over priced games than great your own. I can see their point, but if they released a homebrew dev kit, perhaps with limited capabilities (so that the commercial devs could still make far better games), take a slice of the sales revenue for putting them on the eShop (in a special, well labelled section), they would make an absolute killing, just like Apple are doing.
It has nothing to do with iDevices or Android phones/tablets being better gaming devices because they aren't. It has everything to do with young people wanting to make their own games. Even Sony are apparently releasing an SDK for their devices so that people can code for their fav games machine, a very, very wise move on their part.

This is just a matter of trend. Apple has great marketing department which makes Apple popular using any available resources and as far as everyone is constantly talking about Apple lots of companies (even quite small ones) are compared to this one. Plus placing Nintendo in one article with Apple isn't that bad actually for Nintendo itself.
