A few things I like better about MT-Card

I am not looking to start a flame war as I have both Gateway (purchased at launch) and an MT-Card. No denying the Gateway multi-rom interface is awesome and the exFat support is nice as well.

Still I have been using the MT-Card more recently and the main reason is I prefer the game saving method. I have two 4.5 3DS (one regular/one XL) and I like to be able to move my cart between units (I carry the regular on the road and the XL more at home/office). Saving the .sav file to the microSD just makes more sense to me and makes the MT-cart more transportable.

Also I started playing Fire Emblem (I know really late to the game but just was too busy last year to play it). With the permadeath on hard/lunatic modes that game is really unforgiving. Again I like the MT save method because it is much quicker to backup/restore your save. With Gateway you have to do a full power down and pop SD card to backup saves, then you are dealing with cart ID.sav which is a pain. With MT you can exit the game, pop MT, backup the .sav file by name and pop cart back in and launch game, and not have to mess with the 3DS SD and reloading launcher/emunand.

Storing on the microSD and using rom_name.sav is much easier to me. BTW I have had no problem moving saves between Gateway and MT (as long as you are using the same rom dump). Also one trick I use with Gateway to help deal with the stupid .sav naming convention is to create a .txt file with the rom_id_rom name.txt. That way I can easily grab the proper game save and not have to lookup the rom_id.

All in all they are both great solutions but if you have two or more exploited units then the MT card may be a better choice for you because of the game saves following the flash cart.

To each their own....
Although I find MT's saving method to be better as well. Funny that Gateway can't just implement it with an update or something.

Or just covert all your games to NAND saving format. You'll lose any trimming ability though.
How would that help? Instead of backing up a 512kb save or however large 3DS saves are you'd need to backup the entire ROM each time.

Emulators and flash carts have been using filename.rom and a matching filename.sav since forever, so why did gateway do it the stupid way..?

One of the crappiest OPs I've ever read.
Those reasons are literally pathetic and count for nothing for virtually every person - EVER.
Oh dear, some else prefers other features. The op does say "things I like better".

Trust me if you are playing a game like fire emblem or even Etrian then having the ability to easily backup and restore game saves is a bit of a nice thing to have. I like grinding, but sometimes it is so frustrating to put in several hours grinding and then lose a character or all your progress.

It is just an opinion and like I said I own both Gateway and MT and can find things to like about both. Certainly if I could own only one I would go Gateway as they are boss.

Blah. 3 of my NSO + Expansion Pass family group members are leaving. Found one replacement so far but still need to fill two empty slots. I have 9 days or i eat the extra cost myself. But with a full group $11 for a year is a good deal. imo
