I have a level 8 right now, butt... the military college requires a 9.5 JUST to pass... :(
Anyone have any advice to increase my level?

We don't have that kind of levels here. It's either a full level or a half. Is it the 20 meter shuttle run you are talking about?

I usually made 10-11.

I think the key is to familiarize the timing of beeps so you don't burn off too much energy in the easy rounds.

I got 8-9 usually. Take it easy on the first rounds, and just ignore the pain! (someone at my school got 18!)

Yeah.. I do the 20 metre shuttle thingo that you just said. We call it "beep test"

Try going for long runs on Sunday mornings. I do it every Sunday morning at 6 - 7:30am... and I usually finish in about half an hour. I run about 4-6km around a river here.

wait, is this the test where you run 20 meters, like an amount of laps in a minute, and after a minute, a level increases while you need to run a few more laps, but still on the minute?

best I ever did at school was level 6. One guy in my class got 14!

Too much smoke going into my lungs from an early age I guess....

Rules

The test involves running continuously between two points that are 20 m apart. These runs are synchronized with a pre-recorded audio tape or CD, which plays beeps at set intervals. As the test proceeds, the interval between each successive beep reduces, forcing the athlete to increase velocity over the course of the test, until it is impossible to keep in sync with the recording.

I've only ever done it once (around 3-4 years ago) but I got up to 11 :D All this talk me want to do it again :P

As cepheus said, familiarise yourself with the amount of time you have to move for each stage and make sure to go as slow as possible. That'll save a long of energy in the tank for the later stages. People tend to think that it's a speed test (which may be it's intention), but I think it's more a test of endurance - which is why those who go too quickly tend not to last very long.

oh. so then it is right :P
10 is (well, was) my average.
I was in cross country, and in swim team so I was always fit for the beep test.
well 9.5 can be hard when young, but once you are past the teenage level, it's not that hard.
If you frequently run at least a mile at least 2 times a week, and can get under 7 minutes, then it won't be that hard.
And when you do your beep runs, NEVER STOP. It's momentum that drives you. Even if you are in the other side before the beep, don't stop. run a small half-ellipse until the next beep.
You'll only grow tired if you do a run -> pause -> run -> pause.

what psycoblaster said is true, don't stop. at the start, walk if you have to but just continue walking. try and get it to the point where you reach the other side a little before the beep actually goes off, when you get to the other side start running back. its takes more energy to run, stop ,run ,stop, run than actually continually running. my highest was 13.6 a few years ago. now i doubt i would make 7.

I've done it yesterday, got 10 minutes 30 :)
THough I think I can get more on the next try, I'm up to 12.

oh btw
when you "feel" tired, you actually aren't.
Just run, and keep running and push yourself.
Don't quit unless your heart is about to explode. Because most of the time, once you quit when you "feel" tired, few seconds later, you feel like you can run another 3 minutes. So just run until you feel like dieing.
Just because your throat gets dry or you seem to slow down, that doesn't actually mean you are done for it.

yeah push through the painbarrier.

i remember when i had a cold my nose was running like crap when i was doing the beep test lol. and i didn't have a hankerchief or tissues!

everyone has a threshold.

some people know how to push themselves further rather than giving up. it's something that is tough to learn though.

it's like holding your breath for as long as you can underwater. your survival instincts tell you to go up for air but it's the strength of your own will keeping yourself down.
when you start feeling uncomfortable you focus hard and count the time away, pushing yourself to the limit.
But you gotta know when the danger point really hits you, you gotta stop. after all you don't want to go unconscious and die.

Keep up the paste with someone that will probably reach that level. And if you feel a pain in the left part of the stomach area, walk sligthly bend, that kinda helps.

try reading some post - one lists the rules

never did this at school thankfully, sounds like too much hard work :)
