BAD NEWS FOR YOUTUBE!!!!

Comments

Advertisers are trying to flex their muscles and bully the platform into publishing "advertiser friendly content" with a boycott of their own. Unfortunate, considering what I most use Youtube for is not deemed to be "advertiser friendly content", with this channel as an example. I think Patreon is the next step for channels hit in this way. Hell, maybe we can choke out the advertisers' bluff ourselves if we can successfully fund all the channels they're pulling funds from.

So is this about advertisers trying to censor youtube, or is it about them not wanting their advertisements on certain types of videos?

What is there to say about this situation that hasn't already been said. :( It's not YouTube's fault or the content creators fault. These companies are acting very irrational. If they wanted to take off their adds because they are afraid it will show on some sort of Isis video, then by all means. But this situation isn't just about extremist videos, i would argue that a lot of the reasons why these companies are pulling is because their adds are showing up on videos who have conflicting opinions. And to me, that's not cool. They have every right to do this but if it stifles economic growth, then they are only hurting themselves. :hateit:

The only thing publisher and other sensitive fucks are going to cause is the opening of an underground/mature YouTube.
And no, not in the vein of Porntube or anything like that, but rather a video sharing site focused on freedom of speech without the stupid censorships and limitations YouTube is forcing down everyone's throats.

It's a shame they are doing this, but there's always someone willing to make the change, and then a revolution begins.

Nobody is going to leave youtube. Most of these youtubers complaining are super big and live off youtube. They are too big to leave.

It's the ones who make their living off of youtube that WILL leave. Anyone casually making videos will feel comparatively little impact from having ad revenue pulled, while those who used to survive off their channels will no longer be able to, meaning they'd need to find employment elsewhere, meaning drastically fewer videos, if any at all.

Many youtubers make most money out of patreons, merchandise or in-video advertisement through direct deals between them and companies (not through adsense). I suppose that will stand.
Anyway, if there were no ad money at all, maintaining the servers may turn into a costly problem for google.

People talk about moving to another service but the way I see it if it can be done to YouTube it'll happen again even if it's on Dailymotion, vid.me or any other alternative. Prospects aren't looking good for those intending to live off of the monetization of their videos. From the YouTubers I've talked to people seem to be looking into accepting bitcoin or YouTube tip jar donations. A lot of people have been wary of patreon ever since the hack. Especially since they require your SS number to accept donations in the USA.

Any youtubers relying on ad revenue weren't thinking too far ahead. A lot of bigger youtubers plug ads into the videos or do some sponsored content. That's a perk of having a large audience. Ad revenue is bonus.
Patreon is also an option but not as common.

All that is really going on is advertisers throwing a tantrum because sometimes ads get turned on for 'bad' videos.

Shit just needs to calm down and everybody will realize they're being retarded.

The root cause seems to be certain journalists publicising reports of such. Some are even using photoshopped screenshots to fake controversy. I'm not so certain it's the advertisers intending to censor as much as how afraid they are of the backlash of being associated with any sort of controversy in this day and age, with this fact being abused by said certain journalists.

I noticed that a small-time YouTuber I watch was also affected just like pretty much everyone else (minus some special ones) but in his case, even though some videos were demonetised he still has plenty monetised. Also, I'm subscribed to Censored Gaming and saw that video before being posted here, something that was saddening was that he had to let the other YouTubers go who'd make videos for the channel.

YouTube might've worked before to live off it but not anymore.

news sites realize advertisers don't care about advertising them any more as nobody can be arsed with the BS they publish as "news", so they get butthurt and look at where all their moniez are being redirected to and decide to wage war on youtube, nitpicking extreme examples (or allegedly faking screenshots) to try drive advertises back to themselves instead........so advertises seen this as an opportunity to try demand cheaper rates off google and throw tantrum pulling ads until they get their own way

I honestly don't see any winners in this scenario,
brands advertising with google get much less representation,
new sites get exposed for their blatant mud slinging tactics and still don't get any advertises back anyway,
google have to pander to advertises and offer a less useful service,
viewers get less entertaining content as anything with the word boob in it is deemed too offensive

I guess the only possible winner would be someone looking to buy some ads now while costs will probably be a bit lower

Patreon, Paypal.me and the likes are ways viewers can donate/help out the YouTubers they like watching but some if not a lot, are still children and teens so they don't have access to having a bank account. Worst case scenario a kid would still their parent's debit/credit card and use it like it has happened before with freemium games, thankfully those parents got their money back.

But, those parents seriously need to lock it down and cut off any chance of their kids using a card to make any payments or leave the device open with passwords stored on it.

Meh. IMO, most Youtubers should just switch to Patreon. Very few Youtubers I know don't use it, and given that I once saw a Youtubers revenue who has a 1000 subs (not linking channel obviously due to that they may not officially disclose revenue, but the revenue was about 2$ a month), Patreon seems to be the better option to generate revenue, since Youtube ad revenue is shit.

On the other hand, with Patreon I can choose to support a content creator I like with HOW much I want to support them, rather than some unknown amount I'm not aware of. Say for example that that aforementioned YT channel used Patreon, and around 200 of their subs gave 2$ a month (not unlikely since its one of those few channels where it seems that all subs watch the video instead of a percentage). Then that YT channel would already make 400$ a month, instead of those 2$.

tl;dr Patreon is good, YT ad money is bad.

But you know, "real jobs" in the real world are much like what Jerry described in the latest Rick and Morty episode. Not exactly anything to boast about.
I still wonder why people dare to call Youtube content creators' work "not a job".

@sarkwalvein Is probably they don't believe getting paid to make videos they want is a job. Creating content is their job, they are making videos to entertain people, to be honest, is the same kind of people who don't think twitch streaming for donations and subscribers is a job. It looks like they just playing a game.

The fact people watch them and feel entertained and want to support so they can keep entertaining them is their own desire. They don't want them to leave so supporting with payment is a option. While some don't consider that a job, (Including the streamer themself) Is a hobby, and paying for them to get upgrades and keep things working and flowing longer without any serious trouble that forces them to stop is how they can continue to entertain.

Not sure how else to explain this, just think of it as if you want to see people you like entertain you, then support them. Is a form of a job just not as common cause it doesn't contribute to society like a office or desk job or job fixing stuff. Entertainment is always considered one of these kinds of things.
