YT now requires age verification to watch, wait for it, an AVGN season!

What the hell this ain't right and it saddens me because it shows YT is getting worse and the only way for James Rolfe to get around that is by censoring his videos. :(

I love watching these old seasons in the background as they're entertaining, but Google/YT is ruining with censorship. Totally unnecessary!

While I agree with you, I also understand why that video specifically is age rated for adults.

If you know AVGN, you know there's so much swearing sometimes.

They want to prevent being sued for that or something. "Parents" nowadays try to sue for stupid things, and just because they let YouTube the parenting work instead of doing it temselves.

You're forgetting advertisers, remember the adpocalypses caused by 'controversial' content.

Google is trying more and more to make YouTube and adverts in general more profitable, hence things like pushing premium and things like manifest v3 trying to kill off adblockers.

There may also be other factors outside of Google's (direct) control, IIRC there was some US law which means that certain restrictions are meant to be in place to 'think of the children' when it comes to 'mature' content, so that could be playing a part in this.

At the very least, you still can unlock the videos by just inserting your credit card information. If you ever purchased something on Android, Google already has your card, you just re-insert it.
Haha, who wouldn't want to send their credit card details to them (no-one), Google does not have the right to spy on anyone. Its very easy to bypass this restriction like I linked above.

Haha, yeah. 😆

I thought age verification was only for violent/gory videos, but that's not the case here.

As I said, that's only for the people that already use their card services like Android Pay or have ever purchased something on Google Play. If you haven't given them their card already, don't. Use the bypasses instead.

nah its not because of parents its because of advertisers.

Hadn't seen that verification for this specific video. That's just unfair for James Rolfe.
i mean, i'm sure the man is set up for life, that's why you dont see him making videos every week.

I remember seeing an AVGN video for the first time when I was like, 10, and I was so scandalized by his intro theme, let alone the rest of the content. But I also really loved watching his stuff as a kid. I hate YouTube's weird fascination with making everything perfectly marketably rigid to however they feel that week, but at the same time, I'm not surprised that they'd age-gate his stuff. It's definitely not kid-friendly

I watched his videos when I was 10. Was quite fun to watch until his content was pretty tame.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
