lol im like this was such a bust
I used to go to my local trash dump and pick up old computers to refurbish and sell. People throw them away for the smallest problems.

i asked the NJ public works and they dont let people take from the recyclung center
im like ugh

Well, here they no longer have a dedicated electronic recycling container. Everything is dumped in one spot and sorted by their employees. Makes me sad

There are recycling locations (also charities which will take old business machines, dban them and sell them/give them to those in need of such things, as well as businesses doing the same), business complexes can be worth a look if you can get in (when companies move or upgrade they occasionally stick all the old stuff in the bin room/trash room said complexes almost always have, though there are likely to be a dozen other nerds monitoring such places), universities similar (though again security and other nerds with better access), expensive apartments as people are moving out, less expensive mass accommodation can also be useful but people usually eek things out a bit longer and have people that can nurse things along.

I tend to also find it is proportional to how much space you have available to you -- assuming you are in New York it is not a cheap place to find land so it tends to be better sorted than places where you can just stuff the thing in one of your 20 sheds.

For some perspective though.
Number of computers I have ever found on the curb or in skips. About 5 in over 20 years, only two of which were any good. A few more screens, printers and such. Speaking of screens the capacitor plague has just about passed now which is unfortunate as that was a cheap source of pretty good screens when it was active.
That number increased slightly when I knew people in various places like said business complexed.

Number of computers I have been given/offered as I am the computer guy for small businesses and such like. About 50 this year so far, most of them complete junk (not really suitable for retro needs or for legacy things like running old CNC machines) but that is not a problem really.

You can try to be a bit more proactive and talk to companies to see if you can clear out their junk rooms, and you can ask at yard sales (don't just look actually ask as most people don't think anybody would want them).

A national bank? Good luck with that. If they don't already have a disposal procedure in place then their paranoia about customer data leaking out will seal the deal for you. It might mean you get a machine stripped of a hard drive though which is still workable enough.
