Allrighty, here's the scoop:
I'm thinking about upgrading to an 8-core Mac Pro. I've been contemplating selling my G5 in order to get a Mac Pro, but can't quite decide what it should go for. I've upgraded a lot of the components, so here's all the specs on it:

CPU: Dual Processor 2.3GHz G5 with 1.5GHz Front Side Bus
Display: Acer 17" AL1715B LCD Monitor
Keyboard: Apple Wired Keyboard (the new, flat one)
Mouse: Apple Wired Mighty Mouse (new)
OS: Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.2
Memory: 3.5GB DDR
Hard Drive: 1TB (1000GB) HD Space (2x 500GB drives)
VRAM: 256MB ATI Radeon X800XT (Card has been modified as the original ATI fan had died, so I replaced it with a better, quieter fan which makes the card operate 10x better, and 10x quieter)
Optical: Brand new Pioneer DVR-115D
Other: External Bluetooth module

It's a pretty powerful Mac, even to today's standards. What do you guys think something like this would go for?

And please, for those like BoneMonkey who feel the need to flame or give pathetic responses, press the back button

I need some intelligent responses from some intelligent people.

Regards,

How was I under the impression that you did all you work on a 10 year old P3 system?

~_~ Funny.

The system's only 2 years old. Mind you, when I got it, it only had a 250GB drive, 128MB Radeon 9600, 512MB ram, and a Pioneer DVR-109, and it cost me $4,000. Had all those upgraded over the past couple years to keep it current, and so far it's done a real good job, but I need an Intel system for my main system now, mainly for my videography projects, as Final Cut runs better on the Mac Pros right now.

It wasn't a joke. I could have sworn you had said that somewhere in the Rominator thread.

Ah, I think I know where you got that. Some people were complaining that Rominator was slow for them, and I said well of course it'll run slow on a 10 year old Pentium 3

I, however, have used Macs all my life, so no 10 year old P3 for me

Probably like $1500-$1800 on ebay, maybe more.

I think ZeWarrior is about right. Even though you have a lot of add-ons, I don't think anyone would pay much more when they could just buy themselves a new MacPro.

Well, the cheapest Mac Pro is $2,899, and my machine doesn't trail *too far* behind. Think I can get away with $2,200 to $2,400? The setup I'm aiming for on my Mac Pro will cost me $3,999, so I'd have a little bit extra to pay

A similar PC would only be about 1100 new... I don't see you getting 2200 for it, especially since it won't be long before Apple drops support for PPC processors

We weren't talking about PC's now were we

The way the Mac's work is a little better than PC's, a PC with those specs would crawl compared to the G5. Considering that a refurbished 2.5GHz unit with bare minimum ram, drive, graphics, etc sells for over $2,000, I don't see why the Dual 2.3 G5 that can out-perform the 2.5 can't sell for the same amount, if not more.

It's not meant really to be a 'home user machine', it's a business machine designed for business uses.

  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
  • DinohScene @ DinohScene:
    run h2testw on it
    +1
  • DinohScene @ DinohScene:
when SD cards/microSD write speeds drop below a meg a sec, they're usually on the verge of dying

Samsung SD format can sometimes fix them too
  • Purple_Heart @ Purple_Heart:
yes looks like an faulty sd
  • Purple_Heart @ Purple_Heart:
@Psionic Roshambo i may try that with my dead sd cards
    +1
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    It's always worth a shot
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
