Hacking [Update] R4i Gold 3DS [and DSTWO] firmware update to support 6.1.0-X RELEASED

Looks like I have a bad R4i gold from r4ids.cn for the second time, I'm sick of these guys. My card isn't two months old...

Been a long time lurker here. Please forgive what is probably a stupid question. I have an old R4iDS 3DS Gold rev 7. Do the recent updates work for these older cards? The official site doesn't seem to give much indication.

Thanks to Rydian for confirming what I suspected: Namely that the one I bought a while ago is useless for 3DS use. I've emailed the makers on numerous occasions to ask about the "sometime soon' promise of a firmware update for early revisions. I've given up waiting. They don't even bother to say that the new updates are incompatible anymore. :-(

Guess I won't be buying any of their products again. Fingers crossed that the Gateway cracks 6.2

Hello i got a R4i Gold 3ds for a friend, and i though that his 3DS was not updated. Unfortunately somehow the kid got it connected to the internet and it's updated to 6.2.0-12E. So the cart went in just as i received it from one of the vendors listed on www.r4ids.cn and now the console wont recognize it. I also tried to insert it on a old NDS, so i could perhaps patch it, but wont recognize it aswell. Have i got a bricked card now? Can i recover it somehow?

just get DSTWO. since the 3ds got released and now, the dstwo still working no problems.

Pokemon Y (and X I assume) FORCES a system update to v6.1.0-11 - so a lot of us are buggered. I bought an r4ids.cn R4i Gold 3DS RTS card back in March/April - in the hope that it would be future proof. But no luck ("Card Check Fail" error) - it's rev c with no white dot and what looks like a resoldered chip (the smaller black one just above the C1 - R9 line). I contacted N3dscart.com and they said these cards had a chip replaced in August 2013 - the older ones are not compatible with 3DS v6.0 and above. Only option is to get a new card. Great, I might as well have bought a DSTWO - I'll end up spending the same amount on multiple R4i Gold cards.

I guess this is the danger with this kind of "underground" hardware - I have 3 cards now (original DS R4 card, R4-Gold.com yellow with black label 3ds card, and the rev c R4i gold card) none of which work on the 3DS - but at least they work on my old DS Lite.

I've ordered a new R4i Gold card from digimartz.com - which says it's compatible with 3DS v7.0. But I think this will be my last card - In the end I only like a few games - and I'm quite happy to buy legit copies of those. I can always use an emulator for trialing other games - or playing with cheats.

For those who are looking for information with this specific issue, hope it helps.
I have a 3DS (4.3), along with a R4i 3DS Gold (Rev A) card (running Wood 1.56 and I never checked the firmware version - sorry!). Metroid icon.

Updated my Wood to 1.64 (per r4ids.cn website) - no problems. Rebooted 3DS. R4i 3DS Gold card had a new icon ("Konami" -

). R4i 3DS Gold card worked without issue.

Downloaded and ran the patch to 6.2.0-12 (per r4ids.cn website) - no problems. Rebooted 3DS, could open the card's menu without issue.
Thanks to some obscene digging on this forum, I found that REVISION A cards (Was ONLY at the REV A cards!) do NOT need a cut.
Popped my daughter's Pokemon X game into the 3DS (Thanks Santa!), powered it on, updated from the card (Does NOT have Wireless turned on!). Rebooted.

3DS now updated to 6.1
Popped the Pokemon card out. Popped R4i 3DS Gold card back in, could still see the Konami icon. Tested, can run the card and the homebrew currently loaded.

Thank you to all on this forum who've posted helpful information, and I hope this can help out others who are in this same specific set of circumstances. Again, I have a REV A card, NOT a REV C card - I've read it several times - update Wood, confirm functionality, then patch to 6.2, and should be good to 7.1 without updating the card (as per this blogpost, and from the r4ids.cn website)

I have a "bad" rev C cart without the dot, and after trying everything to update the damn thing, i finally gave up. It's stuck on the Metroid update. So I bought another one in march of 2014 from www.realhotstuff.com and all is golden. I just share the old cart between my DSi and DS Lite, and the new cart never leaves my 2DS. Both carts are running a "hacked" 1.62 wood kernel. Now I'm able to run 1.62 wood on the older cart, so I'm happy. Without the hacked 1.62 wood, I was stuck on 1.57 rood, and it refused to boot anything higher.
