***Disclaimer: this is my Ultimate setup, not the Ultime one, in general terms.

Hello all!

After I have been testing and testing and testing many different combinations and devices, I have got to the Final WiiU Configuration.
It is not the cheapest, but at least, the most comfortable and usable.

Hi eipok!

Since you're using an SD instead of an HDD on the back port, is there a special way to set up the SD? Do you have to trick it into thinking it's an HDD?

Usually it is slower.
But let me ask. why would you like to use SD?
Is it for vWii?
You can also boot Wii/GC (etc...) games from SD in the front SD slot. no need to put it on the back!

That's my intent, but my largest SD is 200gb, and I may want to have more. Is loading time faster with the front SD slot than an SD through a back USB port?

In addition, for whatever reason any HDD I use doesn't initialize properly. Any HDD. I've tried five different ones, properly formatted. I have to unplug and replug it in vWii for it to not crash the system when opening up a loader. I'm hoping an SD wouldn't have this problem.

I have never used an SD on the back USB port.
You can run everything you want from the front SD on vWii. No need for external devices at all.

Don't expect the same loading times....

Meaning it's slower? Is it tons slower or just a little bit?

Hello Toxic9 and Regnad,

The loading times are, according to my impression, the same as the loading times that I had when I was using an HDD.

If you read the OP, you can see that the main frontal SD slot is only used for GC games, and the reason is that to make the Nintendon't able to use the Wii U Gamepad, the Nintendont has to be installed as a channel, and when it is installed as a channel, the GC games can not be in the same back USB slot as the Wii ones, so they (GC games) should only be in the only place that the Ninendon't installed as a channel in the Wii U menu can read -> in the Front SD Slot; and just to confirm, the loading times are great.

Hope it helps!

Hi, I've got a little problem and I hope there's someone around here who can help.

My setup is roughly as follows (strongly inspired by eipok's setup):
SD-card: all important files for WiiU and Wii (32GB FAT32 formatted)
Upper USB slot: cardreader with 128GB uSD-card, formatted by the WiiU, some games installed
Lower USB slot: 120GB SSD-drive (low power), WBFS formatted, hidden by ustealth, some Wii games installed

The funny thing is that everything WiiU is working perfectly well. When I remove the cardreader, everything Wii is also working perfectly well. But when the (WiiU disc) cardreader is connected, the Wii still recognizes the WBFS disc and displays the games installed on it, but it refuses to load a game. When I click on it, I get the start screen but when I click on the start button, the vWii resets and displays the home screen. It looks like it is trying to read the actual game from the upper USB slot, where the WiiU disc (cardreader) is located.

Btw. I'm using USBLoader GX and I copied Eipok's full setup for this loader.

Does anyone know a trick to force USBLoader GX to always use the lower USB slot?

Thanks a lot! It works perfectly now. I have now completed my setup and it's amazing. I can play whatever I want on TV or on the WiiU Gamepad! I have done a similar process on my 3DS, so I've got everything covered.

By the way, what are the recommended options when 2 people are playing? In the NES emulator, for example, I've seen it has many options: wiimote, wiimote+nunchuk, gamepad, pro controller... But what got my attention was the GC controller. I have the official GC adapter and a GC controller, can I use it for player 2? NES emulator (FCEUGX) couldn't detect it when it was connected. It would be awesome, since it's the closest "classic controller" I have.

Thanks again! I'm enjoying retro games again, especially some high-quality Super Mario World hacks.

Have you check the USB Loader GX Configuration? This is the stuff I have:

------------------------------
USB Loader GX Configuration
------------------------------
  • Loader's IOS 58
  • Game's IOS 251
  • GameCube Mode Nintendont
  • Nintendont Video Scale (Tamaño): 100
  • Nintendont Video Offset (Posición): 0
  • Memory Card Emulation: Individual.
  • Memory Card Blocks Size: 123.

Thanks a lot! It works perfectly now. I have now completed my setup and it's amazing. I can play whatever I want on TV or on the WiiU Gamepad! I have done a similar process on my 3DS, so I've got everything covered.

So glad you got it working!

For the GX Emulators I actually use the WiiU Pro Gamepad, and it works perfectly! You can try and configure it for player 2, it maybe will work!

Thanks for your answer! This would work for some multiplayer games where players take turns to play, but not for the ones where players play simultaneously. I'm currently trying to find some "support" for an ocassional player 2. This is what I can do with the controllers I own:

  • NES: Player 1 uses Gamepad, player 2 uses Wiimote (NES games only use 2 buttons)
  • SNES: Player 1 uses Gamepad, player 2 has no good options (Wiimote + nunchuk could be used, but doesn't feel like a good controller)
  • N64: Player 1 uses Gamepad, player 2 has no good options (Wiimote + nunchuk could be used, but doesn't feel like a good controller)
  • GC: Player 1 uses GC Controller, Player 2 uses GC controller or Gamepad
  • Wii: Player 1 uses Wiimote (+nunchuk), no option for Player 2 (I've only got 1 wiimote, that's my problem, of course. Might get one soon from a friend).
  • Wii U: Player 1 uses WiiU Gamepad, Player 2 uses Wiimote (+nunchuk)
As you can see, thanks to your post I have completed an almost perfect setup! I have everything covered for single player games. I can assure you I'm enjoying it a lot! As for player 2 support, this raises some minor questions you might be able to answer:
  1. As you said, configuring the Gamepad for player 2 could work as a temporary solution for some games (actually, a lot of them). However, I haven't found a way to do it yet. In the SNES emulator, for example, I get the option to change the button mapings for the Gamepad, but I can't figure out how to configure it to be player 2 as well as player 1.
  2. As far as I know, GC controllers are not compatible with vWii mode, so it's not possible to use a GC controller with NES, SNES and N64 emulators since they run under vWii mode. Am I right? Because being able to use a GC controller would be awesome!
  3. Is there any way to use the Wii U Gamepad with Wii Games? I guess there's not, I'm asking just in case.
If the answers to these questions are not very "encouraging", I guess I should get a Wii Classic Controller or a Wii U Pro Controller. I'm thinking which one is the best: the first is way cheaper and looks comfortable to play with, but I would have to pay attention to the Wiimote's batteries, something that would not happen with the Wii U Pro Controller as it is easier to charge via USB. What do you think?

Thanks a lot in advance! You've already helped me a lot with your post

_______

EDIT: got a Wii Classic Controller for 5 bucks. Works perfecly, but it syncs as player 1, not as player 2. In other words: in a Mario vs. Luigi game, both the wiimote (with classic controller) and the WiiU Gamepad control Mario, Luigi does nothing.

Hello MiniPutin,

First of all, sorry for the delay in answering you. Here are your questions and my answers in bold letters preceded by Eipok:

Eipok: In my case, I use 2 Wii U Pro Controllers to do this. Both have to be in the correct order: player 1 and player 2, before launching th SNES emulator. Inside the emulator you can't assign the order to the controllers.

2. As far as I know, GC controllers are not compatible with vWii mode, so it's not possible to use a GC controller with NES, SNES and N64 emulators since they run under vWii mode. Am I right? Because being able to use a GC controller would be awesome!
Eipok: I don't really know whether you can use GC controllers in this. In my case I am really happy with the Wii U Pro Controllers, so I didn't investigate further in this topic.

3. Is there any way to use the Wii U Gamepad with Wii Games? I guess there's not, I'm asking just in case.
Eipok: No, there isn't. For Wii games you can only use the Wii desingned controllers as the Wiimotes and Wii Classic Controllers.

So glad that you did it according to your wishes!

Best regards!

very nice job. I use this USB keys and work fine (1 for Wii et 1 for WiiU). So too little.

could you advise me about big size USB keys compatible please.

THX

I use this 400gb SD, and it works like a charm! https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B074RNRM2B/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s02?ie=UTF8&th=1

Hope it helps,

Hi all!

I have added to the SD and Channels Creator kit the new 4.4.4 version of the SNES9X GX realeased by dborth in October'19 (https://github.com/dborth/snes9xgx/releases).

You can find the updated links in the very first page of this post.

Hope you find it useful.

Best regards

Eipok

PS: I tested it and it works well, being able to play SNES games with the WiiU Gamepad.

You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60
