The best video game trailers of all time?

a58L0qHZ6x.jpg

Video game trailers are surely one of the most - if not the most - important things to get right when launching a new video game. They say first impressions are everything; so if you don't knock it out of the park with the trailer for your latest game - what are you even doing?

We've come a long way from the cheesy video game trailers of the past and now video game trailers can be great showcases for the games they're advertising, from tongue-in-cheek, playful ones that seem to understand their target audience, to the epic blockbuster-style trailers that would give most Hollywood movies a run for their money.

A good trailer can build hype regardless of the final games quality and perhaps even set expectations that the final game could struggle to reach, but at the end of the day, all gamers appreciate a great trailer.

When I think of truly great video game trailers, there are two specific ones that I am always reminded of and that I personally consider two of the greatest.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Nintendo Switch Presentation 2017 Trailer

During Nintendo's long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2017 reveal event viewers were treated to the ever-great "one more thing" before the event drew to a close and Nintendo dropped the first proper story trailer for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

With its swelling orchestral score and perfectly paced, climactic editing that gave us our best look at the game yet, the trailer wowed audiences and reached a 27M view count on YouTube with over 434K likes and was no doubt responsible for a swathe of Switch pre-orders.

Sonic Mania Pre-Order Trailer

The hype leading up to Sonic Mania's release was truly unique as SEGA was riding high on the goodwill created by handing over development of a proper successor to the original 2D Sonic games to a handful of devoted and talented fans - people that audiences knew could be trusted to do things right.

The Sonic Mania pre-order trailer is particularly special with its beautiful hand drawn animation and music that manages to tug just right at the heartstrings. With an excellent build-up of gameplay timed to the beat of the music and some nostalgic nods - this trailer truly did everything right and further proved that the team behind it knew exactly what they were doing.

Wow this is a tough one...which one made me get drawn in so badly lol....uhh yikes....I didn't start watching trailers of games until I started to notice them on TV then came youtube for that but that's years later xD.

There were two I believe that just stood out to me because one was the song, the gameplay n visuals got me in too quick, and the other..once I hear the song I just know it's gonna be great ♡♡
, and , the bonus is... now if youll excuse me. - you made remember too much good time, and great franchise..that died cause of the company being dumb as a sack of broken snail shells, and one that I just don't even think they will launch another one on the switch at all....gonna go cry now haaaa.....imdeadinside...ahhh I still remember another one but I don't wanna spam people in here...

I don't believe that this de-make is actually playable, but still, the trailer absolutely blew my mind away! ^_^ One of my all time favorite trailer moments

I was just a kid when Super Mario Land was a big deal on the Gameboy, and I was hooked... So when I saw this TV commercial for the sequel, it got me hella excited for it. It's the first video game I ever saved up for and bought with my own allowance money from doing chores around the house. It was $30 USD new at the time. It never felt so GOOD to treat myself to this game, especially after seeing all the coverage for it showing up in videogame magazines too.

Oh god i remeber when Wario was Nintendo's spoke person in the 90's due to the fact it was a easy way to hook people in

I prefered some of the Sega commercials for the genesis as sega wanted to make the console to look like a SNES killer

It's just too bad it's "done in the style of..." Rather than playable on an actual PS1 console.
It's a shame that Sony does not believe in backwards compatibility. With the announcement of every new one of their consoles, they're pretty much asking every dedicated playStation gamer out there to ditch their entire games library. Hopefully some dedicated fans will make bloodborne demake actually playable on a PS1... It just looks and feels too darn cool, almost as if this game was meant for PS1 all along.

Dead Island had one of the best by far:

Not sure if anybody else was aware, but there was a Dead Island 2 showcase held today that streamed a couple of hours ago:

The one time Insomniac did something...different.

And that one time my curiosity about Sonic reached maximum overdrive.
