Steam now supports the Switch Pro controller

IMG_7778.PNG

Valve's PC platform, Steam, has now added support for the Nintendo Switch Pro controller. In the latest Steam client beta update, you can use your controller by turning on the option for it in the settings. You can then customize the button layout for specific games, save presets, and use the gyro function for certain games that support it.

Greetings from the Steam Controller team. We’re pleased to announce that the latest Steam Client Beta adds support for the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. We think it is a great device with a feature set that pairs nicely with your Steam catalog. The d-pad is ideal for fighting games and platformers and the gyro enhances aim in your action/FPS titles. If you’d like to test it out you will need to opt into the Steam Client Beta then follow the steps below. We hope you enjoy and, as always, we welcome your feedback.

Rumble works.
However, I'm getting an issue where my controls hang and the only fix seems to be to restart steam.

Not much of a PC 'Master Race" When you use game console controllers to play your pc games.... The PC master race should not have to use console controllers if they are so much better then consoles.....
Don't tell me you take that joke seriously? And who cares really, having more controller options is always a nice thing.

Mayflash Magic NS dongle is amazing! I used my Wii U Pro Controller without having to worry about setting up drivers and it's just fantastic. Feelsgoodman.

I have a steam controller but can't get used to it's capacitive d-pad/analog stick. I've also not been a fan of manual mapping because it's too tedious and doesn't always work for me. Glad this gives me a second option on my PC without having to invest in a new controller.

I tried it out earlier today. I just plugged in my pro controller via USB, and it just worked. I switch A/B and X/Y in settings since games typicality use the Xbox controller layout. Had to do that to play Super Meat Boy comfortably. Since I was using it wired, I don't need to re-sync it with my Switch which is nice.
Ehh...I'm kinda the opposite when using an xbox controller. It's just muscle memory of where xyab is on a Nintendo controller that messes with me and so I ended up hitting a instead of b and b instead of a and similar for the x & y buttons. It just throws me off

Can anyone confirm if this works with a wired connection? The Pro Controller has always worked with bluetooth, but for wired, I've had to use a custom program and drivers that still have a few issues.

Steam doesn't recognize it at all through USB. Windows can see it connected, but can't do anything with it. ProConXInput works fine, and other controllers are recognized by Steam. Don't have a Bluetooth dongle so I can't try pairing through that.
Anyone able to use USB with Windows 7?

YESSSSSS! I've been using my Switch Pro controller as a "Generic Controller" through Steam for ages, so glad it now has official support! I love this controller, and now I love it even more! Gyro support's gonna be hella nice! Also, I can finally map the screenshot button to actually taking screenshots on Steam!

Just tried things out with my Switch Pro controller and can confirm that there's full rumble support in all games! Very, very happy about this :D
Nice. Wired or wireless? The alpha driver I tried that didn't work at all was wired only.

I love the battery life of my pro controller and haven't cares about analog triggers in most games so this is a big plus in my books.
I left my pro controller in my room for about 2 months still on. I came back to it after those 2 months and was still able to play with it for several days. Fantastic battery.

Yes it does. It's just plug and play.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.
