apparently the guy was in a commercial for bridge-stone tires where researchers are playing mario kart. I can see why since the man is now synonymous with PS3 but do you think Sony is going too far with this?

I believe the likely possibility is Butler was still under a contract or at least some kind of legal agreement, else I doubt Sony would do it just because he played Mario Kart.
