I read this whole thread and can't really understand much. Can I ask two small questions?

1) Do I install haxchi and then use this to launch to get syspatched?
2) Do I need/recommended to get Rednand for this?
1) You don't have to install haxchi but it is recommended.
2) You don't need to get Rednand for this.

  1. It doesn't matter if you have Haxchi installed or not, just launch the Homebrew Launcher with your favorite entry point and open the .elf file and you're good to go ^_^
  2. RedNAND is not recommended for this. This signature check patcher just patches the SysNAND signature checks, not RedNAND.

@dimok
Excuse me but... How doable is to make this CFW thing into a hybrid between redNAND and sign patched sysNAND? Like booting a decired NAND by holding a botton or/and via a config file.

Regarding the name I saw you all posted many names already. Thanks for that! I didn't go through all posts yet, just some tags I got. I will have to do this later as I didn't have the time for it today. Though I saw SIOUX in some of the posts as in the indian tribe name. I like it, it's not bad. I will have to look up what it stand for as I didnt find it at first sight (system or simple iosuhax?. Though its not system fw.img only and can also be redNAND.) I was expecting something with the word RAM to be more often as it was the first thing named on IRC by some people. Someone on IRC even suggested Ramenhax haha... Though before I deciding on the name I will have to go through the other name suggestions too first. Maybe there is something better in there ;).
SIOUX used to also be the mascot of UND (a North Dakota college) they had to change their mascot from the Fighting Sioux to the Fighting Hawks because of legal issues with the Sioux name. They had to rip up the whole college because of the copyright, making a lot of people in that college mad. People still swear that they will forever call them the Fighting Sioux even though of the big arguement.

Maybe I'm asking too much, but this signature patcher could also block system updates (or the URLs of the updates).

Just chiming in to say thank you. I didn't want to go through and set up a fw.img and deal with everything else quite yet and this works perfectly for my current needs.

@dimok or anyone else:
Can you please help me with these two questions?

Will the wupserver automatically get started after executing the new iosuhax.elf? Or how can I start the server?

And where do i get the wupclient from? After compiling dimoks code from iosuhax repository there is only the wupserver, but no client.

Edit: Ok, solved it. I finally found the wupclient, it was inside in the wupserver folder. X-(

it would block the updates only when you patch the firmware, so on a fresh console boot you will need another way to block the update or it will initiate the download before you launch the patcher.
And that's only if there will be new updates.

I know, but it could allow game updates and block system updates. The DNS we all use block both kind of updates and that's annoying.

Yes. Short version: Browser exploit -> Homebrew Channel -> This (preferably this version: http://www14.zippyshare.com/v/c8zdQFgw/file.html) -> Haxchi -> This (again) -> WUP Installer UF MOD (or Y Mod) -> Homebrew Channel Launcher (at least that's how I would recommend it).

You're not that late... the cool things are happening right now, that's why there's not really a proper tutorial. If you need help, just shoot but I'm a bit too lazy/busy to write one.

Ah okay, I don't have Haxchi, would fw.img do?

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
