According to a tweet of Serebii, a interview of IGN with Ohmori and Iwao confirm that Pokemon USUM will be the last mainline Pokemon games for the 3DS. R.I.P Pokémon 3DS

I expected Sun and Moon to be the last games, so would have been very surprised if we got any additional games after Ultra Sun and Moon.

The Switch will have had some time to build up a owner base by the time a main Pokemon game is released on it. Even if this didn't happen next year I wouldn't mind as i don't personally think we need a new Pokemon game every year, you can have too much of a good thing.

Bah, more exciting and less predictable is that it's confirmed that Mewtwo and other unspecified past-gen legendaries will be catchable in USUM through Ultra Wormholes, ramping up the excitement in RNGing. The IGN article mentioned that the dev team for these games, of only 80 people, are half the size of the SM team, indicating that those other people are probably working on the Switch game.

As to the news, about time. Despite all their claims, the Switch is totally a 3DS replacement, only makes sense for these being the last 3DS Pokemon games.

I think that was fairly obvious for anyone even mildly familiar with Nintendo. But now that 3DS is on its way out with no pure-handheld successor, it's fair to say that Switch will consolidate Ninty's handheld and console markets (as we all expected) and future Pokemon installments will go there instead. I'm really curious to see how they'll make use of the Switch's increased capabilities. I'm hoping for something more than just "HD Pokemon." Meanwhile, Game Freak themselves said to not let our expectations run too wild...
