Took me 5 minutes to find this.

"For games, the estimated effect of illegal online transactions on sales is positive – implying that illegal consumption leads to increased legal consumption."

Interesting. I can think of a few scenarios that might be at play here. I assume that the increase is just a slight statistically relevant bump. It could be that more copies of MP heavy games sell after people pirate and enjoy the SP campaign. I.e. the demo effect. Or it could be a general statistical trend where piracy increases the amount of gaming occurring and that pirates either induce sales in others or eventually cave in and start buying games when they are gainfully employed adults.

It could simply be that piracy exposes people to games they normally wouldn't look twice at. I wouldn't buy a game without knowing if I like it. Piracy allows that, and if I find the game is worth the price I'd buy it.

I'm not the only person who got burned by taking a gamble on something I thought was good. I'm looking at you, SimCity 2013.

Most consoles you can find in Japan are now 3.0.0 or 3.0.1 at least since 2 weeks ago.

Just purchased another Splatoon 2 bundle and its 3.0.0.

We just dont have a ROP and for Backups we not have ARM, so yeah. Even if the stuff is out, mostly useless the next couple of months.

Ordered one in German Amazon, lets see.

The reason why GS update their stock in case of potential hack cos they get cents from selling new consoles, most of their profit comes
from selling used games and recycled consoles

Some good points here. I downloaded Fallout 4 and played it for a few hours. Waited until the price was under $20 and bought a copy. Of course, I don't even touch it any more. But I'm also glad I didn't buy Sims 4 after trying it out. Nowadays, I don't pirate software anymore (see previous posts about viruses).

They aren't updating it manually. It's just some stupid rumor because each console would be 3.0.2 and not 3.0.1 if they did. They just get newly made once that is all.

How so? Lol
Looks alive and well to me
The exploit was patched before most people even knew about it, and now consoles are coming with the patched firmware from the factory. Not to mention all the people who updated for online play and eshop, with no possibility of downgrade in the foreseeable future.

I can confirm Game stop is NOT selling the latest firmware, I just purchased my spare Nintendo Switch and it came with version 3.0.0 installed.

I live in Atlanta Georgia if that helps

Much like you, however I tend to further conversations instead of insulting and belittling others. You should try it sometime.

But to get back on topic...

Someone in the firmware by serial thread got a 3.0.1 through Amazon Canada on Sept 26th.
hooooo nooooo!! I got firmware 2.3.0 from amazon. Now i have a huge dilemma if i should update or not. I was hoping it would be on 3.0.1 firmware as you said.

There's an inherent problem with studies in which respondents are asked to comment on illegal or socially unacceptable behavior. This problem is called Social Acceptability Bias. Respondents don't want to admit to xxxxx because its illegal or against social norms so they answer in a positive way. Its kind of like in the old day of tv set boxes to record Nielsen ratings. People with the boxes wanted the researches to think they were intelligent so they watched PBS and news programming instead of the shows they'd normally watch.

This study was also done in the EU and I'd be curious to see how the survey results would differ in NA. Are the views on piracy different between the two "cultures"? How about in east Asia where piracy is rampant?

Out of curiosity, what did you mean by Besides that study everyone on the PC platform already knows this is true.? I was thinking the reason I don't pirate PC games...or Android games. Viruses. After reformatting my PC a few years ago, I bought the handful of games I actually played on the PC. Same with Android.
The problem with social acceptability bias is that it assumes social values are also divergent when primary social control is no longer a factor, which in most cases does not seem to be so easily proved. It is almost impossible to prove a bias towards norms that is false and so social acceptability bias should really be seen as theorising and not factual.

I'm not sure I agree of course and I don't doubt that people will portray an image to conform with social norms however fundamentalists will always see piracy as a positive consumerist tool and not a negative. Marxism ofc would tell us all to wake the fuck up and stop playing video games all together because pirated or not all we're doing is enabling the evils of capitalism but fuck Marx I want my hax lol.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
