How do I check if the southbridge is broken? And what to do next?

Good day everyone!

You may remember my previous (and very first) post on GBAtemp, in which I described how my newly purchased (used) PS4 Pro broke after 15 minutes of playing while switching to Rest Mode. In that post and with help of another forum, I found out that there are some burnt-out SMD components (four resistors and one capacitor) on the motherboard and decided to start repairing them.

As I don't have enough knowledge nor qualifications, I went to a good guy who does minor repairs to re-solder the faulty components. He didn't happen to have any spare parts, but he helped me measure faulty components on his PS4 Pro and even checked mine (no luck) with a functioning power supply. Also he advised me to give the console to an acquaintance of his who knows a lot about repairs. Since I knew the guy a little, I took his advice and gave the console to that handyman.

But the more I talked to this handyman, the more I became convinced that I couldn't trust him. He said that the southbridge chip, CXD90046GG, is broken, and I will have to wait some time before he can buy it somewhere (no one in our city sells this chip). And there is no guarantee that everything will work afterwards. As I didn't trust the guy, I decided to apologize and say I wanted to take the console back as I didn't want to wait and was going to take it to a specialist service. And, with the hope that he hadn't messed up anything there, I did take my console back under the stories that all services are cheating.

When I came to pick up the console, he decided to show that the southbridge was broken by sticking the probes of a multimeter on these points in continuity mode:

He said, that because these points (and a few others he didn't show) are connected through the chip, there is a short circuit inside the chip.

So here's my first question: is it correct way to determine if this chip is broken, or could the short between these points be from a faulty capacitor somewhere on the line, for example? How can I double-check this?

If I could have known for sure that the chip was broken, I would probably have decided to order the necessary tools and the chip itself and try to replace it myself, as a start on my journey into the repair world. Speaking of which, do you think a soldering gun, BGA balls and regular flux would be enough to replace it myself, if I'll be very careful?

There is also the possibility that nothing will change after replacing the chip, or that the chip was never broken. But what to do in this case? As I said, the console broke after entering Rest Mode and the only thing that works is the Eject button, which makes three beeps. I'm also 98% sure that the power button and power supply are fine. What else can I check? Since I know that the previously mentioned four resistors and one capacitor are faulty, I should definitely replace them. But I don't have any spare parts. So this question is probably naive, but what do you think, can I remove them somehow, if I'm sure I'll never use the LAN port?

Check that line from ethernet what u have circled in red, first from 12v input u will have small brown smd capacitor,if it is short then it is cxd90046gg...but if those resistors have short across u will have to put new chipset😔

try to reflow southbridge, but preheat board first, add flux and gently give him a nudge from corner...maybe balls align in proper way...

@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though

    I appreciate the insight!

@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)

yes looks like an faulty sd

@Psionic Roshambo i may try that with my dead sd cards

@The Real Jdbye, I considered that, but i'll have to wait until i can get the eu version in the mail lol
