New Super Mario Bros DS (NSMB DS) Guide

Hello there, Tempers! Here is my full review/guide for New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo DS.
Before we move on, I strongly suggest that you get your hands on a flashcart of any kind to save a backup of your game and play custom levels you made on and actual DS system. I recommend going for a DSTWO or an Acekard 2i.

In-game Tricks & Tips
One-hit Invincibility
When holding a Koopa shell in your hand while running into an enemy, you will become invincible to the first one you run into when you are holding the shell. The amount of enemies you can hit is determined by the amount of Koopa shells you can get. The only downside to this is that after a couple of seconds, the Koopa will come out of the shell. This is very useful in situations where you need to make a quick kill.

Boo's Following
Keep in mind that Boos (or the ghosts that spawn in certain levels) can only follow you when your character's back is turned AWAY from them. When your character is facing them, the Boo will go into hiding and stay motionless.
Mega Mario
When you beat a level with the last two digits on the time is the same (e.g. 266 sec.), you might get a toad house with either regular or mega mushrooms. If you get a mega mushroom, try to find a level with the most amount of breakable blocks. The more you break the blocks, the more 1-UP mushrooms you receive; the max is 5.
1-UP Trick
Ah, the classic 1-UP trick; the oldest trick in Mario history in games ranging from SMB1 on the NES and SMB2 on the Super Nintendo as well. Basically, you take a normal koopa shell and stand next to a staircase leading to the flagpole. You then have to wait for the Koopa to come out. Jump on the Koopa once and then the game will automatically jump for you. After a few seconds, you will recieve unlimited 1-ups until you step away from the Koopa shell.
Cheats and Glitches
"Under the Flagpole" Glitch
In a few levels, there is a glitch that lets you travel in front of the flagpole without having to jump on it and finish the course. For this you must have the Secret Challenge Mode option enabled and perform a wall glitch if the level has an are underneath the ground.
Secret Challenge Mode
When you have completed the whole game, you can enable the secret challenge mode option. To enable this, you have to go to the pause menu and enter the following cheat code:

L + R + L + R + X + X + Y + Y.

This allows you to play your levels normally, but your character can only move RIGHT and you can't move to the left. This is also the gateway to the wall glitch: you must find a space in between your character and the outside and make it as small as possible. If you jump through it, your character will travel through walls.

Luigi Cheat

When you are on the menu screen to select your world, highlight the profile that you are going to play on by using your D-PAD. Then, held down L and R and press A once. You will hear Luigi say his name and you can play on your profile with Luigi.

Making Custom Levels
There is also a way to make your own custom levels for New Super Mario Bros. This requires a flashcartridge or any kind of Nintendo DS emulator.
First, download the NSMB Level editor onto your computer. Then you must extract the file. You will then receive five files that have readme's and some text documents. There will be one application that says NSMBe5. Run the application and it will start up. Before the application runs, it asks you to open a New Super Mario Bros. DS ROM file. I won't tell you specifically where to get these because of GBATemp's rules and restrictions, but you can Google it. Once you have opened the ROM, it will take you to a screen with all the levels in the game, toad houses and unused levels that were never implemented in the game. You can either hex edit or edit the level regularly.

From here, you can mess around with the different sprites, tiles and object. You can change each one to make it your own custom level. After you do this, you can save the level and test it out in an emulator on your computer.

You then can take the edited ROM onto your flashcart by taking the ROM and dragging it to the file you have created in your cartridge like you are loading a normal ds game. Sharing of game ROMS is ILLEGAL, but if you want to share your custom levels, the editor has an option where you can import other people's levels and export your own.
Thats all, thanks for reading:)
