I bought this Wiistar converter:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/385069752864

It is nearly worthless. The Wii does not detect it as a component cable and therefore, 480p is not able to be selected.

Not even forcing 480p with USB Loader GX makes it work. It just gives me a no signal. I bought a similar converter for PS2 and got the same result. Only 480i ,and maybe 576i.

Note:

It specifically states that it supports 480p as well.

There exist for Wii the Wii2HDMI converter which recognizes the used display format and converts it to a upscaled progressive hdmi signal :
  • Converter input: 480i, 480p, 576i
  • Converter output: 720p (HD ready), 1080p (Full HD) as upscaled HD display format.

There looks to be a switch on the end by the hdmi port? Have you tried changing that? Maybe it changes the pin configuration so it will detect as component.

Its this kind if adapter. It theoretically should be recognized as component, It uses the AV out port of the Wii. I only know others use them on there Wii.

A other solution would be a component2HDMI converter

I have one of those on my wii, is not the greatest thing on world but does the work

The image is clear an the 480p resolution is a plus.

The only disadvantage is what you can not route the sound through a hdmi switch.

Wii2HDMI adapters are terrible, don't use them at all. Use either component cables or invest in a WiiDual HDMI mod kit.

The only switch on it is a 720p/1080p switcher.

Speaking of the pins, it has more than the official Nintendo composite cables do. But whatever the case my Wii will not allow me to switch to 480p and forcing games in 480p with homebrew causes it to give me a no signal message.

Wii2HDMI are either hit or miss.

Sister bought herself one and it has diagonal lines across the screen at all times.
I bought myself one and it doesn't has that problem giving me a clearer picture.
But essentially they're the same.

If you're going to invest more money on a very old consile, do it right, in the long run you'll spend less with an expensive solution than trying out different cheap "solutions".

Of course Component cables are your best bet.
If you really want to use your console with an HDMI TV/Monitor, be sure to use an old one, with a 1080p resolution at most. Your Wii will look better in low-res displays than expanding a 480p res to 4k.

For 4K displays, a Framemeister is your best choice.

Do you have component cables that you could hook up to enable 480p and then switch to this one to see if it carries over?

I use my wii with a wii2hdmi on a 2022 4k Samsung tv and everything is fine. Think what is abot the Samsung's internal 1080 to 4k upscaling what is top of industry

Unfortunately not.

All of this could have been avoided if Nintendo would have added an HDMI port on the Wii. They seem to enjoy always being behind the other consoles in terms of performance and features like not having DVD-Video.

I see on this here https://electron-shepherd.com/wii2hdmi/ that 240p is not supported. Good thing that that the GX emulators support 480p. I also wonder how much input-lag this has. Hopefully minimal.

If you want more flexibility and the ability to use a converter with more than one console consider grabbing a retrotink 2x pro and combine it with proper component cables for your consoles, like the HDRetrovision cables.

More expensive than a cheap converter but it will give you a much cleaner image and effectively work with any retro console you could buy, and all you'd have to do is get a component, s-video, or composite cable for them.
