Misc Is it safe to update so I can add a Friend to my Friends List?

I just wanted to know if its safe to update my 3ds to the latest version so I can add my friends "new" old 3ds XL he bought after he broke his 3ds, and it wont let me add him unless I update, if there is a workaround that isn't extremely hard or has costly requirements, I would be down for it, but if not I would like to know if its safe to update to the newest system update.

I'm on 11.6 with homebrew and cfw. I haven't added anyone but as long as you keep your options private, you should be fine.
