How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .
Step 5 - Install a d2x Custom IOS to enable New Wii Games. Install DiosMios to Play Gamecube Games.
(Spoilers Window) Add 'n Play Wii/Gamecube Games + Update USB Loader GX (req for Gamecube games)
Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

Happens when playing USA games with a European Wii. Open selected VC game - 'Settings' - 'Loader Settings'in 'Video Patch 'select Force NTFC. Press Save. Now it should work. :)

Use cheats (Ocarnia) in Wiiware/VC games
Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

The benefit of emuNAND
WAD installation happens on Computer therefore there is NONE TO LESS risk of Brick your Wii. If you wish to play Wiiware/VC games emuNAND is your solution. period.

I used something within DMLizard and it took a long time. I had an ISO of the Wind Waker and it turned it into a sys folder and a "game.iso".

It has this in the top-right corner:
Rev1230 IOS249 (Rev 65535) + AHB
(d2x V9beta (r47) base56)

Try to get an iso and use this method instead for gamecube games.

B. To Play Gamecube Games - Create a folder 'games' inside the FAT32 HDD. Download and Open DMToolbox v.0.3 (Windows XP version) (Works with Windows 7). Click 'black folder' in Gamecube ISO: and select your GameCube ISO file . Click 'yellow folder' in Output dir: and choose any folder (i.e. Desktop) . Finally Press Install . After installation is complete, in Desktop move the GAMEID folder to USB:\games\ .

Also, on the left-side it should stand DIOSMIOS Lite v.2.11 - does so for me .

Edit: Didn't notice your last post. I definitely haven't used DMToolbox before so I'll try a couple of things later on tonight or tomorrow.

Thanks again )

Hello, I'm having trouble with the softmod. Whenever I attempt to run a GameCube game, the DIOS MIOS logo doesn't appear and I get nothing but a black screen. I've let the USB Loader run for several minutes at a time in case if it's just the app running slow. Unfortunately, that is not the case. I've checked the credits screen and the items listed are DIOS MIOS v2.11, Rev1230 IOS249 (Rev 21008) + AHB, and (d2x v8final base56). When I first did this tut, the area of the credits screen that displayed (d2x v8final base56) was blank. I think it was because I wasn't able to follow the additional in Step 5 ("Important: At 3:30 in Video (WiiMod) make sure in 'Wii Mod' to install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad..."). I followed the instructions in the video and I didn't have that file. I continued with the tutorial and received the black screen, so I used ModMii Classic to download a (I'm guessing) similar file called cIOS249[56]-d2x-v8-final, but when I try to install it, the system just hangs. I don't recall anywhere in the tutorial that lists where I can get IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad and my Google search hasn't yielded any worthwhile results. I'm assuming this is my problem, so any leads to getting this wad would be very helpful. I don't think the hard drive is the problem, but I'm using a Toshiba 500GB USB 3.0 drive (I'll supply a serial if needed).

Any help would be appreciated,
~Robot 1X

Answer: Its in Step 5 the video tutorial's link . ht.tps://www.y.outube.com/watch?v=qEy_Dkhi9WA .
You need Ace's files (which has the d2x file) - they are @ http://uploaded.net/file/u7fv52ry that can be found in the video description.

In Aces file (DMLizard.zip ) go to folder /copy-to-sd/wad/ and you will see IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad .

I recommend that you Do Step5 again.
Use WiiMod from DMLizard.zip // (its in copy-to-sd/apps/wiimod/ . Just copy wiimod folder to SD:/apps/
Copy IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad to SD:/wads/
Copy DIOSMIOS v2.11 and RVL-BC-v6 to SD:/wads/
Open wiimod in Homebrew Channel
Install IOS249[56]-d2x9b47.wad .
Change IOS to 249 .
Install DIOS MIOSv2.11 and RVL-BC-v6 again .
.
Open USB Loader GX and see if Credit screen shows "(d2x v9beta (r47) base56)"
Good Luck!

I also see in credits screen my Wii differs from yours,

i've Rev1230 IOS249 (Rev 65535) + AHB
you've Rev1230 IOS249 (Rev 21008) + AHB

TBH, i dont really know what Rev65535 refers to or means.

Hi, I'm new to this whole scene, I recently purchased a used Wii from e-bay, it seems to already be soft modded to some extent it has Priiloader, USBloader GX, The Homebrew Channel already on it, the seller didn't make this clear in the description. The system itself works fine so I'm not complaining, but the aforementioned applications I think are missing some files because they dont seem to work as described above. The Homebrew Channel opens to bubbles unless I hit the home button then I'm given limited options. GX Loader just goes to a black screen. I would like to get these programs running properly.
I'm wondering what would be the best course of action, should I just update currently installed applications or should I just start from step 1 and work my way down. I'm currently running Version 4.3u, IOS58v v24.3 according to The Homebrew Channel, or according to Priiloader v0.4 I'm running IOS v80 systemmenu v513.

Can I just put a new files over the existing ones on the wii if I'm unsure about them? Thanks in advance for any assistance. Cheers.

Hello. Thanks for your guide.
Can I get a little help please. I think something is seriously messed up for me.

I want to play burnt dvd games, but the neogamma wont load them. I get some error which I've forgotten but it had a number and something about 'id'.

I've followed this guide up to step 4 but step 5 seems very complicated so I gave it a rest. From some other guides it seems I should already be able to play dvd but I still can't.

Please help. Thank you.

Some Wii games 'newer' require a d2x file installed on the Wii .
I, or rather Ace explains how to get and install this d2x file in step 5 .

if you dont have a Gamecube compatible Wii, or dont wanna play ISO-based gamecube games. dont install diosmios, just the d2x file .

Thanks for the quick response.

I tried DMLizard and it stopped working after the part where you have to drag the ISO in.
I'm not sure what I'm doing now.

I wanted to just make the Wii able to play any region games. I only want to play Fatal Frame 4, not use any kind of USB thing.
Is this possible? Is there something I can just install to make this happen?
Sorry for being so dumb, I'm really new to this. Feel like I've really messed it up.

ok nevermind, it was the dvd+r. I tried dvd-r and it works.
The wii doesnt sound too happy about it at times though. Pretty loud loading sounds. I plan to get the original game soon so less stress on the laser.

Thanks for your help.

edit: There is one more thing actually. Does the SD card always need to be in the Wii?

No, it did not come with an SD card.

I take you first! :)
Seth , you need an SD-card! Get one that is 2GB SD and not SDHC .
---

Now, in your shoes, I would buy an SD-card that is 2GB. And a SD-card reader.
Then I would...
Im alittle unsure what to do now. .. OK.

I will make a SD-card download for you specially. It will easiest.

You'll get:
SD:/apps/
- usbloader_gx
....
Do This:
1. Use an SD-card reader /w SD-card on your Computer
2. Put Folders 'Apps' to your SD:/ from my SD-files.rar
3. Done with Computer!

1. Remove SD-card from Computer
2. Put SD-card into your Wii SD-slot (front side)
3. Start Wii and wait until Wii Menu show
6. Open Homebrew Channel
7. Start USB Loader GX from HomeBrew Channel
8. In USB Loader GX - click on Settings - then Credits .

Credits displays what you System has currently like...
- a d2x to play Newer Wii games . Then it shows it in RIGHT CORNER like this -> ( http://i.ytimg.com/vi/eGOjS4wVWr4/maxresdefault.jpg )
- DIOSMIOS to play Gamecube games on SD-card or USB-devices. Then it shows it in LEFT CORNER like this ( http://www.homebrew-connection.org/...2/12/Usb_Loader_GX_Rev.1204_Credit_Window.jpg )
Credits also shows if what version you have . --

Please tell me what your Credits shows in RIGHT n LEFT corner.
!We will continue when you tell me this :) !

More detail about SD-cards n Wii's
On the Wii there's installed updates (custom ISO's) and shortcuts to run programs like USB Loader GX, NeoGamma, snes9, but these windows
on Wii Menu ( http://blog.apyka.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/chaine-neogamma-R8-final-sur-wii-1.jpg ) are just shortcuts. The actual
programs like Neogamma, ect are stored on your SD-card in SD:/apps/ .

Here is a preview how my SD-card looks . I will go in detail what each folder means.
jIHAccY.png

apps - all Applications that is available in Homebrew and Wii Menu (like Neogamma, Usb LoaderGX, Snes9x, multimod manager to install custom ISO's, ect)
( picture of my Apps folder )
bootmii - has three files . armboot.bin, bootmii.ini, ppcboot.elf) . This is NOT needed for You. Its just a extra safety thing.
fceugx - has three folders. cheats, roms, saves. Its a folder where all games for my NES emulator is. The actual Emulator is in SD:/apps/fceugx/
games - has one folder G8ME01. Its a Gamecube game. For playing gamecube games on SD card. You can also play from USB-devices.
genplus - has one folder. roms. Its a folder where my Sega Megadrives games are. The actual Emulator is in SD:/apps/genplus-gx/
....
I hope you start to understand the hierarchy on the SD-card . Wii handles shortcuts n updates. Applications is in SD:/apps/ . The rest is on the SD:/ .

Good luck! :)

ok nevermind, it was the dvd+r.

Yes and No.

Yes if you wanna open Apps (custom-stuff) like USB Loader GX, Emulators, ect
No if you wanna play normal Wii games use Youtube, use Shop Channel ect.

You can still however play normal Wii games with SD-card in the Wii .

Thank you.

Hi. Sorry i was busy with another guy.

I would first of all IGNORE neogamma. and instead use USB Loader GX
As I see, you have completed step 4 ? yes?

This steps can be considered many but it's essential stuff todo that all guide tells u to do.

Step 1 you install Homebrew Channel (a-most-for softmoddin')
Step 2 you backup your Wii . Its a safety reason
Step 3 you install Priiloader (priiloader is what you should be looking for. Its where you enable REGION-FREE Everything. Meaning you can play japanese games like Fatal Frame 4, n such) .

Did you have any problem with step 3?

Step 3 was all good. Followed all instructions for priiloader and can now play Fatal Frame without issue. Though it sounds like it's processing really hard to load because I'm using a burnt dvd but I'm getting the original game disc soon so that wont be a problem soon.

I guess the USB loader will be good in the event that the Wii disc drive breaks down. I dont have a spare hard drive for the USB loader though so I was thinking of doing the last step later.

Thanks so much for all the help.

"Please tell me what your Credits shows in RIGHT n LEFT corner.
!We will continue when you tell me this :) !"

Thank you so much for your detailed and helpful response!!

I have taken the files you provided and put them in the root folder of my 2gb SD card as instructed.

When I go to Homebrew channel it's just an empty screen with a bubbles and a "The Homebew Channel" logo in the bottom corner, when I press the "home" button I am given options...

"Back", "About", "Launch Bootmii", "Exit to System Menu", and "Shutdown" in the top right corner of this screen it displays "1.1.0 IOS58 v24.32 on the left my "wii IP" is displayed ("Launch Bootmii" takes me to a black screen).

Thank you again for all your assistance. I'm new to working with the wii, but I'm decent with stuff like this so I should be able to handle whatever it is I need to do. :)

An empty screen? It should'nt be empty. There should be a App there Called USB Loader GX in Homebrew Channel.
I can check the Wii when i get home, how it is . in school atm.

EDIT: .. FORMAT the SD card and add this files instead, then put SD into Wii . And Open Homebrew Channel . There should be be some applications here. click 'USB LOADER GX' . ...

This is how Homebrew Channel should look.

UW! :)

When you wanna play retro-games or wiiware , just continue with the steps.
but don't skip any. they are all in order for a reason .

How is the files on SD:\ cataloged ?

usbloader should be :
SD:\apps\usbloader_gx\

...
i tried myself the first file i ziped SD-files.rar and I get the usb loader gx in homebrew channel .

A friend here gave this tip,
Press '1' in Homebrew Channel and look if INTERNAL SD SLOT is BLACK-marked in 'Device:'

Stephanie: Okay, so placed the files into my newly formatted SD-card (fat32) I put them into the root directory of my SD so: SD:\apps\usbloader_gx\ as you suggested and this is what I got when I entered The Homebrew Channel:

When I go into USBloader_gx to look at the credits I get a screen saying that I need to hook up a usb device. I have a External HDD for this purpose that I can partition and format to FAT32 if that's what I need to do.

Would it hurt anything to just go and do step 1 thru 5 and make sure everything is installed to my liking, or could that do some damage? Thanks again! :)

Well, The things is, your wii is already modded.

We are just checking to see how it is modded,
som ignore that message and press settings then credits :)

Settings is that grey wheel in left down corner ,
usbloadergxscreenshotma.png

Like.. you ahouldnt do the ateps as you already a softmodded wii.
You have done step 1 -homebrew channel
You Could do step 2 - backup wii . ( i send u a file with bootmii )
You Could do step 3 - priiloader ( but u have it probably already installed so.. just ignore Thr install part, E , F , n after u have priiloader on sd card , try to press power+hold retry button)
You have done step 4 - we will see this when u press credits in usb loader gx
You have probably done step 5 - we will see this too when u press n say what credits show
You could do step 6 - emunand is the cute part of Wii softmod, all classic retro games waiting for u :)

so.. pleas say what settings - credits show .

Seth

thee is another way too, u could use syscheck

http://wiibrew.org/wiki/SysCheck
SysCheck looks what stuff u have installed on your wii and creates a report on root of your SD:/

like this.. @ http://gbatemp.net/threads/hacking-wii-again-after-some-years.371692/
in skaendos comment .

Guide: goto wiibrew..syscheck press download , unzip to sd card and then open app from homebre channel .

like credits ... we only gonna check what is installed on your Wii .

PS: its best if we do all now in one swoop...when u see this comment, please, respond wait 10min , i will be online and we do this as a chat... it will be alot eiaser.

After the 'check' that we been trying to do. I will see what u missing and give a whole tutorial how to enable playing wii games, gamecube games n wiiware. so about 5 min after that check you be able to play whatever game system u want . , :)

Sorry I just saw this! If you're online now or anytime soon you could send me a private message. Your Wii system menu is awesome, I'm envious! My wii system menu doesn't have a settings button like yours does. it's basically a standard or "virgin" system menu in all appearances aside from "the Homebrew Channel", and "USBLoader_gx". I'm going to run a syscheck and get back to you. If I can't get up with you in the short term just let me know when would be good to chat and I'll make myself available.

You really are tremendously helpful, and I am very grateful... also you look like Keira Knightley. ;)
