How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games

(Disclaimer: Stop in your tracks and visit
https://gbatemp.net/threads/modify-any-wii-4-3-below.171901/
It is a MUCH more updated tutorial for Soft-Modding your Wii. )

(If you new to Softmod a Wii this will give you a 100% safe guide from start-to-finish to play Wii Games, Gamecube Games and Wiiware/Virtual Console games from an USB-drive. Im not kidding. In this guide we only use official files to minimize any risks apart from Step 4 . But I can assure I used this guide to softmod my sister's Wii. She can now play Skyward Sword by USB-drive without problem! :) )

Requirements:
*SD Card (no SDHC)
*SD Card reader
*Wii updated to 4.3 (4.3 is latest version, just update your Wii and you be fine)
*Internet Connected Wii
*USB-hdd to store Wii games and Gamecube games
*To play Gamecube games you need this Wii Console and Gamecube Controller
(No Gamecube Memory Card is required if you use NMM)

A short description what each step does
Step 1 - You install Homebrew Channel to install Apps.
Step 2 - Safety Precaution. Backup Wii System (NAND) to your PC.
Step 3 - Safety Precaution. Install Priiloader to prevent disc updates to damage your Wii.
Step 4 - Patch IOS and Install WADs using Two Easy Apps. Install USB Loader GX to Play Wii Games .

Step 6 - emulate Wii System (NAND) on USB-hdd making Add WiiWare/VC Games near impossible to damage your Wii .

1. Install Homebrew Channel

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video :

2. Backup Wii NAND (to restore your Wii if anything goes wrong)

Important! Make sure SD-card has more then 700mb free space
Important! Make sure your Wii has more then 700 blocks open. To Check: Turn on your Wii. Goto Wii Options - Data Management - Save Data - Wii. In 'Blocks Open:' there should stand 700 or higher. Then Return to Wii Menu. Press Back 4 times.
Follow S Winegars instructions in video :
- In BootMii use the Power button to cycle through options in the menu, and Reset to select.

1. When Wii NAND is backed-up using Project Phoenix Medias video guide. Shutdown Wii. Remove SD-card from Wii and put SD-card into Computer.
2. Open SD:\ and check that you have two following files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN'. Copy these two files into a safe location on your Computer. My tips is to save them into a usb-stick or Dropbox if your Computer crash.
3. Once you saved the two files 'NAND.BIN' and 'KEYS.BIN' you should remove them from SD-card (NAND.BIN takes 500mb)
4. Done! :)

3. Install Priiloader (regionfree games and stop updates)

1. Plug SD-card into Computer
2. Download Priiloader_v0_7.zip . Unzip and Put it into your SD Card. (SD:\)
3. Download hacks_hash.ini - Scroll down to 'Pre-compiled Hacks download' , right-click, save link as, and save into SD:/apps/Priiloader/ .
4. Remove SD-card from Computer and plug into Wii . Turn on your Wii. Launch Homebrew Channel. Then launch Priiloader.
5. Press A to Install
6. Once Priiloader is installed shut down the Wii (Sometimes you Wii freezes after Priiloader installation. Its totally normal. Just re-start your Wii with reset and after Wi Menu appears shut down the Wii)

(configure Priiloader)
1. Press the "Power" button while holding down the "Reset" button on your Wii until the Priiloader menu is displayed on your screen.
2. In Priiloader select "System Menu Hacks". These are the following 7 hacks I suggest you select: 'Region free EVERYTHING', 'Block Disc Updates', 'Remove NoCopy Save File Protection', 'Block Online Updates', 'Remove Diagnostic Disc Check', 'Move Disc Channel', 'Auto Press 'A' at health screen'. Select Save Settings when Done.
3. To Exit Priiloader select System Menu
4. Done! :)

A video how to configure Priiloader can be found here :

PS: By having Priiloader you prevent disc updates that can damage Homebrew.

4. Install USB Loader and Custom ISO

Follow HighTeckMans instructions in video - Zip-file from Youtube video Required :

Important! Skip 10:00 - 13:00 in the video. We will not use Wbfs Manager instead we use WiiBackupManager to add Wii games, explained in Part 5 - spoiler windows - Play Wii/Gamecube games from USB-hdd.

Unfortunely I can't get Ocarnia working with Wiiware/VC games in USB Loader GX. So an alternate solution is to use the App '....tbc

@ Shrinefox
Well, for starters you can really check if the Wii have d2x or not installed.
Start USB Loader GX , then goto Options, Credits. In the upper right corner it displays the d2x version - like this http://i.ytimg.com/vi/eGOjS4wVWr4/maxresdefault.jpg

There's also a great comment by the creator of USB Loader GX (Cyan) @ thread - http://gbatemp.net/threads/usb-loader-gx-installing-gcn-games.332986/

"1. cIOS doesn't change anything for DIOS MIOS.
the cIOS is only used by USB Loader GX to see the content of the drive in order to select which "game name" you want DIOS MIOS to launch. it's not USB Loader GX which is launching the game, it's DIOS MIOS.

port0 is read by all cIOS
port1 is read only by hermes cIOS and d2x v9+

When you select a game, USBLoader GX tell DIOS MIOS which game you want to play, and Exit. all cIOS are unload from memory, and the console reboots (no IOS are loaded, so cIOS doesn't matter anymore)
the Wii launch the MIOS (which is DIOS MIOS), and DIOS MIOS works with both ports.
It checks first if there's a drive in slot0, if nothing is detected after 10 seconds it tried port1.

Best solution: use port0 (the bottom port, the one nearest to the edge).

Once DIOS MIOS find a drive, it search if the game you want to play is on the drive and load it.
-> At this moment it show the splash screen.

2.
Video mode "Force console default" is not always good.
GameCube video mode need the match the region of the Game.
If you are on a PAL wii 576i, playing a NTSC game (480i/480p), and you "force console default" then it will force PAL 576i.
But the game need NTSC 480i/480p, you will have wrong colors if you set 60Hz, and the game will lag (bad refresh rate).

Best mode is "Force game default" to always match the game region.

But, DIOS MIOS (Lite) should detect the video mode automatically (if you are using the correct USB Loader GX revision, as I changed many times the way video modes are working).

DML Video mode : "DML Auto" is the best option. it's setting the Wii to the detected "Game Region".
You can use "Use game Setting", which allow you to select the video mode manually, but again if you set "Game default" is exactly the same way than using "DML auto".
Forcing the Game setting video is when you want to force PAL on a NTSC game, or NTSC on a PAL game, or PAL480, etc.
using "Force Game default" should be un-useful with DM(L), and USB Loader GX 1201 mod9+ (sorry, r1202 will be released soon).

The "DML AUTO" is checking both the game region and the Wii setting.

"AUTO" check the game region, if it's PAL it's using PAL settings.
Then it checks the Wii settings. PAL wii have 3 settings: 50Hz (576i), 60Hz (480i), progressive (480p)

If you are in PAL 50Hz in wii setting, it will set DM(L) in 50Hz! don't try to enable 60Hz in game selection menu, it will only ends in wrong colors.
You need to set your Wii setting correctly, the USB loader is not enough.

OR

you need to set "DML Video mode" to "Use game setting" and force a video mode manually.

3.
Some games don't work when compressed or altered.
You should always start testing the game with a 1:1 ISO.

Best settings in USBLoader GX:
HDD menu:
GC install compressed: OFF
GC installed Aligned: OFF

Global Loader menu:
Gamecube mode: MIOS (original and custom)
DML Video Mode : Auto
DML xxxxxxx : OFF for every other settings
DML Force 16:9 : ON (it's your own choice, but I like it ON. Just remember that some games don't like that setting and you need to disable it. I put it ON by default because all the games I'm playing are working with it. I tested them with OFF first! But instead of setting "ON" one by one in all indivifual setting, I'm setting it ON in the global.

Individual game setting:
Nothing to change!
Except if you want to set "DML Force 16:9" to OFF.

First try the game with all default settings.

If the game works, you can try to force the game to run in 480p.
DML Progressive Path: ON

If the game works in Progressive and 16:9, good for you :)

If the game freeze on a green or black screen, but the game is playing (you can push buttons, hear music, etc. just no visual), then it's a video mode problem.
What is the config of your Wii?

The "DML AUTO" is checking both the game region and the Wii setting.

if you are on a PAL Wii, set to 50Hz, then the USB loader will set DIOS MIOS (Lite) in 50Hz!
If inside the game you choose "60Hz", it will not work fine.
If the game is ONLY 60Hz (Metroid prime), it will not work either.

You need to set the Wii video setting correctly or force the correct video mode.

Looks like I certainly have dx2, then. I'm not using a PAL Wii but I went ahead and used those settings anyway, also using port 0... Still exits back to the homebrew channel whether I try to load from mios dios or gx. Pretty frustrating, but thanks for the suggestions nonetheless!

NP. :)

Edit: If you really, really wanna play that gamecube game. I suggest putting it on SD card and use DIOSMIOS lite .

Use DMLizard - Download DIOSMIOS lite - Put wad folder into SD:/ (card) . Install with WiiMod the wad files DIOSMIOSLite_v2.11 and RVL-BC-v6 .

SD card is about 2 gig or more , and you fit your gb game on there. Its just when you wanna swap between 15-20 gamecube games that it gets hard.

ALSO.
I noticed when I use DMLizard it downloads DIOSMIOS_v2.11 ... i myself use version 2.10 .

You can try to install these two files in WiiMod : DIOSMIOS_v2.10 and RVL-BC-v6.
And if you wanna try another d2x I provide the one i use myself in the other folder .
Link: http://www.filedropper.com/wiiwadforgamecube

If you wanna use the other d2x as well, please, Install everything according to instructions in my guide under STEP 5 . Play Newer Wii Games and Gamecube games.

good luck :)

I'm stuck on step 2.

I don't know if you watched the videos, but in step 1, the guy ran into the same problem as me where it says BootMii can only be installed as an IOS and so he didn't do it and only installed the Homebrew Channel. (I actually don't even know what this means so for safety didn't try it and just installed the HC like he did)

On step 2, the video doesn't follow on to this. There's no apps in the Homebrew Channel, just bubbles so I don't have the menu they have.

Hope I explained that properly.

What's the next move?

So it's okay to install these wads over eachother, even if it's a lower version?
Huh, I didn't know it worked that way... Thanks though, I'll give it a try!

Holy cow.. I knew someone would ask this ,

To get to menu in Homebrew Channel you press 'home button' on the wii controll ( the blue house button ) .
Thereafter you can pick Launch BootMii . and continue with the instructions..

And here's what you want to know. The difference of installing BootMii as IOS is that BootMii shows up when you start your Wii, otherwise you reach it from the Homebrew Channel.
Having BootMii starts up directly means you can 'more easy' restore you Wii if anything goes wrong.

Thats the only difference.
Also.. its not a problem .. its just some Wii consoles (newer) can't be installed as IOS.. but they still works perfect for softmodding n playing Wii, Wiiware and gamecube games.

Hi Steph.

Ok, I'll try installing it if you think it's safe.

How likely am I to brick the Wii if I follow your guide and at what point could it go wrong?

Hold my hand through this.

I can tell you :)

There's 6 steps.
step 1 - (as you done) - is when you only install Homebrew which never goes wrong.
step 2 - is when you backup your Wii . If you have enough space (700mb) on SD it's never goes wrong.
step 3- is when you instal priiloader . You install priiloader to stop updates from discs, ect. It usually never goes wrong.
step 4 - is when you install IOS - I've followed HighTeckMans video 2-3 times and never had anything go wrong. Do just what he does.
step 5 - is the last thing you install on Wii . A d2x IOS . And DIOSMIOS (if you wanna play gc games) .
--- This works for myself... but as you probably read some user had probs to play gamecube with diosmios 2.11 . IDK- i will try diosmios v2.11 myself tomorrow.
(spoilers window for step 5) - window shows how to format your USB device, and install WiiBackupManager to install Wii games. Also includes guide to install gamecube games. )

step 6- is when you create an emuNAND on the SD card . Its done through USB Loader GX.. and its very GOOD , as Virtual Console/Wiiware is ISO files... and installing a failed ISO can cause probs to your Wii . But with emuNAND you install the Wiiware on your Computer, not the Wii. - meaning even if the Wiiware fails.. it doesnt cause damage to your Wii.

thats all! :)

Thanks for your time and patience. I'll probably be back at some point, if something goes wrong or I'm stuck. I don't have a USB device for loading games yet, though. I'm looking for a way to use SDHC if possible.

Not if you have to pay for it :)

One more question if you're not too bored and then I'll let you go = The card I'm using so far for this tutorial is a basic 2GB SD. When I get to the point of putting games on my larger SDHC card, do I still need the 2GB card for anything? I mean, do I need apps or programs on there to boot from?

...

If you done step 1-3 .. please wait 5min or so.

OK.

As Hielkentator pointed out previous in this thread. I will point you too http://modmii.zzl.org/ .
Modmii is a guide to softmod your Wii .
Its very simple to use.

You will notice when reading, that it has similar steps as mine.. install homebrew. install priiloader. and backup wii.
Modmii also describes how to install custom IOS. as in step4 here.

To summerize: As of now step4 can't be done here. As i noticed the zipfile is missing.
So instead you can/should use modmii to perform the same action ,, installing custom ISOs ,,

If you still there..
ModMii is easy to use.

At http://modmii.zzl.org/ - You click your countrys flag to download modmii.exe
When downloading you doubleclick to start modmii installer .

After modmii is installed. You click shortcut for Modmii ModMii skin. And write "I agree" .
In modmii menu -
select "ModMii Wizard+Guide (Start here..)
then select "Yes"
then select " 4.3 "
then select "your Wiis System menu region"
then select "super smash brother brawl ( we've already installed homebrew)
then select "4.3 (recommended) "
then mark "Shop" and press next
then select "No, I want the same"
then select "Yes" (for USB-Loader)
then select "FAT32"
then select "Configure USB-loader (recommended)"
then select "SD Card"
then press "next"
and finally "Finish" ---

You will download 57 wad files in another window.. wait until all files is downloaded .
....all files in folder COPY_TO_SD needs to be copied to your SD card.

When downloadin' you will open an ModMii Wizard Guide in the webbrowser. --
-- I suggest you skip first 2 steps (Homebrew and Making NAND Backup) -- if you already done them.

Start at step 3. Install a patched IOS236 -- and just follow the guidelines.
After step 3 is done.. continue with step 4. Install Priiloader. if you hasn't already installed priiloader.
after step 4 is done continue with step 5. Install WADs .

after step 5 is done read in the ModMii Wizard guide how to use the USB-loader n such ...

Good lucK!

Thanks, I'm still here. Hope you are because I've been gone a while.

Ok. I noticed one mistake in your original post on page 1. The hacks_hash.ini needed to be saved in the apps/priiloader folder, but the guide said at the SD root.

I did steps 1-3 now and I'm half way through the ModMii guide. There's a step missing here also. After I select super smash brother brawl, it asks if I want to download an active IOS, yes or no. I figured the answer was yes and got through to complete step 5 of your guide.

There's a 4GB file limit on SD cards so although it looks like it'll hold GC games, the best Wii games are over 4GB and won't transfer. Guess I'll have to find a pen drive or something like you said. Still haven't tested any GC games yet, though.

thanks to you lateforeverthing, my guide will still be useful.
As i didnt notice HighTeckMans files was deleted.

I updated the guide with a much better video instruction for ModMii installation.
I updated the guide where to save hacks_hash.ini ( previously it was SD:/ root . )

Im happy you get through even with this .. incident.
And yes for Wii games an Pen/Usb device is sooo much better :).

The difference with ModMii and HighteckMans way to install CUstom ISO is HighTeckMans is done through Internet (NUS) while ModMii doesnt use Internet, but the WAD n ISOs are the same.

I bought a 32GB USB stick (not huge I know, but doesn't matter) and Wii games load from USB Loader GX now. No problems so far.

When I loaded a GameCube game from SD it got to the boot screen and gave the error "You need to install an additional GameCube loader". This is after installing DIOS MIOS Lite so I don't know why it won't load. Not a big problem, I've got some Wii games to play now.

Thanks for all of your help and the guide.

Did you use DMToolbox to optimize the GC-games?

One more... go into settings - credits in Usb Loader GX and write what stands in left // right upper-corner.

I used something within DMLizard and it took a long time. I had an ISO of the Wind Waker and it turned it into a sys folder and a "game.iso".

It has this in the top-right corner:
Rev1230 IOS249 (Rev 65535) + AHB
(d2x V9beta (r47) base56)

Confirmed.
I tried using different usb loaders and diosmios versions.

USB Loader GX latest version r1230 : Works
USB Loader GX r1230 with DIOSMIOS v2.11 : Works
USB Loader GX r1230 with DIOSMIOS (Lite) v2.11: Works
USB Loader GX r1230 with DIOSMIOS (Lite) v2.11 and NMM (NoMoreMemory*) : Works

* : doesn't require a gamecube memory card to save in gamecube games.

I also notice that you don't need USB/SD:games/ folder as default. In USB Loader GX - Settings - Custom Paths you can easily use another folder for loading/storing your gamecube games.

I use USB:/Wii stuff/Games/ - for my Gamecube games
as USB:/games/ - is for my PS3 games
